Rubbish; it was discussed ad nauseum today on radio, the Sunday footy shows and an even better analysis on the Final Crack with Dixon and King. All highlighted how bad Witherden was in that contest, so how can you honestly say it’s nonsense? The only ones who don’t believe it are precious Lions fans because every other person who follows AFL knows what a pathetic effort it was.
Witho wasn't the reason we lost. There was other factors like giving the away team 4 goal head start or the fact we weren't converting from our forward 50 entries, even though we had 17 entries more then GWS for the game.

The game has evolved so far beyond the point where you can sensibly blame one or two individuals for losses. Yet we have a couple of posters who just pot a couple of individuals after each week based on a couple of isolated incidents and consider themselves incisive analysts.

I guarantee any coach in the modern era would look at such “analysis” and smirk.

That’s right.

The blame lands on those who didn’t get enough fantasy points.

Feel like Witherden isn't going for as many attacking kicks as he was in his 1st or 2nd season. Seems like every kick is always long to a contest probably due to a gameplan. Players like Rich (he always lowers his eyes and kicks acurately) and Witherden should be told to always look for a player first.

In refefrence to this thread tho, hoping we can have Laird. We need someone off half back, although hoping Cox can fill that void

Not blaming him for the loss but it was a piss weak effort which led to the decisive goal that won the game . I think witherdon has been extremely poor this season seems to constantly gets smashed by players quicker then him and in the past has given way too many team members stick when he isn’t living up to the standard himself . His kicking this year and that’s what he is supposedly good at hasn’t been great . Let’s hope him and Rayner decide not to get stuck into the cheese platters as much this off season because they both lack aerobic endurance.

Robertson should be retained. Stepped up massively and managed to wear Whitfield like a glove for large parts of the game. He could be a Mr Fixit type we rotate through the wing and half back.

Jack Payne should play off in the off-season against Adams and Walker for 2nd Kpd. We can then look into swinging Adams forward. He and Mcstay could play off for the 2nd Kpf role.

Trade targets wise we need to get a pacey half back. We rely too much on Rich to be that link and penetrating kick off half back. Anyone with pace in half back to generate overlap run would really elevate this team

On Rayner; he needs to learn to mark; badly.

Two crucial dropped marks late in the game that would have given him a simple set shot and then late in the game when it went right through his hands and falconed him.

Both need to put in a lot of hard work if they are to be even average AFL players.

From last nights and Tigers game
We need a lead up forward.. when teams play spares in defence we just bomb to the pack and 50-50 if we turn it over.
No one leads up... Last night a couple of times we squared someone up.. Although mostly we kicked to Davis or Grimes or whoever is the good defender.
So go for Elliot
Need some pace in the backline. Lester prob replace Hodge. Will Coleman add the spark.
I go for Laird.

Some class in the midfield be good someone bigger bodied no idea who.

If you look at last year.
We went Adams to who pushed Walker out.
McCarthy who pushed Taylor out.
Laird for Hodge
Elliot for Bailey or Bundy

Still not sold on resting ruck in forward line.

Rayner and Witho probably has some merit. Both have more talent then they show consistently.. Rayner does drop marks he should take.
Witho does get caught out . Although they both really young.
This is a trade thread.. Do you want to trade them?
I think Harris Andrews sometimes slow getting rid of the ball and picks bad targets.. Should we get rid of him as well
They are young guys.. Watch Hodge and all the years of footy and what he does.
It does take time.

Can we stay on topic? If you want to talk about the game or current players progression/form do it elsewhere.

Bless you sweet mod.

Hopefully Ely Smith will be the bigger bodied class in the mid field. We have players in the wings for almost every position we're lacking in

Probs the wrong thread to post this on as this is the trade thread, not Lions discussion.

Also, I keep seeing Zac Williams show up here. It would be a complete miracle if we got him, he’s GWS through and through at this point.

