Maybe we were trying to not completely gut things, and maybe the total collapse the next year was a genuine shock.
Bingo. I do reckon we were retooling here and trying to find a way to get us back to a contender within a year or two.
Allowing Crouch to walk as an FA because we thought he would bring in a first round pick is the likely point we genuinely accepted this was going to be a long rebuild.
