Long has had a few years in the system and it shown glimpses IMO.

If we seriously see the potential in Draper, then we will have to pay overs for him.

Value is subjective at the best of times and on form Long is currently a 3rd round on form.

We have to pay for Draper somehow and we don't have a ton of picks to play with, so most likely a player will be needed.

We saw the potential in an untried ruck from Port once too. Barry Brokes his name was.

Have any of us actually seen Draper play? Having said that have we ever seen Long play as well as we regard him for playing....

I think I could easily see a summer where that would work out very well for us and assuming Draper is as good as we're making him appear by going hard for him then I'd do it.

Pick 5 for Papley and Jones
Long for Draper
Ryder as FA

Improves cover at ruck and key forward, upgrades our small forwards gives us a similar guy to a potentially outgoing Steven either immediately or in a step down through age

Someone else mentioned just replacing Long with Butler as well which would also work for me, but I rate Papley highly so I'd favour the above.

If we do get a late 1st for Steven then we could go for an injured Kemp or one of the 'vanilla' mid ball winners that always fall further than they should.

IMO Papley & Jones are more B-graders that would be useful but not really what we need, especially not when a top 5 pick is involved.

Long for Draper is yuck. Longy has heaps of talent but is only putting it together in brief bursts. The last thing I want to see is him becoming a consistent, goal kicking, rib shaking presence in a bloody red and black jumper. Draper? 3rd rounder

I do like your suggestion for Paddy Ryder but hes not a FA.

It's a long way out but a trade week that sees a few of the following would be delicious;

Ins

*Pick 5 & 2020 2nd rounder to GWS for Jye Caldwell, pick 16 & 2020 2nd rounder
*Pick 16 to Freo for Brad Hill
*Stephen Hill as a FA
*Stuv to Geelong for pick 18 & 54 (their 3rd rounder)
*Pick 54 to Essendon for Draper (EAD Dopers)
*GWS 2020 2nd round pick to Sydney for Zak Jones
*Something that Port want to Port for Paddy Ryder (2 years at good coin).

Outs
*Seb Ross to whatever Vic team that makes finals but falls short for their 1st rounder (mid teens)
*Newnes gone as a FA (no compo)
*Delistings/Retirements as expected.

Take pick 18 and the other mid teens pick to the draft for best midfield sliders.

In
2 x ruckmen (one experienced who can swing forward, one developing)
1 x dual inside/outside yet to be proven mid (Caldwell)
3x outside mids (Hills x 2, Jones)
2 x top 20 picks

Out
Club champion mid x 1
A few picks and pick downgrades
A few fringe best 22's
Delistings and retirements.

Where would Ryder play unless we are his only option he isn’t coming to us to play seconds and he isn’t a good forward and not as good as Marshall in a he ruck. Our second ruck just needs to fill in. Draper long term. Just a fill in next season who is happy in the seconds.

If Steven does go (which I think he does) then I think we will try and either work into the Kelly trade if he chooses Freo for Hill, or if not then I think we’ll try for one of their young mids.
Funny thing is I have a suspicion that if we had agreed to the Steven trade last year, Kelly is in WA and we would have had another high pick and maybe Caldwell or RCD on our list.
Swings and roundabouts.

2 years - Carlisle, Dunstan, Langlands

1 year - White, Mayo, Geary, Brown, Savage, Austin

Delist - Rowe, Longer, Pierce, Rice

Retire - Roberton, McCartin, Armitage

???? - Newnes
I have no idea where he got that OOC list from. We triggered Gears' contract clause for 2020 last month. Sav signed a new deal three weeks ago. And the details of Austin's contract are murky, apparently he is contracted until end of next year.

Think Carlisle will want more than 2 years at his age. 3 or4 seems fair to me

It came from FootyWire. I only just recalled Savage's resign and edited to update. Can see now about Gears contract clause, will update list for that.

Hard to believe the hill someone has chosen to die on is a vigorous defence of trading out Marshall and King.