Look I’ve been busy looking into my crystal ball, and all I see us picking up is “Ah Choo, bless you” and that will be it. Brace yourself people.

There's a opportunity to grab him these year as he's coming out of contract next year, along with Cameron, Whitefield and Finlayson. They can't retain all of them considering how much they had to fork out to retain Coniglio and Kelly. Plus they are interested in Robertson. I can see the club packaging our 1st round pick with Robertson to get the deal done.

The reason he shows up here is that his skills are exactly what we're missing between half back and midfield. He himself might not be obtainable if GWS are prioritising him with their limited remaining cap space, but there are lesser versions of him floating around who are gettable.

I agree mentioned before do we trade or grow.
This year I pretty sure we only debut Answerth. Previous years would of been everyone who was drafted :)
NEAFL is a concern watching the Grand Final pressure wise. Not sure what they learning as a giant step up.
So if we have a settled 15-16 next year with injuries.. How much real pressure game time does Smith, Joyce, T Berry etc get?
Thought it was hard on Cox to get the Tigers game.. they need 2-3 to get used to tempo.

We can play them in the preseason games

Other than that we wait until someone is injured / suspended / out of form or experiment when we have games V Suns

I eagerly wait to see who we pick up come trade time. Our club has smacked it out of the park with recruiting over the past few years. Especially when it comes to Suns or Crows ill back in the fairly good knowldege we have about those players considering our strong connections to those clubs.

So into the off season, before the player exit interviews and their holidays I though I give it a crack to see how close I get.

In the keeping basket;

Eagles (hope the AFL agrees) Payne, Skinner, Cox, Walker, Wooller, Starcevich, Mathieson, Lester, Hinge, Fullerton, Madden and Ballenden - this group still have improvement and shouldn't be looking for more opportunities yet. (all last year's draftees obviously have another season)

Nick Robinson in the same basket (thought he played well against GWS really stopped Whitfield fantastically and I think we might play a tagger more often next year against certain opposition)

In my basket of; love to have you but this is footy, understand if you can get a trade go for it but we think you have topped out - Keays, Cutler, Bastinac, Taylor, Alison, Corey Lyons, Archie Smith. I'm not saying they are poor players, never, never just think this group we get what we can for to find some more that we think could get better.

Suns could move up next year well hope they can.. First half of the season they not crap.
Preseason up and down depends on who you play and which of their best 22 plays.
I understand we are where a lot of other good clubs have been. Pretty settled 22.
Not something be fixed overnight NEAFL compared to SANFL, VFL and WAFL a lot lower standard to play in.
GWS, Swans and Suns high injury list so even against those teams we playing against a lot of top ups.
Just hope we have a good 2020 with injuries.

If you look who came in and out this year under 10 games they all played before apart from Hinge I forgot debut as well this year.
Lester/Matho (9), N Robbo/Taylor (5), Basti/Cutler (3) Keays/Basti/Archie/Allison/Hinge (2) and Starc/Cox(1).
Out of 13 only 5 played under 20 AFL games Starc/Hinge/Alison/Cox and Smith, who only got a couple of games each.

I think the young kids need 2-3 games to get used to the speed.
If we have low injuries next year. Be hard for them to just step up while someone injured.
Be hard to drop guys so some young kid gets experience.

Hence back to the grow or trade.
I think we have a lot of kids ready although I say we aiming top 4 again.
I always think you trade in to replace current 22.
Liard replace Hodge
Elliot push either Bundy/Bailey/Linc out or into another spot.

I'd say at this stage C. Lyons, Allison and Bastinac are outright delistings.

Cutler, Taylor and Robertson will all attract interest elsewhere. I think Keays could be a de-list to re-rookie type of scenario, depending if there's interest elsewhere. I think it's a coin toss between Taylor and Keays to stay on the list depending on how trade period goes.

OUT: C. Lyons, Bastinac, Allison (Delist), Taylor (Trade), Cutler (Trade)
Everyone else: Keep
