News 2019 Trade News Compendium

Might as well start this thread now considering some trade rumours seem to be leaking out from various places.

Remember, this thread is for news articles/possibly tweets if half-reputable and discussion posts will be deleted - feel free to chat about the articles in one of the other relevant threads around here. Note that just because I post a story here doesn't mean I don't think it's probably rubbish (Denham, Ralphy, Waldron etc.) but it's worthwhile having a place to keep these stories together.

Edit: getting carried away, not sure why I titled it 2020 initially.

Brisbane Lions ball magnet Tom Cutler draws interest from Victoria (Fox Sports, 04/09)

Carlton and Collingwood are “sniffing around” out-of-contract fringe Lion Tom Cutler, reports the Herald Sun.

As part of a comprehensive trade wrap, the Herald Sun reported the Lions would “face a fight” to hold onto Cutler, who could soon further explore his options with the Blues and Pies interested.

The Lions are keen to hold on to Cutler, who was taken with Pick 33 in the 2013 national draft.

Adelaide midfielder Hugh Greenwood has not re-signed with the club, despite his eyebrow-raising social media post on Tuesday.

Greenwood, a former gun basketballer that was initially drafted by the Crows as a Category B rookie, has been linked to Hawthorn, while Queensland clubs Gold Coast and Brisbane are reportedly also interested in him.

TOM CUTLER

Could be on the move in search of more opportunity after playing only three games with the Lions so far this season. Athletic and versatile, the Lions face a fight to keep Cutler. Carlton and Collingwood sniffing around.

LEWIS TAYLOR

Another Lion who has found it difficult to secure a permanent berth in the senior side. Out of contract at season’s end and weighing up options.

ALLEN CHRISTENSEN

Happy at the Brisbane Lions where talks have just started on a new deal.

On the trade table? The players who may look for a fresh start in October
Nick Robertson (Brisbane)
Robertson is one of a group of former senior regulars at the Lions who have fallen out of favour during the club's surge up the ladder in 2019. The hard-at-it tagger, originally from West Perth, has multiple suitors should he choose to seek more opportunity elsewhere, with Fremantle believed to be among them. Greater Western Sydney asked the question, but he won't end up there.

Callum Ah Chee (Gold Coast)
Ah Chee followed Jack Martin in requesting a trade out of the Suns after a high-grade ankle sprain ended his season in June. The No.8 pick in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft – a talented utility who's predominantly played forward at Gold Coast – might not be moving far, with Brisbane linked to him.

Jon Ceglar (Hawthorn)
The former Magpie's had a few rival clubs ask about him, but it appears he'll either stay at the Hawks or renew acquaintances with one-time Hawthorn football boss Chris Fagan at Brisbane. Ceglar's senior opportunities in brown and gold have come alongside Ben McEvoy or when the latter was out, but he's still managed double-digit appearances in each of the past two seasons. The Hawks are more confident of keeping him now than they were a few weeks ago.

Hugh Greenwood (Adelaide)
Greenwood's ideal scenario is to stay at the Crows – and ideally on longer than a two-year contract, but that's not forthcoming at this juncture. Gold Coast, in particular, and Hawthorn are understood to be the inside midfielder's most fervent suitors, while Brisbane has also been linked to the former basketballer. Greenwood has headed overseas as he weighs up his next career move.

Trades Unplugged: Essendon’s Joe Daniher has a big decision to make (Jay Clark, Jon Ralph and Sam Landsberger, Herald Sun, 10/09)

CALLUM AH CHEE

Will go to Brisbane and while he is a former No. 8 in the 2015 national draft he has battled with various issues and there is a concession it won’t be for a high pick. Suns have supported him strongly but are aware he needs a fresh start.

TOM CUTLER

Looks headed back to Victoria for next season, but it’s unclear which club is really interested. It’s not Collingwood, and Carlton have made Jack Martin and Tom Papley their priorities. Brisbane wants to keep Cutler but are waiting on his management to come back to them about his intentions for next year.