Almost equals the all time champ series of posts on SS back in the day proclaiming Steven to be the worst players ever to pull on a Saints jumper.

That argument aged well.

One thing here , they are saying the Demons have there hooks into him- do you really think the other mids at Melbourne would really like losing more midfield time - I doubt it very much and with Oliver , Viney , Harmes , Brayshaw , Petracca someone is going to be missing out in midfield time and the state at which Melbourne are in you could easily make a case for Brayshaw moving on.

If we miss Cogs. I’d give him 900k for 5 years. That also allows us to give 700k to Jones.

Brayshaw trade:
Carsile for Brayshaw.

Win-Win both are about the same ability and will both have long and successful careers. The Dees need another tall and we need another midfielder. The trade works out perfectly for both teams.

Jones trade;
Jones for Sinclair

Both players are the same age and both at similar points in their career. Jones has a high turnover rate, but is a tad better then Sincs.

900k for Brayshaw?
Another player with concussion issues for our best KPD?
And why would Melbourne trade for another key defender after they just brought in May and Lever.

My thoughts on those out of contract:

Delist/Retire - Armitage, Pierce, Longer, Rowe
Armo's body just isn't up to it anymore, due for retirement.
Pierce and Longer both still suffering concussion issues and Marshall has blown past them in development as 1st ruck, better to seek alternatives here (Essendon's Draper, Alabakis, Biggy from our Academy)
Rowe was just a top up as we were thin on key defenders. Deserves at least 1 senior game before years end to hit 100 games. Make it round 22.
Hold - Dunstan, Carlisle, Langlands, Austin, Mayo
Dunstan's really stepped up his game, but needs a big bodied mid for support.
Carlisle I feel probably isn't 100% match fit. Still class and needed.
Langlands is still green. Won't know for a while. Resign.
Austin's injury has slowed seeing on whether or not he's a Brown replacement. Keep on.
Mayo is a key forward prospect. Keep for at least 2 years and see how dev pans out
Unsure - Newnes, Rice, White, Brown
I feel like Brown could still go another year or two fitness wise, plus we don't want to strip out too much in the way of leadership/experience as we're pretty thin on that already.
Rice and White always seem like they're on the verge of selection, but we've got a lot of small/medium defenders ahead of them. Hard to say what should happen here. Repurpose White as a forward? Maybe they step up in selection if whoever ahead of them leaves in the next year. Need a run in seniors to see if they have trade currency.
Newnes. The big question mark. Can he get out of his slump and play like he did at the start of the year? Does he have trade currency? Does he provide something to the team that others don't. Too many questions
As for contracted players:

I hope Roberton and McCartin retire for their healths sake.
Names of contracted players that i'd tentatively put up as only maybe tradable are; Long, Phillips, Sinclair, McKenzie, Acres, Young. They all still have a spot though if a deal in our favour doesn't appear.
Otherwise I don't think we really need to put all that much on the table end of year. Last year we traded out 1 (Hickey) and had 8 players delisted/retired. We did most of the cull then.

IMO Papley & Jones are more B-graders that would be useful but not really what we need, especially not when a top 5 pick is involved.

And out another best and fairest in Ross, that's two of them. The older Hill is done, he'd be a charity pick up to make his brother come. It's not looking as attractive then We would swap
Ross for Jones- down grade
Hill for Stuv- down grade
Newnes for draft pick
Ryder for Longer- upgrade
Draper for Pierce- unknown.
Caldwell probably the next Freeman.

I don't know why getting rid of the players who are best 22 is everyone's idea of good list management. We need to stack the list and with Stuv probably going we already get access to someone like Hill.

Remember it well. I noticed a couple of weeks ago he still claimed he was eventually proven right

Who was it? That's an outstanding effort.

Melbourne need Carlisle like I need eggplant. Jones for Sinclair. Yep. That’s as much hope of Jennifer Hawkins walking in my house tonight demanding sex
