Pies optimistic that forward jet won't go despite Brisbane tour (Callum Twomey, AFL.com.au, 07/10)

COLLINGWOOD is growing more confident free agent Jamie Elliott will re-sign with the club as Brisbane and Melbourne circle.

Elliott toured the Lions' facility over the weekend as he weighs up his options and Collingwood's contract offer.

List manager Ned Guy said on Monday at the opening of the Telstra AFL Trade Period that the Pies were getting more optimistic that the goalkicker will remain with the club.

"We're waiting. We're very hopeful and growing a little bit more confident, but until we get the green light we have to wait and see," he said.

No offer from Lions as Hawks veteran plays the waiting game (Marc McGowan, AFL.com.au, 07/10)

Several clubs – not just Brisbane – are understood to be considering signing the unrestricted free agent, but none of them have made him a priority at this stage.

Lions football boss David Noble confirmed on Monday that they had not made a contract offer to Birchall and were not even at the stage of medically running the rule over him.

Brisbane's interest in Birchall depends on whether coach Chris Fagan and co. believe former Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge's retirement will leave an experience void.

The Lions' average age (25.2 years) and games played (102) was the lowest of the semi-finalists this year and that was with Hodge in the line-up.

However, Noble hinted that was still a solid foundation with which to build upon.

"We are deciding where we're going to go; if we need to go with another mature-age guy. That's sort of where we're at," Noble said.

"Those sorts of things are going to play out a bit later – like later in the week or early next week – so we've just got to determine the impact 'Hodgey' has probably left us and whether or not we need to continue to go down that path.

"We have a bunch of experienced guys now, with (Mitch) Robinson, (Daniel) Rich, Stef Martin and the likes, so the Birchall discussion is more whether or not we need another mature player."

AFL Trade Radio: David Noble: We have some interest in midfielders, particularly Callum Ah Chee.

AFL Trade Radio: David Noble: We targeted four players last year and got four. This year we have a couple of players in mind.

AFL Trade Radio: David Noble: We don't feel like another key forward is something we need right now.

AFL Trade Radio: David Noble: There's only one Luke Hodge. Any mature recruit isn't a replacement for him. If we went for someone like Grant Birchall it would be to help our run off half back.

AFL Trade Radio: David Noble on Lewis Taylor and Tom Cutler: We haven't had an direct dialogue with Sydney. Sydney has an interest with Lewis Taylor. I think both those guys will bring plenty of interest so we'll have to help get a deal done if they decide to leave.

Lions confirm fringe duo are seeking a fresh start elsewhere (Nic Negrepontis, SEN, 08/10)

Brisbane has given out of favour duo Tom Cutler and Lewis Taylor their blessings to explore finding a new home.

They played a combined eight games in a Lions side that not only had great success, but also had an incredible run with injuries.

Brisbane head of football David Noble says the Swans are interested in Taylor and both are looking around for prospective suitors.

“We haven’t had any direct contact with Sydney per se, we know that both Lewis and Tom are probably talking to a few clubs at the moment,” he told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“Obviously Sydney has an interest with Lewis. They’re both players we said to them we need to get through the trade period just to assess where we’re at doing.

“It certainly doesn’t mean they’re not required, but to explore their options, which is what they’re both doing, it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

“I think both of those guys will gain some interest and then it will be a matter of whether they decide to head to another club and a matter of getting a deal done for those guys.”

Cutler’s manager Nick Gieschen has confirmed his client is exploring a move to Victoria.

“Tom has had some chats with Brisbane and has expressed a desire to come home and play in Victoria to be closer to family,” he told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“We are working through that at the moment. I don’t really have much more of an update as yet, but hopefully over the next week or so we can get a good result for Tom that allows him to play footy in Melbourne.

“I don’t really want to confirm which club or clubs we are talking to. I don’t have anywhere specific for him yet.”

GWS out to lock in Cameron for life (Jay Clark. The Australian, 09/10)

It comes as Essendon emerged yesterday as a potential landing spot for Brisbane wingman Tom Cutler.

Brisbane would like to keep the long-kicking midfielder, but given family health issues in Melbourne, have agreed to trade him.

Essendon have plenty of deals yet to broker but Cutler, who was hampered this year by a foot injury, would help aid their midfield core given his skill set.

Trade Wrap: Hawk considers three options, goalsneak still up for grabs (Mitch Cleary, Marc McGowan, Riley Beveridge, AFL.com.au, 09/10)

GRANT Birchall will spend Wednesday night working out where he believes he can win his fifth AFL premiership.