New No.1? Hawks lock in ruckman for a further three years (Marc McGowan, AFL.com.au, 10/09)

HAWTHORN has beaten Brisbane to Jonathon Ceglar's signature, re-signing the ruckman for three years in a move that hints he is primed to become the Hawks' No.1 big man.

The Lions were keen to add Ceglar to their ruck division, but he instead elected to remain at Waverley Park, where he's played 15 and 11 games respectively in the past two seasons.

2019 free agents: Who will stay, who will go, latest whispers
State of play: The Lions have locked in much of their impressive young list for next year, and well beyond that, too. Lester has been out of the senior Lions team since round 17, and has managed only nine games this season. But he's a member of the club's leadership group and is expected to get another year there, particularly if Luke Hodge retires and another place in the Brisbane back half opens up. Things are more clouded for Bastinac, who has played only five games for the Lions in two years and could be forced out depending on moves in the trade period. Out-of-contract runner Tom Cutler continues to attract attention from Victorian clubs.

AFL trade whispers 2019: Hawthorn flags interest in Sam Frost, Gold Coast prepared to offer Brandon Ellis long-term deal (Fox Sports, 11/09)

The Gold Coast Suns are pondering offering premiership Tiger a long-term deal to persuade him to move north, reports the Herald Sun.

Ellis has returned to form this season, averaging 21.7 disposals from 21 games. But he’s a restricted free agent at season’s end and is reportedly seeking more security.

Carlton had been interested in Ellis before it backflipped a fortnight ago, while Brisbane has also made enquiries.

But the Herald Sun reported on Tuesday night that Gold Coast was “entertaining a four or five-year deal” to land Ellis.

Lions offer long-term deal to wantaway Suns high-flyer (Mitch Cleary, AFL.com.au, 16/09)

BRISBANE has offered a long-term deal to Gold Coast talent Callum Ah Chee as part of the Lions' strategy to splash the cash in the upcoming Trade Period.

Ah Chee, 21, officially requested a move up the highway last week to fulfill Chris Fagan's plan to add more pace at the Gabba next season.

With Luke Hodge formally retiring following the Saturday night semi-final loss to Greater Western Sydney, the Lions will look to add to their half-back stocks this off-season.

They confirmed over the weekend they have money to spend, with greater midfield depth also a requirement.

The Lions have shown interest in Adelaide midfielder Hugh Greenwood who also has attention from the Suns, while the question was recently asked of contracted Crows half-back Brodie Smith.

Both Greenwood and Smith have a close relationship with Lions football boss David Noble, who has spent the past three seasons in Brisbane.

The need for another ready-made ruckman was shown in a push for Hawthorn big man Jon Ceglar before he recommitted at the Hawks for three seasons.

The Lions are currently armed with picks 17, 19, 32 and 42, with the latter two in the mix to used on Ah Chee once the Trade Period opens on October 7.

"We're looking for a couple (of players)," Brisbane chief executive Greg Swann told AFL Nation on Saturday.

"We won't do a lot, we won't be probably as big a player as we were last year (recruiting Lachie Neale, Marcus Adams, Lincoln McCarthy and Jarryd Lyons).

"Yeah, we have (got cap space). We just keep wanting to put good players in the system, we need probably a bit more depth, you always need midfielders.

"We'll see what's out there.

"The advantage for us at the moment is we've actually got some people that are interested in coming, so that's something that's changed massively over the last three or four years."

Allen Christensen Fears His Brisbane Career May Be Over

Right now it may be painful to contemplate but Allen Christensen hopes Brisbane use the memory of their heartbreaking AFL finals exit to spur them on to greatness in 2020.

And the off-contract forward is keeping his fingers crossed he will be along for the ride.

In a devastated Lions dressing room, Christensen, 28, looked like he was the hardest hit by the three-point semi-final loss to Greater Western Sydney that ended the Lions’ fairytale season.

“Personally I have a bit of contract stuff to work out. I love the group but I will wait and see,” Christensen said.

