Who did they off load? The lost Buddy against their wishes and really haven't lost any top line stars apart from that. They retired a few while rebuilding but that was a different phase to us.
Just a couple of hacks that ran 1st and 2nd if their B&F

Every week he doesn't get a game I hope Gallagher is ringing up Brayden Sier's manager.

FWIW - of all the players we have to put on the trade table, I'd be looking at Blake Acres. Such a tease that he still may actually have some reasonable trade value.

Like Geelong who pioneered picking the state league players and identified alternative talent streams. Tim Kelly and Tom Stewart are guns that cost chump change for example. Gary Rohan looks like a superstar at the Cats, Stanley is playing brilliant footy, Danger for cheap etc. Nearly everything they do in last management ends up working.

They did NOT pioneer it.

StKilda : Captain.. Rookie List.
Highest goal kickers : Bruce, Low cost trade. Membrey, Delisted.
Third Tall : Wilkie
Preferred Ruck: Marshall ( Vic country football ).
Small forwards : Long / Parker State level footballers.

That's around a third of our playing list. 3 others that may still crack the squad.

Other attempts where the talent spotters weren't quite on the money, but you could see what they were trying to do.
Saad, Milera, Dennis-Lane, Lee.

It's not the strategy that let us down , it was the execution.
Those bagging Pelchan, ( who was not the one who identified the talent ) are off the money.

Imagine if we'd got the equivalent to Parker, Wilkie and Ross for Pick 25. Both Saad and Milera had the potential but didn't quite make it at AFL level.
We also tried with Dunell and Shenton.

Particularly I thought that Saad was really really close before the stimulent saga.

Completely different points in the cycle though, they lost guys who were at the end to rebuild, we are trying to build up still.

Alright, not pioneers but the most recent example of a club nailing it.

Footy is a tough industry, the losers are forgotten or derided while the winner gets the spoils and is held up as a beacon of excellence.

I think it really came to prominence when they grabbed Pods and it worked so well for them.

He was probably the first high profile recruit.

Even Beau Maister would have won a Coleman with their midfield.

Seem to recall a mature age ammo who went alright. I think his name was Thompson...

wait are you two friends again? wth tune out for one second

And we have the timing of a failed stand up comedian.

We came up against one of the best teams of the modern era in 09.
Don't forget 2010/11 pies, their candle didn't burn as long as the cats, but one of the most dominant teams over a season or 2 since Essendon 2000, and not matched since. (Tigs pretty good Sep '17- aug '18 but in a weaker feild)

Cogs is FA. Hopper, Whitfield, Taranto are the ones I'd go after.
Taranto would be good just looking at his numbers then 3 for fantasy in the entire GWS side. Just Cogs and Whitefield above him.

Come in peace guys ... I saw on the news tonight that JackSteven is going to take an extended period from the game .. I was wondering if you think this now will put the whole trade question to bed ?

On the Geelong pioneer thing .. I doubt we were the first to recruit from lower levels , for a fair while Wells only wanted kids but id say the value method probably evolved from Geelong having late picks and keeping its own VFL side when most others linked to a traditional vfa side. Guys were training against listed guys and they could gauge their worth. One of the first players that came from our VFL was probably Matty Egan who went on to be AA before his injury. Bringing in Pods was a bit of luck , and a bit of a rule change that allowed older Rookies. Id say but in recent years we have given plenty of shots to locals and not all work. Ruggles for eg. Some work , some don't.
