Do we? You can inquire during the trade period or approach the club but have we spoken directly to contracted players.

Pitching to players coming off contract through their agents is also reasonable but players mid contract?.
We've brought in Gubby Allen for exactly that reason, haven't we? For his contacts in the game. If he only spoke to people at Marvel stadium two weeks of the year why would we bother hiring him? His job is to work behind the scenes discussing deals all season.

And we all know it was pure luck Majak wasn't another one. maybe 20 years ago I thought the same but surely we are educated enough now to know how serious it is.
Luck, but also the fact he is built like a brick shithouse.
None of us dim sim eating VB guzzlers would have made it thats for sure.

Exactly, if Geelong try to take advantage of the situation, we call in the AFL, tell them we are willing but point out the Beams trade value.

I don’t like the Cats one little bit but if, as has been written on here, they offered us a good deal for Jack end of last season and we refused to trade him then this is now on us.

We cannot expect now to get as good an offer as we did then. It’s a far different situation than it was then.

All we can really hope for is a fair offer because there is now risk for them too.

When all’s said and done, we may feel dudded in a footy sense but that’s nothing compared to the good mental health and future of a young man. Because if anyone truly believes he has “picked and chosen” when to play then you have no idea.

We might as well be as p****d off with Paddy and Robbo.

Best thing that could happen is that Kelly asks for a trade to Freo and Hill asks for a trade to St Kilda, we all swap a few picks to even it up and everyone's happy.

great post

i think that's a deal we probably take. freo might have to chuck in more given kelly is far superior to the others.

Don't dispute any of that but the life of an AFL footballer involves an insane amount of travel regardless of whether you play for st kilda or geelong.

Infact it's 70kms each way between lorne and kardinia park.

Yet presumably that wouldn't be a problem?
It would be far less of a problem. The main factor is he would be much closer to his child and support network. Travel is only one of the demands an AFL player faces.

I'd be more concerned about his ability to handle the whole package. The scrutiny, pressure to perform, media spotlight and the brutal physical regime. He can do it, but any factor that lessens his burdens, no matter by how little, is worth trying.

The last thing anyone wants is for him to have a relapse. If you have one episode, you're a 25% chance of having another. Once you've had two, your condition is likely to become chronic. That spells trouble. If Jack has suffered previous bouts he needs to proceed with extreme caution. The last thing anyone needs is to turn it into a lifetime of suffering. Go well, Stuv.

I don't know what's going on with Jack Steven. All I know is I wish him well. He's been our best player in a pretty crappy era. No-one can question his effort over the years. Sure he's been well paid, but good for him... he deserved to be.

I really hope he stays, but if he leaves i'm grateful to him for his efforts at our club.

It's a dangerous game second guessing where people are really at when it comes to mental health. Pretty tacky thing to do imo.

10 to 12 years before we find out the potential of these Riewoldt kids. Imagine all 3 of them reaching their dads potential running around the club.
Knowing my luck, i'll die the year before they start dominating the competition and deliver multiple premierships!

I still believe that is the best and most realistic outcome for all.

I thought there was a bit more to his job than that, so if we don’t land several big name recruits I’ll wonder what the hell he did all year.

I've got loads of it- but I'm suprised you seem to think that employers should go to seemingly unlimited lengths to fix employees personal problems.

That’s why footy clubs are usually great employers, because a lot of the time they genuinely give a damn about their employees.
And if somebody was genuinely struggling with their mental health to the point that they couldn’t work then I’d expect most decent employers to do whatever they can to help their employee.
There’s a hell of a lot more to life than a job.

I still don't understand how his mental health has anything to do with his trade to Geelong?

It’s a personal situation with his family. He’s going through a very tough time of it and being close to the surf coast makes things a hell of a lot easier for him.
People need to realise that while footy is life to some supporters, some players don’t feel that way.
If Jack wants to leave our club then we simply must do the right thing and grant him his wish. If he goes on to play 100 games with another club then we should all be very happy because that means he got his life back on track.