Trades Unplugged: Latest news, whispers on Tom Papley, Josh Jenkins, Brad Hill and more (Sam Edmund, Jon Ralph, Jay Clark, Herald Sun, 17/09)

GRANT BIRCHALL (HAW)

Alastair Clarkson is still pushing to keep the popular back flanker for one more season, but it’s not a one-way discussion. If the Hawks pass, Brisbane or Gold Coast would surely snap him up. He’d replace Luke Hodge at the Lions and the planned Shaun Burgoyne move at the Suns.

CALLUM AH CHEE (GCS)

The No. 8 draft pick will go to Brisbane on a long-term deal for a later pick, another setback for the Suns given their initial investment and hard work as he battled off-field issues.

HUGH GREENWOOD (ADEL)

Wants three years and a games-based trigger. Adelaide won’t give it, having offered two years, and to be honest, doubts he can get it elsewhere. So if Adelaide don’t relent before the trade period starts, he will explore his options with Hawthorn, St Kilda, Gold Coast and Brisbane. Would be a beautiful fit for the Hawks given his versatility.

Brisbane showing interest in key crow (SEN, 20/09)

The Brisbane Lions are reportedly showing considerable interest in Adelaide’s Brodie Smith.

According to Caroline Wilson, the Lions have the key Crow on their transfer hit list which stems from the rebounding defender's friendship with Brisbane's GM of Football David Noble.

“I'll tell you one player that’s on their list and that is Brodie Smith, he’s definitely on their list,” Wilson said on FIVEaa.

“He also had a pretty good relationship with David Noble.”

Former Crow Stephen Rowe added that the Lions had made contact with the 27-year-old’s management.

However, he would be surprised if Smith up and left the Crows considering he signed a three-year deal last year.

“We know he’s very close to Charlie Cameron,” Rowe said.

“He’s got two years still to run on his contract. He’s got leadership aspirations. I think sitting here now he’d stay. If there’s no change at that football club, there’s a chance he could go.

“There’s a lot of people like Brodie Smith and names that are being picked off like cherries on a tree by other managers and clubs because of the position the Crows are in.

“It’s critical they get it right. He leaves, you may as well close the door.

“You build clubs around quality men like B.Smith. I was shattered when I heard that and he has been enquired about.”

The 2014 All-Australian has played 167 games for the Crows having debuted in 2011.

Edmund’s trade update on Ellis, Greenwood, Crouch, Frampton, Elliott (SEN, 24/09)

Hugh Greenwood (Adelaide)

"The Suns are very confident of landing Hugh Greenwood from Adelaide as well.

"Greenwood hasn’t made a decision yet … he’s chasing that four-year deal from the Crows or at least three with a trigger, so he’s waiting to hear back from them on whether that will be accepted.

"He has met with Hawthorn, Brisbane and Gold Coast. The Suns really think if the Crows deal falls over, they’re absolutely in the box seat to get him as well."

Crows Brad Crouch, Brodie Smith, Cam Ellis-Yolmen and Hugh Greenwood could fly north (Richard Earle, The Advertiser, 24/09)

Adelaide is dealing with northern exposure as Gold Coast gets serious for Brad Crouch’s signature while Brisbane plots to snare more Crows including unsettled Brodie Smith by 2021.

Comprehensive coaching change at Adelaide smoothed the way for Smith to stay at West Lakes for now but Cam Ellis-Yolmen is the big-bodied midfielder Brisbane is targeting next season.

Rebound-ace Smith, 27, was blocked from joining confidante Charlie Cameron, David Noble and Andrew Crowell in pursuit of a flag in Brisbane next season. If the Crows landscape doesn’t improve Smith could still secure passage to the Gabba in 2021 despite contracted for another two seasons.

Ellis-Yolmen will leave Adelaide having managed 39 games in six years. Brisbane is the expected destination of Ellis-Yolmen, another close mate of Smith.

Unrestricted free agent Cam Ellis-Yolmen will be the next Crow to fly the coop, when he accepts a four-year offer from Brisbane.

AFL.com.au understands the 190cm midfielder's teammates have known for weeks about the length of his impending deal with the Lions.
