Why? Out of contract at years end and hasn’t signed?

If he does it won’t be with us though. He had no interest before and since when do the top players ever come to us?

Billings also out of contract and not signed, so in the same position although the noises are good that he will.

obviously wouldn't trade ross unless it was part of a deal that secured an elite mid back, Cogs, Whitfield, etc
Funny that we all pretty much acknowledge our list shortcomings.

And then as soon as possible scenarios are suggested, same people lose their shit over it.

Our midfield is pedestrian.

It's why we recruited Hanners. He will drag the team into battle with him.

It's why certain mids were put up for trade last year, but no one came knocking because they were too good.

It's why no one was able to stand up on Saturday when needed. Same problem.

It's why we have to leave no stone unturned to recruit the best we can.

If we have to trade the Mercedes to land a Rolls, I don't see the problem. What you don't do is sell the merc for Two Hyundais.

Because the only way we will challenge is if the current crop become A grade and / or elite. Great if they do.

But if they don't we are ****ed for another 10 years.

Plenty will disagree and that's OK.

Let's see how the rest of the year plays out.

Hyperthetical - would trade Acres and Seb for Kelly and Tomilson?
Mikka like your thinking , but to offload 2 players that have been loyal to a place they wouldn't want to go - would not give the team that warm fuzzy feeling.
We just use first round draft picks - this years and next if need be , we know we have been screaming for mids as was shown on the weekend , but lets just see what happens this year before we s/it can anyone.
Ross is our captain and Acres is my great white hope - this could be his year.

We are going to have plenty of cap space
Tomlinson is a FA - will only cost money
And I'm sure 2 first round draft picks would secure a Kelly type.

We will also have plenty of squad spots to fill
McCartin
Roberton
Longer or Pierce or Both
Rice
Rowe
Dunstan will most probably leave
Armitage

Actually had he left, we were very close to getting him.

Really? Thought he was off to North?
Are you telling me John telephone number was correct....?

What if...

The two players aren't as good as we need them.to be?

Surely the same rules of dispensable apply to then as well?

This was a hypothetical.. not a debate on whether Kelly would or wouldn’t come to us. He’s the biggest name out of contract, so couldn’t think of a more relevant person?

According to my mail, yes. Was going to wait and see how both clubs went last year, and we were out after that shambles of a season. Will more than likely stay, but I reckon the club hasn't given up just yet.

totally agree, it's like people can only read up until 'trade ross!' and then anything written after that is all greek.

this decade of mediocrity has some of us forgetting how it feels and what it means to be an actual good side. At the moment we're no where near it. We're playing some decent footy and we're organised structurally so we've got the jump on a few teams, but we're a far cry from where we were in 2004, let alone 2009. It's still a work in progress, the 22 is not set

Im fairly close with the ceo up there. Was speaking with him right in the middle of it all. He said it’s basically between us and them, and Josh had legitimately not made his mind up.

Now fast forward 2 years, could be completely different.. he may very well stay there for his career or go to Hawthorn or sign with us on monster coin.. who knows.

Oh well then, all systems go, Gubby!
Maybe Martin and Jones are just “ smoke and shadows behind the mirrors.”

Still not sure he’ll leave a team on the cusp. Well have to go very close to finals to be a chance.

Good to hear.

I think that if we are to answer that question honestly, and it's in the affirmative, then let's cut the bs and admit that almost anyone is on the table for the right price.
That’s probably the state of our list. No stars and a lot of even rated players..

Yeah I heard from a non footy source close to his family that he was going to see how we went and after last years effort, if he left it would be North.

That said, this year's form has defs thrown a spanner into that theory, do who knows

Hopeful and deflated in the space of five posts....thanks for nothing! :p
The best pointer I can possibly give - we didn’t get Gubby in for nothing. He’s on a 2yr contract for these exact scenarios. It’s the first time we’ve actively done something to get these players. A first time for a lot of things.. which is why I’m so upbeat over the next few years. We’re starting to look like a professional outfit behind the scenes.

Now for M King to deliver what we all know he can. There will be mids lining up just to have the pleasure of kicking to him.

He's one of the best in the biz so fingers crossed.