The champion Hawthorn defender is weighing up his next move, in whether to accept a deal at Waverley Park or move elsewhere, with interest from rivals including Brisbane and Gold Coast.

The Hawks had previously given their four-time premiership veteran every opportunity to assess his options during the Telstra AFL Trade Period.

But according to his agent Shane Casley, they have since offered a one-year extension to play on.

"He's very close (to making a call)," Casley, of TLA Australia, told AFL.com.au on Wednesday.

"We've spoken to three to four clubs and he'll spend tonight making a call and let me know tomorrow,"

"They've (Hawthorn) put a proposal to us, now it's up to Grant to make his mind up. They've guaranteed him a playing contract so that's waiting there."

Grant Birchall a Lion in 2020 (Josie Fielding, lions.com.au, 10/10)

The Brisbane Lions have signed free agent and four-time premiership player Grant Birchall on a one-year contract.

Birchall played 248 games in his fourteen years at Hawthorn, playing at half back.

The 31-year-old said he cannot wait to travel up to Brisbane and meet his new teammates.

“It happened reasonably quickly,” he said.

“I’m excited to start something a bit different and get up there."

Birchall worked with Senior Coach Chris Fagan at Hawthorn when he was a General Manager of Football. He said he is excited to see how Fagan operates as a coach.

“He has done some really good things at the Lions over the last few years and they were really good to watch in 2019,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to playing under him and hopefully helping the guys go the next step in 2020.”

General Manager of Football David Noble said Birchall’s addition to the team would strengthen the Lions defensive unit.

“Grant’s ability to rebound the ball with his run and carry has been an area we’ve wanted to target this trade period,” he said.

“We’re really excited with what he can offer our Club on the field as he has a track record of stepping up and playing well in big games

“We believe his want to continue to improve his game is reflective of our culture, so he will be a great fit.“

Birchall will travel to Brisbane in early November.

Trade Wrap: Dees close in on pacy Docker, Saints free agent left on the shelf (Callum Twomey, Marc McGowan, Riley Beveridge, Mitch Cleary, AFL.com.au, 10/10)

Gold Coast is chasing Brisbane's pick No.21 in exchange for speedy defender Callum Ah Chee.

The Lions have offered Ah Chee a long-term deal at the club and prised him out of their crosstown rivals after an injury-riddled year.

But there remains a gap between the parties, with the Suns wanting the Lions' early second-round pick for the 22-year-old.

Brisbane, however, has so far offered its later second-round pick – No.34 – to land Ah Chee.

Talks were expected to gain pace through the early stages of the Telstra AFL Trade Period but have stalled.

Pick 21 was originally Gold Coast's pick, having traded it last year to the Lions.

Under AFL rules, clubs are unable to trade picks back to the club from which they came in direct deals.

However, given last year's pick was traded as a future selection, and the Suns and Lions engaged in the trade not knowing exactly where it would land, it can be sent back to Gold Coast in this scenario.

Ah Chee was pick No.8 at the 2015 NAB AFL Draft, and has managed 45 games in four years at the Suns. He made only one senior appearance this year.

The Lions have targeted him to add some speed and dash to their half-back line, identifying the West Australian for his class and composure.

Brisbane list manager Dom Ambrogio was the Suns' recruiting manager when Gold Coast selected Ah Chee with the top-10 pick.

Other free agents that remain in limbo include Brisbane pair Ryan Lester and Ryan Bastinac, Richmond premiership forward Jacob Townsend, Swan Daniel Menzel and Western Bulldogs' Tory Dickson and Fletcher Roberts.

Hawk veteran Grant Birchall joins the Brisbane Lions (Peter Ryan, The Age, 10/10)
They are yet to offer intercept marking defender Josh Walker a contract for 2020, with the 26-year-old open to exploring his options throughout the trade period. Walker played 11 games in 2019 and has been a valuable depth player at the Lions.

Nick Robertson and Allen Christensen are also unsigned, with both players part of the Lions' eventual semi-final loss to the Giants.

Lions expect Taylor, Cutler to find new homes (Ronny Lerner, The Age, 11/10)

A pair of Brisbane Lions fringe players look set to be on the move with Sydney and Essendon showing interest in Lewis Taylor and Tom Cutler respectively.

Both players were regulars of the Lions’ side in 2018, with Taylor missing just three games in his first five seasons with the club.

