That's fine. Simply agreeing a trade like that would be madness.Still not sure if anyone said we should trade Ross for a second and then a draft an 18 year old.
Absolutely and the club will not do it.That's fine. Simply agreeing a trade like that would be madness.
What you’re saying is true, that’s not a trade anyone would make imo.
That doesn’t change the fact the everyone is on the table if the price is right and our list as it stands isn’t really a finals team imo, we may be close with some luck but that’s it. So barring some extraordinary drafting you still need to trade and you’re wasting time throwing up guys who aren’t worth a third round pick. Then you add in the reality that players get older and retire so there’s usually guys on the up and others on their way out.
So with one first round pick and not much else except future picks how do we make that leap?. Jack Steven is one of my all time favourites and I really rate Newnes. If they both wanted out and the return is right does that constitute a disaster or an opportunity?
I trust the team we have in place for the first time in ages to make the right calls and I don’t mind posters spitballing trades, fortunately we’re not making the decisions it’s just a bit of fun.

Pretty sure Newnes is a FA and can just walkDraft picks are such an inflated currency when they are used to select kids without much if any senior footy exposure.
Drafting is literally a gamble & the higher the pick the better the odds. When we are talking picks in the second round the risk of getting a bust or a player inferior to Seb Ross is significant.
I honestly see no reason why we would trade Ross unless the risk was drastically lowered for example an extremely high pick, or even better, a proven player.
Unless you are the Pelican you don’t make trades for trades sake. It’s really simple, trade / draft to improve the team. If you go outside those parameters then you shouldn’t hold a position in list management. The exception is if the player forces the club into a trade like what may happen with Tim Kelly. But look how hard Geelong (a proven pro club) are trying to retain him.
I really hope Steven doesn’t force the clubs hand but if he does I could stomach his loss more than Ross who is a leader at the club, three years his junior & right in the prime of his career.
Regarding Newnes, I wouldn’t trade him unless the reward was high. He’s also in his prime years, a leader at the club & sits comfortably in the best 15 players on our list. Unless the club is looking to replace his position with someone else then I don’t see why we would trade him.
I’ve also got trust in the current football department & believe we will make the correct list management decisions. They’ll inevitably get some things wrong but you can tell they have a clear strategy to improve the team. The trading of Hickey shows they didn’t consider him best 22 going forward. Trading in Hanneberry & Kent & mature players via the draft shows they are attempting to resolve the list demographic by position & age.
To he fair the VDS never said he'd trade him for that, just that he thought that's what he was worth. It sounds like something Pelican would do by trying to be smart but outsmarting himself & ending up being the dill of the room.
Seriously, we are borderline finals as it stands, & some people want to trade our current acting captain, B&F winning, top 5 player on our list for a pick 20-40?
In all seriousness, unless we were in full-rebuild mode I wouldn’t accept anything less than a top 5 pick. Our most recent top 10 picks aren’t even playing senior footy & some want to trade away one of our best players for another 18 year old that’s taken 20-40? LMAO.
Luckily those at the club are not stupid enough to ever consider that trade because they are in the business of making our team better ie retaining our better players & players with leadership qualities & instead trading / delisting players that are not in our best 22 going forward.
Even if this trade was brought up in the “War Room” I reckon Gubby would smack the fool across the head & send him on his way.
Unfortunately topping up with B graders won't help.I think Newnes is a FA so not worth more than about a late second early third in compo. Keeping would be better, Stuv sounds more likely to retire than leave if he doesn't want to go around again. To me our depth is a bit light on so we don't have much to trade. We have very young or unestablished players, oldies with no value or best 22. That means the draft is about the only way we can improve.
Last season we did really well from the draft especially late, spending time on FA is probably worth keeping an eye on but all our energies should be on the drafting of talent and perhaps cherry picking B graders with youth on their side to fill obvious needs.
To he fair the VDS never said he'd trade him for that, just that he thought that's what he was worth.
Hit the nail on the headI didn’t even see his post. But you made me go back & look & you are wrong. When someone asks, “what are you hoping to get for Ross”, & the response is, “ 1 x second rounder”, I don’t know how else to take it unless it was a joke that went completely over my head?
Anyway, my point has been made, I completely disagree with trading out our better players. We should be trading depth & fringe unless forced by the player or to get maximum reward, which a second round pick for Ross is not.

We are light on for options IMO. You either want and hope the current kids become elite in a few years from now and hover mid table for the next few years or you go down the nature age path.
And even with the hits like Parker (potential at this stage) or Hind (ahead of Parker), you still don't have those elite players that we desperately need.
Something has to give and I suspect there will be a few pissed off supporters come October.
Thinking a player is with a second and saying we should trade him for a second are two different issues...I didn’t even see his post. But you made me go back & look & you are wrong. I get where you're coming from.I think for holes a B grader is fine, you really want to nail your high picks ideally to get stars. Getting a gun recruiter to me is almost the most important appointment. I hope we don't do dumb stuff to look active, I have some serious trust issues with our recruiting staff.
Sometimes elite players are already there but slow to arrive. Ross is probably A grade now, Billings is definitely on 2019 form, Battle looks likely to be at least well above average, Gresh on his way, Lonie has come from nowhere to look likely to be well above average etc.
At the end of the day we need to improve our list so we have strong depth of talent, losing one to gain one is stalling, not progressing, especially if they are in your top 10 players.
Very few superstars change hands and if they do they ten to go to the higher profile successful clubs. We need to work our own plan not follow because we are unique, we have a good culture at the club with a group that seems to really like each other. We need to find our own stars in the raft and trade for above average talent because we aren't going to attract stars until we look good from outside.
To he fair the VDS never said he'd trade him for that, just that he thought that's what he was worth.
Nearly on the money..This post has aged VERY well!
I don't think you'd want two Danihers in one team and if he is a ruckman a top 10 pick would be a high price. To me all our energies have to go into a FA mid and if that fails the best quality genuine mid in the draft with our pick. If he genuinely can become KPB then he's worth looking at but I'd be seriously keen to see what he looks like at GC once he starts playing. If he ends up around the level of Weitering or Schache you probably wouldn't rush to get him.
Don't forget Jinx [emoji6]Yeah but Winx and Binx make Daniher look like an injured Billy Longer
Nearly on the money..

Can you please post that you bet Coniglio signs with the saints tomorrowNearly on the money..
