He was payed $500k a year as an ambassador and we covered the rest. But I was talking about offering Lynch a mil a year as ambassador. That’s a load of crap

500k back then with the cap 30% smaller than it is now and inflation isn't a mile away from a million dollars in today's money.

Oh course it never officially got as far as discussing dollars and cents with lynch because he never commited to staying, but hardly tinfoil hat to suggest the AFL wouldn't have paid a truckload outside the cap to keep the captain and best player there.

It’s also been reported that Bell wasn’t surprised by the Saints-Giants pick swap however he was in complete shock that St Kilda did it early on in the trade period. Apparently Bell expected to push out the Hill negotiations to the last day & even admitted to posturing as “its part of the trade game”. It would seem Bell is an egotistical knob jockey who enjoys the bartering of trade period. Lethers/Gub/Banker just displayed that they mean business & aren’t here to play stupid childish games.

I’m reasonably confident he is shocked

All the ego’s in the room together Dodo , SOS , Connors ....rock stars big game

Rapt with appreciation of the way the boys are operating to be honest , get all the other players deals done

Sorry to barge in but they certainly did not. The ambassador money is pittance. The highest payed ambassador wage in the Leauge is Pendlebury. It’s fu** all money

Curious, would you cough up 1 and 2 if it meant retaining ben for 5-6 years and getting max?

If not, what would you consider a reasonable deal to make that happen?

There was talk at the time, but you are clutching at straws mate. You asserted it was impossible the AFL would pay a million a year to an ambassador and I gave you 2 examples where that exactly did happen.

You say hunt and folau were different circumstances but the fact is in 2019 GC are just as vunerable to collapse now as they were in the hunt days.
They paid hunt that money to get bums on seats and media attention to make them less vunerable.

Nothing has changed on that front- it's hardly tinfoil hat stuff to suggest the AFL wouldn't at least consider paying the kings a pile of money outside the cap if they both signed longterm up there.
Im clutching at straws? You claimed Lynch was offered $1m Extra outside of the cap but you have zero proof.

Yes, there was talk he was going to be offered ambassadorship outside of the cap, but nothing close to that figure was ever mentioned. Coniglio gets about 30k.

No one is suggesting the AFL would dip in a bit for the Kings, but nowhere near what you are suggesting. It would not happen.

I've told you why Falou and Hunt were very different circumstances.

So I would think the playbook from here is:

Trade Pick 18 to Port for Howard & Ryder (and maybe a swap of inconsequential late picks that we're going to use for upgrades anyway). I think this deal should be done today because a) it's not too controversial and b) it shows we are getting players to our club who nominate, makes Freo look like the intransigent ones.

Monday get the Steven deal done. Maybe 37 and a swap of thirds next year, kick in some of his salary. Something so Wells can say it wasn't 37 straight and everyone moves on. 37 goes to Sydney for Jones. Unders, but I think Sydney will facilitate; consider it an even up as it turns out taking Hanna's cap space off their books last year did them a huge favour re: the play for Daniher. I could see either club (Saints or Swans) leaving a bit on the table knowing it'll come back around.

Tuesday: Focus on extracting max. worth for any Bruce trade; have a think about Butler.

I wouldn't even talk to Freo until midday Tuesday; if they enquire just say we have obligations to other players as well and need to sort those out. Go back to them on Tuesday and say here are our assets, but next year's first is off limits.

Cats fans having a laugh here surely by suggesting they're not interested in Steven or tossing up whether or not he is worth pick 37 will be the same posters that taunt us next year that they fleeced the Saints in a deal. Absolutely sickening. We know what they'll be getting with him but it is like they've never seen any film on him. Or are they that arrogant that they lose a top 10 player in the league and replace that output with pick 37 in this year's draft and still be able to contend with an aging list? What mythical player do they have their eye on in draft at that spot? Talk about ostrich syndrome. Get your head out of the sand Geelong.

He has, he's just trying to be polite. You'd never say an outright no to a player like Stuv, but they think they'll get him for peanuts if they're patient. I don't think they mind and you can see why.
yeah... i get that. But pick 93 surely wont happen. Do you believe stevo wont care if saints get reemed. Wells also reckons Geelong would rather give midfield time to the young guys currently on their list. Doesn't bode well for Stevo at the cattery... i wonder if Geelong have actually stated this fact to Stevo, if they have, and stevo truly does still want to play at the highest level, why then would he still want to go there? this baffles me.

I hope Stevo has a change of heart and stays with the club that actually cares about him and his welfare.

Max isn’t worth 1 and 2. In the slightest. Ben on exposed form is worth more and I’d expect a top 5 pick and a teens pick for him. Max is maybe worth pick 2 but he has a lot of unknown still about him. Is he just going to be a injury prone could be for the rest of his career? Obviously you will know more about him and how he is tracking but I’m not sure. Rowell and Anderson are to good to pass up as far as I’m concerned. So no I wouldn’t do it. Gotta back the team in to have more success next year and convince Ben to stay, as funny as all you will find that

Is there no chance of pick 37 for Steven if we say tip in half the salary,
obviously it's not ideal to "Pay" for a lower pick.
but surely it's a pick we need with so much on our plate and better than paying out an agreed settlement and getting nothing back?

“For where we picked him up, I’d think that mid-second-round pick, inside pick 30, if there was some interest there, but we haven’t had anyone really come to us yet and we’re not actively out there driving it so we’ll just see what unfolds there,” he said.

Aidan Bonar.

Interesting that they haven’t really had any interest.

posted this question on fox live trade blog;
if cats say 37 is not on the table for Steven, does that mean they reckon they can get him for their only other pick this year (later pick) 93? or are they thinking 2020 pick.
Matt Balmer replied;
Cats might move Pick 37 into something a bit higher ie: Pick 30 and then trade that

not sure this is right:think: but i hope so....

I know max isnt worth 1 and 2 and ben is worth more than max on exposed form.
I was more interested in your thoughts in a hypothetical situation where you guys were all but convinced ben would leave next year.
In such a hypothetical universe- would picks 1 and 2 be in the ballpark you would consider to turnaround ben leaving AND gain max?

(Im not saying this hypothetical matches reality)

So for anyone not listening to trade radio. The summary was on St.Kilda by Maclure & Dal Santo.

Our pick swap was a great move.
Freo look stupid.
Hill will be 12 + something but we're reluctant on future picks cause of Bing.
Hill not happy with Freo not taking the deal.
Freo changed their mind about the deal and asked more after we offered 6 & future 3rd.
They think 18 will go to port for Howard & Ryder
Bruce pick will go to Sydney for Jones.

McClure: I think the Saints have called Freo's bluff here. I think they've had a pretty major win in the early stages of the negotiations. I think the deal will still happen but now the Dockers have missed out on pick 6

It doesn't matter what you think!(quoting 'The Rock'). Ben is worth one pick, simple.

I think Steven is more intent on getting to Geelong, than Geelong is in having him, hence the lack of substance in Geelong's trade offerings.
Problem is Geelong can’t afford him.. I think it’s a case if they honestly can’t trade for him if soemnof his salary isn’t paid..

Dal goes from being quite a good listen, to saying Ryder plays ahead of Marshall in the ruck...

Yeah that was baffling. I mean if he said, Ryder in the ruck and Marshall at FF, King at HF and Bruce at the Dogs; Marshall to then run through the ruck I would have disagreed; but it's a coherent thought at least. He seemed to imply Marshall would be on the bench or not playing? Bizarre.