But as the Lions experienced dramatic improvement in 2019, shooting up 13 spots on the ladder to second, Cutler and Taylor, the 2014 rising star, were starved of opportunities, managing just eight games between them.

Lions football manager David Noble expected deals to be done for the pair closer to the Wednesday deadline of the trade period.

“Both of those guys are [being looked] at [by] clubs that have got a couple of the bigger deals going so we might have to be a little patient with them,” Brisbane football manager David Noble told RSN on Friday.

“Sydney’s shown some interest in ‘Lewy’ and Essendon’s got a little bit of interest in Tom Cutler so it looks like they’re going to play out next week but obviously those two clubs [are] being involved with some of their own mega deals.”

AFL trade period state of play: The bold verdict on 28 players with uncertain futures (Josh Gabelich, Fox Sports, 12/10)

LEWIS TAYLOR (Brisbane Lions)

The Rising Star winner was a permanent fixture at the Lions until Lincoln McCarthy reignited his career at the Gabba. After managing only five games in 2019 after 107 in his first five years, Taylor looks set to move to Sydney. The Swans need to replace Tom Papley if he departs and they have a ready-made replacement in Taylor. It might only cost one of Sydney’s three late picks — 62, 63 or 81 — to get the deal done.

TOM CUTLER (Brisbane Lions)

The Victorian wants to be closer to home and to increase his senior opportunities, after struggling to break into Chris Fagan’s 22 this year. The midfielder has been linked to Essendon and Carlton. Brisbane is happy to keep the 24-year-old if a deal can’t be done and Cutler is understood to be happy to stay if that happens. Essendon remains in the box seat.

CALLUM AH CHEE (Gold Coast Suns)

The West Australian is the Suns’ latest first-round pick who hasn’t delivered. Ah Chee managed only five NEAFL appearances and one senior game in 2019 and wants to move up the highway to Brisbane. Gold Coast has its sights on the Lions’ Pick 21, but might need to settle on Pick 34 for the 45-gamer.

ARCHIE SMITH (Brisbane)

The inexperienced ruckman in on pole position to be the No. 1 ruckman at Brisbane on the eve of last season, before Stefan Martin reclaimed that position and Oscar McInerney established himself in Chris Fagan’s team. Smith is contracted until the end of 2021 but it is understood multiple clubs are looking closely at him. Uncertain where he’ll be in 2020 at this stage.

AFL trade period state of play: Which of the big deals will get done? (Herald Sun, 13/10)

Lewis Taylor

Sydney are keen but it would be for a late pick or a pick shuffle. Brained them in the NEAFL but do they still need him as much if they retain Tom Papley? Good enough to be playing AFL.

VERDICT: Up for grabs

Tom Cutler

Essendon at the front of the queue. Should play there next year. Could walk down Napier Street without Dons fans asking for a selfie but in 2018 before this year’s injury issues averaged 20 possessions, 436 metres gained as a long-kicking wingman.

VERDICT: Up for grabs

Callum Ah Chee

Gold Coast asking for pick 21 from Brisbane, who aren’t coming at that price. Has huge talent as a former No. 8 pick but too inconsistent so far.

VERDICT: Lock it in

Movers and shakers: Where your club sits in AFL trade period (Daniel Cherny and Anthony Colangelo, The Age, 13/10)

Brisbane Lions

State of play: Tagger Nick Robertson has struggled for a senior game this season and is exploring his options. Fellow fringe pair Lewis Taylor and Tom Cutler have attracted real interest from Sydney and Essendon respectively. The Lions missed out on Magpies forward Jamie Elliott.
Done deals: Secured Hawthorn veteran and four-time premiership player Grant Birchall in a free agency deal. The Lions also received a third round pick (currently No.52) and a fourth round pick (currently No.64) after giving a third-round pick (currently No.46) and a fifth-round pick (currently No.91) to West Coast.

Report: Swans to sign Lions small forward (SEN, 14/10)

Out of favour Brisbane small forward Lewis Taylor is set to put pen to paper on a three year deal at Sydney according to the Herald Sun's Jay Clark.

The 2014 rising star winner was expected to find a new home after exploring his options this trade period with the Swans all but certain to come up trumps.

It is believed the deal will be the circuit breaker for the club to release Tom Papley to Carlton with Taylor a direct replacement.

The deal may also see the Joe Daniher trade fast tracked with Essendon and Sydney still currently at a stalemate.

