Trade Wrap: Crow set to become a Lion on long-term deal (Marc McGowan, AFL.com.au, 29/09)

ADELAIDE unrestricted free agent Cam Ellis-Yolmen will be the next Crow to fly the coop, when he accepts a four-year offer from Brisbane. AFL.com.au understands the 190cm midfielder's teammates have known for weeks about the length of his impending deal with the Lions.

Securing Ellis-Yolmen, who turns 27 in January, was one reason Brisbane pulled out of the race for another in-demand Crow, Hugh Greenwood.

Greenwood, another tall inside midfielder, is Gold Coast-bound, but the Hawks have also tabled an offer to him.

Among other players to watch are Tiger Dan Butler, Lion Nick Robertson and Kangaroo Mason Wood, who may all be at new clubs by the end of the Trade Period.

Noble did state the club is on the lookout for someone that can break the lines across half-back and said the future of former Rising Star winner Lewis Taylor won't be decided until after the Telstra AFL Trade Period is complete.

"We have said to a few (players) we need to get through the trade period to assess (where they stand)…Lewy (Taylor) is one we certainly want to talk to, “ Noble said.

"We have got to continue to strengthen our list with whatever it looks like."

Brisbane GM of Football David Noble was asked earlier today whether Birchall would be a player the Lions would be interested in recruiting.

“Anyone in the space that allows us to improve our run off half-back and through the wing, without specifically commenting on Grant, they’re the areas we’re trying to look at,” Noble told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

Brisbane small forward Lewis Taylor, who also remains without a deal at the Lions, has also received preliminary inquiries from the Swans.

The 2014 NAB AFL Rising Star played just five matches this season, overlooked for regular senior opportunities as the Lions surged into second place in the 2019 home and away season.

It is understood he is open to moving to his second AFL club.

Trade Wrap: Banned Pie sparks interest from handful of clubs (AFL.com.au, 03/10)

Brisbane midfielder Tom Cutler is poised to depart the Lions as he assesses his options in his home state of Victoria.

Cutler, 24, has resisted several opportunities to re-sign with the Lions this year during a season where he was stuck in the NEAFL.

Essendon and Carlton are monitoring Cutler's movement as they look to add more midfield depth.

Brisbane has had some success with its application to retain defender Matt Eagles as a Category B rookie for a fourth year in 2020.

The Lions will risk losing the 29-year-old by delisting him then re-drafting him as a rookie, but the AFL will allow them to again classify him as a Category B player if no other club picks him.

AFL rules typically allow players to maintain that status for a maximum of three years, but AFL.com.au reported in August the Lions felt Eagles was an exceptional case because of his circumstances.

BRISBANE has emerged as a contender in the race for Collingwood free agent Jamie Elliott as he continues to ponder his future.

Pies officials remain in the dark over Elliott's future after meeting with him on Thursday as he weighs up loyalty or a longer-term deal.

At 27, Elliott is seeking more certainty on his long-term future after signing only a one-year deal for 2019 after missing the entire 2018 season with hamstring setbacks.

t is believed Collingwood has offered a two-year deal.

Brisbane was circling Elliott ahead of the Grand Final last week and Lions have previously shown a history to attract injured players and offer greater security.

Sought-after Collingwood free agent Jamie Elliott's decision on his future could impact on a series of out-of-contract Lions.

Allen Christensen, Tom Cutler, Nick Robertson and Lewis Taylor have all played regular senior football for Brisbane in recent seasons but find themselves without deals in October.

Departing Crow Cam Ellis-Yolmen will join the Lions as a free agent, while Brisbane is in a race with Melbourne, in particular, for goalkicker Elliott, who could also remain a Pie.

Christensen's forward role could come under threat if Elliott chooses to play for Chris Fagan's team, while Cutler, Robertson and Taylor are already exploring their options.

AFL.com.au reported that Essendon and Carlton are showing some interest in Cutler, Fremantle and Adelaide look to be Robertson's best hopes, and Sydney has made preliminary enquiries about Taylor.

Matt Eagles will be delisted and re-drafted, with the AFL approving the Lions' application to retain him as a Category B rookie for a fourth year, so long as another club doesn't pick him first.

The Lions are keeping several spots open but further trade activity will make it a tight squeeze for this group and the likes of Ryan Bastinac, Josh Walker and Sam Skinner.

Saints chase Dan Butler as clubs queue for Jamie Elliott (Jake Niall and Peter Ryan, The Age, 04/10)

The options for Elliott also became clearer on Friday with Melbourne and the Brisbane Lions offering the 27-year-old three-year deals as they attempt to convince the free agent to depart the Magpies, where he has played 105 games. Collingwood's first offer had been for two years.

Both the Lions and Demons have met Elliott.

Collingwood were cautiously optimistic that Elliott - a fan favourite - would choose to continue his career at the club he has played for since 2012, having overcome injuries to rediscover his best at the end of this season.

