Geelong will look on this with interest.

Saying Jack has a mental illness will materially impact what we get as a trade.

If he is that unwell, it is a huge risk for Geelong. He may get worse and not play at all.

Why should Geelong pay out big for a player past his best with mental illness issues?

Don't want to sound harsh, but we say its a business, surely this is a factor for Geelong

Mental illness is more like schizophrenia, I'm not aware of his actual situation but from what I've heard it more in the depression anxiety range of conditions which are much more manageable. From rumours, being closer to where his family is located will help relieve some of those issues.

If his kid is living on the surf coast it should go a long way towards helping feel less removed from their life.

No.

Mental illness can be all types of things, including depression, bipolar, anxiety disorders, even eating disorders.

It’s a personal situation with his family. He’s going through a very tough time of it and being close to the surf coast makes things a hell of a lot easier for him.
People need to realise that while footy is life to some supporters, some players don’t feel that way.
If Jack wants to leave our club then we simply must do the right thing and grant him his wish. If he goes on to play 100 games with another club then we should all be very happy because that means he got his life back on track.
Can he not get his life back on track and play for Lorne with his mates? It sounds like he needs to get out of the AFL system altogether based on his mental health. I'd rather he retire TBH

And supporters can want what's best for Jack's health while also being really disappointed he is leaving and demand that the club receives proper compensation from Geelong taking our best player.

This is true!
Would like to add my deepest condolences Birdy on the shocking loss you have suffered at this demon!
Sadly it seems to have affected most of us these days in one way or another!

Kudos for sharing man! Stay strong Birdacious one! :fist:

Totally agree what a stupid decision that has turned out to be for both Stuv & the club. I often wonder WTF goes on in our football club we have absolutely no forsight.

An early pick in last years draft would be like gold.

In the same breath they give a complete GOP like McKenzie a 3 year extension.

Off a bottom 4 year losing your best player would have made the club hard to sell to sponsors, members and potential trade targets. Getting someone like Hanners was probably a desperate move knowing that it could be this year.

Lots of different views about, and people are of course entitled to theirs as much as I am to mine.

With that in mind, MG's post above is 100% how I feel about the situation.

Wish nothing but a long and happy future for Jack whatever happens on the footy side.

Yep imagine the uproar by some of those saying we should have let him go then if we actually did. We did the right thing. He was happy to stay. Sometimes things don't work out.

Agreed. I have a big range 15-25 but probably closer to 25 than 15.
I would want around pick 18-22, so right in your range.
Once the pick starts getting close to 30, which gets pushed back by academy selections, then I would start to get a bit disgruntled especially since it sounds like we will be paying part of his salary because there is no other possible way they could afford him.

Or maybe Jack is just sick of not playing finals and wants a crack at a flag before he retires.

That desire to play top level football and his desire to be with his family is not mutually exclusive. One may very well help the other.
I don't think anyone seriously believes he wants to play for Geelong just to be close to his family.
I agree though that having family nearby will be helpful for him. That would be helpful for any person.

Sorry, someone mentioned before that he has "mental health issues" not a "mental illness". You mention Mental Illness. Is there a difference? Is one less of an impairment than the other? Should 1 be treated any differently to the other? Or is it just semantics?

Not asking just you Plugger, but everyone in general.
Happy to chat in PM mate if you want some more information, but they definitely aren't the same thing (even if people increasingly use the terms interchangeably).

Very short and crude difference is that we all have 'mental' health the same way we have 'physical' health, and we all have 'issues' (at least to some degree) that influence our overall mental health in various ways.

On the other hand, a mental illness is a specific condition (or conditions) that have been diagnosed. There is a range of them, and within each condition there are varying levels of severity.

These two things (mental health and mental illness) are of course related. But it is possible to have damn good mental health overall and also have a diagnosed mental illness, or to have poor mental health and no actual illness etc.

Now I have just butchered a lot of nuanced research here (and apologies to any experts out there). But hopefully that very crude distinction makes sense.
