Cornes said it didn't get him excited and sun tan wallet s**t canned it. He said we are relying on godees having a poor year and next years draft is weak.
I thought this years draft is the weak one?

The 2020 draft isn't weak, it's extremely compromised with NGA/FS/Academy selections everwhere, about 40% of the all stars game was tied to a club, i have 4 of the top 10 as being tied to other clubs at the moment.

The top 5 though is arguably stronger than 2018, it's ******* ridiculous.

So if Melbourne finish bottom 5 and we manage to snag Will Phillips as an example, we have won the ******* lotto.

Early top 10:

1. Elijah Hollands - Vic Country
2. Riley Thilthorpe - South Australia
3. Jamarra Ugle-Hagan - Vic Country *WB NGA
4. Will Phillips - Vic Metro
5. Braeden Campbell - Sydney Academy *Sydney Academy
6. Denver Granger-Baras - Western Australia
7. Connor Downie - Vic Metro - *Hawthorn NGA
8. Nathan O'Driscoll - Western Australia
9. Luke Edwards - South Australia *Adelaide FS
10. Ollie Henry - Vic Country

Melbourne's defensive line and midfield is way too good for them to finish in the bottom 5 with an easy draw

Why does everyone lose their gourd over it being completely compromised

We won't have access to those players regardless of what we do. There's no chance no way. So just remove them from the equation. What is left. Is it good for us to have another pick in the top 10?

If it is then make the deal. If it ain't then don't
Clearly the powers that be (man making ristrettos at the front of the club???? someone from Nick Theodossi Prestige Cars????) have decided that it's a go and it's worth stacking up firsts next year. Who are we to argue

Very very happy with the pick swap.
Obviously noone we had our eye on this year as a must have, and we have put ourselves In a great position mid to late in the draft and first round next year.

A point many continue to overlook.

There’s no such thing as an easy draw now. For Melbourne to improve they need a couple of key forwards, capable of kicking bags of goal each week.
their defence is overrated. May is the Jono Hay. Fantastic on paper but geez they were sold a lemon. And if Jake Lever has to play accountable again this year. He’ll be just as bad. Losing Frost was massive hit.

The point being it might not be a top 10 pick.

Just because a player is available to the whole pool doesn't move them from being the 13th best player in the draft to the 6th.

The 8th pick next year may become the 14th, which obviously diminishes it's value alot.

What 2 x first rounder next year will give us is a shitload of ammunition to try and move into positions ahead of likely bids, even if it includes 2021 future picks.

The top 5 is extremely strong, as strong as many of the best years over the last two decades. This could be the view of the list management team, we either get into the top 5 because of Melbourne's incompetence or we have additional ammo to trade into it.

Sydney's Academy selection Campbell plays like a reincarnation of a young Nathan Buckley and I have him as the 5th best player at the moment. Ugle-Hagan is being hailed as the next Franklin and he may not even go top 3....

Is there an easy draw anymore.... teams are getting pretty even... prob only gc that were way off last year but obviously with they new players and more dips into the honey jar they have to improve... as will Mel as will Carl not too sure about syd at this stage

If us and godees finish mid table next year (which most in the football world would say is likely) then we could have picks 7&8 or close to that next year. Could potentially trade them together for top 1-3 pick and get one of the best 3 kids in the country.

As Wallet says - we always end up mid table and miss out on the elite talent in the draft. This would be a clear way to get access to it

I understand that with the academies and father sons next year will diminish our pick (not sure why people can’t get there head around that). But why do we need to move our picks up the draft order? The players are going to get bid and get to their allocated club regardless. What would be the point in trying to get ahead of those bids and compromising our picks?

We will package the two for a top 5 or 6 pick, or use on a trade target. Plenty of options, even more so if the Dees finish outside of the 8 and considering the competition is pretty close talent wise at the moment, even a big improvement from them might still only get them to the bottom end of the top 8 at best.

Fireman Kane and the maestro behind Tambling>Buddy s**t canning North? Yawn.

It's a risky trade but as it's the first risky trade North have done in just about forever, I'll cut them some slack.
It's only risky if we think Melbourne are going to play finals. I can't see that happening. But even if that pick ends up being pick 12, it's still not a bad deal.
The only unknown is the quality of both drafts.

And Finegan has hinted we want to use some of these picks in live trading.

Noone, but we just said (in trading speak) we don't think we have much chance next year and are planning for 3-6 years time, by which time our best players will be over the hill or retired. (That is my take - obviously I see things a differently to most)

What is your interpretation?

My interpretation is that we are ways away but still want to remain competitive and build winning culture.

We will also have a round 1 next year with that round 1. So two next year. As to what the numbers will be; we will see.

the value of the draft pick only diminishes if the academy kid is bid on, and the team he is linked to doesn't have a pick before us. If there are teams that have academy/FS sections and an early to mid 1st round pick, they will look at trading that pick away for back end points. So if Melbourne finishes high on the ladder we should be able to package the late first rounder with other picks to move up the order. If Melbourne finishes low on the ladder we have a top pick with F'all influence from the academy picks.

We can't lose on this.