Elliott kicked 26 goals in 16 games, but11 came in the final four games of the season as he again became an important cog in the Magpies' attack.
His management began serious negotiations with Collingwood in the latter part of the season and the Magpies have been attempting to reach terms acceptable to the creative forward.

Melbourne made their pitch to Elliott well before the season ended while the Lions' coach Chris Fagan met him recently, with the Lions using their injury-free run in 2019 as a selling point to the oft-hamstrung forward.

Although Elliott may stick with the Magpies there are a number of small forwards potentially switching clubs in the trade period with Butler, Betts and Papley joined by Port Adelaide's Sam Gray, the Lions' Lewis Taylor and Essendon's Orazio Fantasia as players likely to be on the move.

The Brisbane Lions have signed unrestricted free agent Cam Ellis-Yolmen.

The 26-year-old, 191cm midfielder arrives at the Lions after spending eight years at the Crows, where he played 39 games.

Jamie Elliott continues to weigh up his future after the star Collingwood small forward met with the Brisbane Lions on Saturday.

Elliott was given a tour of the Lions' facilities at the Gabba by coach Chris Fagan, at a time the unrestricted free agent has three-year offers on the table from Melbourne and the Lions, and a two-year offer from the Magpies.

On the eve of the AFL trade period, he has yet to determine where he wants to play next season.

Elliott attended the Magpies' best-and-fairest count on Friday night. The Pies are cautiously optimistic he will resume his 105-game career there but the Demons and Lions are offering the longer deal he wants.

As The Age reported on Saturday, the Demons launched their bid for Elliott weeks ago while Fagan met him recently. The Lions reportedly had used their injury-free run in 2019 as a selling point to the oft-hamstrung forward.

Ahead of the Lions' best-and-fairest count on Saturday night, Fagan told Channel Seven Elliott was exploring all of his options.

Who might leave: Quite a few players still in limbo with Tom Cutler attracting interest from clubs in Melbourne and Lewy Taylor from Sydney. Allen Christensen is among a number of out-of-contract players, as well as unrestricted free agents Ryan Lester and Ryan Bastinac.

It appears this trade period won’t be quite as seismic for the Lions, after last year’s dramatic deals bringing in Lachie Neale and sending out Dayne Beams. Now Brisbane is a contender and a destination club for many non-Queenslanders, which is a great sign for its future. Big-bodied Crows midfielder Cam Ellis-Yolmen has already joined as a free agent while former top ten draft pick Callum Ah Chee is also keen to join the Lions. Chris Fagan could be joined by another veteran Hawk with the Lions meeting with four-time premiership defender Grant Birchall while Brodie Smith has talked down suggestions he’ll be coming across. Perhaps the biggest surprise came on Friday when reports the Lions were a smoky to lure Collingwood forward Jamie Elliott emerged. Elliott toured Brisbane’s facilities on Saturday.

Who might leave
There aren’t too many keen to leave the Gabba right now, though Victorian Tom Cutler appears likely to seek a move back home. Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon have all been linked to the midfielder after he played just three AFL games in 2019, while Nick Robertson played in the semi-final loss to GWS and could be joining the Giants this off-season. Ryan Bastinac and Josh Walker might be squeezed out.

Sydney has interest in fringe Crow and Lion: Harley (Nic Negrepontis, SEN, 07/10)

Sydney CEO Tom Harley has confirmed the club’s interest in Brisbane forward Lewis Taylor and Adelaide midfielder Riley Knight.

Both are out of contract at their respective clubs and while the Swans are busy with other situations, including Joe Daniher, Tom Papley and Zak Jones, they will pursue the duo.

“Yeah there’s interest, we’ve had conversations with Lewis and Riley,” Harley told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“I guess with player movement now, you need to have irons in a number of fires and things can fall a certain way that you might not expect so we’ve explored that.

“Lewis is obviously a mid-20s, midfield-forward type and Knight is a high endurance midfielder who can play a number of roles.

“They’re not right at the top of business at the minute, we’ve clearly got some things on our plate, but there’s certainly some interest there.”

Brisbane hope to land Birchall

Brisbane Lions have offered Hawthorn free agent Grant Birchall a one-year deal.

They are hopeful the four-time premiership veteran will follow in the footsteps of former teammate Luke Hodge.

However, Birchall would not have no guarantee of a potential off-field role as Hodge did. Hodge signed a two-year deal, inwhich he would have coached had he not played in the second year.

Birchall will be though, in effect, an on-field coach with the Lions should he agree to join them.

Elliott not moving to Dees

Jamie Elliott has told Melbourne he won't be joining them as a free agent.

The high-flying forward has yet to say where he will play next year, as he is yet to recommit to Collingwood and toured the Brisbane Lions facilities on Saturday as he continues to weigh up an offer from them.

The Demons believed Elliott was likely to remain at Collingwood and the Magpies were confident of re-signing the popular forward on new terms. List manager Ned Guy said on Monday morning the Pies had a two-year deal on the table for Elliott.

The Demons were told Elliott had decided against a move there on Saturday.