Taylor was drafted by the Lions with Pick 28 in the 2013 National National Draft and only managed five games in 2019.

AFL Trade Daily: Rolling trade news and whispers from across Australia for Monday, October 14, 2019 (Liam Towmey, Sam Landsberger and Jon Ralph, Herald Sun, 14/10)

Lions want second-round pick for Taylor

Brisbane has its sights set on securing a second-round pick in exchange for Rising Star winner Lewis Taylor.

Taylor struggled to cement his place in the Lions’ team this year, playing just five senior games.

The 24-year-old is set to join Sydney on a three-year deal, potentially replacing Tom Papley in a small forward role.

While Taylor’s opportunities seem limited at Brisbane, the Swans believe he can play a midfield and forward role at the SCG from next season.

The Lions already have Charlie Cameron and Allen Christensen in the forward half and are also trying to deal with Callum Ah Chee with Gold Coast.

The Lions currently have two third-round picks (No. 52 and No. 55) in this year’s draft and are eyeing a choice in the second-round from either this year’s draft or next year’s draft to finalise the deal.

The Swans may be more including to offer a third-round selection for a player who fell out of favour at the Lions this year and spent the bulk of the season in the NEAFL.

AFL trades: Lewis Taylor’s potential move from Brisbane to Sydney could unlock trade period (Jay Clark, Herald Sun, 14/10)

Brisbane wants a second-round pick in exchange for Taylor but there is certain to be some haggling over the 112-gamer’s trade worth which has taken a hit in 2019.

The Lions already have two third-round picks in next month’s national draft and want something better than those picks No. 52 and No. 55 for Taylor.

Essendon has also help preliminary discussions about pulling off deals for big-bodied midfielders Tom Cutler (Brisbane) and Aiden Bonar (GWS Giants).

The Lions and Giants both want second-round picks from the Bombers for the pair.

Bonar was taken with pick No. 11 two years ago and will struggle to break into the Giants’ senior side next year, while Cutler has also received interest from Sydney.

Essendon’s first offer to Brisbane for Cutler was believed to be No. 65 but the Lions have rejected that fourth-round selection for the out-of-contract wingman.

Cutler is out of contract at the end of the season after a tough year dealing with injury.

If the Lions and Bombers are unable to secure a deal, the Swans could swoop or even try and convince Cutler to take his chances in the national draft.

The clock is ticking: Where every AFL trade target sits heading into deadline day (Fox Sports, 16/10)

Callum Ah Chee (Gold Coast Suns)

Ah Chee requested a trade to Brisbane in August but the two Queensland clubs are in disagreement over his value.

The Suns want Pick 21 in exchange for the former top ten draft pick while the Lions are keen to spend Pick 38 on the 22-year-old.

It’s expected his final price will end up closer to 38, with later picks potentially being added to the deal.

Lewis Taylor (Brisbane Lions)

The former Rising Star winner is expected to be sent to Sydney, with a three-year deal on the table.

The small forward was initially priced at a second-round pick by Brisbane when talks began with the Swans, with the floor likely somewhere around Pick 50.

Tom Cutler (Brisbane Lions)

Cutler is likely to join Essendon with Brisbane said to be wanting a second-round pick in return.

The Bombers hold picks 31 and 33 but reportedly initially offered Pick 65 for the wingman. He is out of contract after an injury-troubled 2019.

Deadline day: How many trade dominos will fall? (Jon Ralph and Jay Clark, Herald Sun, 16/10)

Cutler set for Dons move

Essendon will secure talented Brisbane wingman Tom Cutler for a late future pick swap.

And the Lions are set to receive pick 48 for Lewis Taylor after the Swans juggle a couple of selections with Carlton in another pick swap.

Cutler has been offered only a one-year deal and a trigger by the Dons, with the Lions keen to retain him but aware he wants to be home close to a sick father.

Essendon is set to secure Carlton ruckman Andrew Phillips today but will give up little for Cutler, who played 18 games last year but battled with foot issues in 2019.

The clubs could swap their 2020 third and fourth round picks for Cutler.

The Swans and Lions have agreed upon a trade for Taylor, who will receive a three year deal from Sydney.

There is speculation the Blues will hand over pick 48 to Sydney for selections 54 and 56, with the Swans then handing the Lions pick 48 for Taylor.

Meanwhile the Lions have offered GWS pick 34 for Callum Ah Chee, but the Suns are still asking for pick 21 instead.

That deal is certain to get done by today’s trade deadline.
