I certainly haven't heard this Daniher talk. If true, it would be a great.
The Laird to Lions talk started in May and we will find out soon if its all BS or true. The fact that his name has now been mentioned tells me that the talk in May was spot on. Don't be surprised if Tom Morris or Damien Barrett break this story soon.
Have also heard that we are very much into Ceglar - whether we like it or not.
Rory Laird:thumbsu:> Perfect replacement for Luke Hodge, still 5+ years left in the system and one of the best in the league at what he does.

Jonathan Ceglar:thumbsdown:> Too old, 29 before start of next season and with Stef signing on for another season I think we have the ruck covered for 2020 ie. Stef, O, Archie, Ballenden and I also think the reason we're attempting to keep Matty Eagles on the list could be as ruck cover in case of a long term injury, Matty was played in the ruck a bit towards the end of the NEAFL H&A season.

On the basis that we trade for need I just don't get the Ceglar or Daniher talk while I certainly see Rory Laird filling the Hodge spot as you have clearly indicated...

The Ceglar one is interesting. It tells me a few things:-
- Martin only has one more year
- Club not happy with the development of A Smith and/or Ballenden
- Prefer a mature-age ruckman moving forward.

The Daniher one is more intriguing :-
- Is it Ess (via Watson) using it as a tool to drive up his price (ie Sydneys pick 4 and change)???

The Gary Lyon mention of Daniher on SEN I heard was we are getting a lot of this via the text machine. Tim then said everyone wants to go to the Lions as a throw away line.

There was very little substance.

Not sure if this was the only reference for the morning. If it was I am taking it with a grain at this stage.

I won't believe the Daniher discussion until there is an official trade request and even then I'll be sceptical. Would be a very very difficult trade to get done and would certainly take two first round picks. Big injury question mark too.

Having said that, would be a huge addition - he's much better than all of our tall forwards. But I can't see it happening.

That makes way more sense than the way it was first mentioned in this thread.

If all 3 happen, it'll show we have decided not to be perennial finals bridesmaids and have gone all-in for a flag.

Surely we don’t need Daniher if we have Hipwood, they’re pretty much the same player. Just one kicks less goals when fit.
Daniher is a better contested mark. Something we do lack.

If we get Daniher, laird and ceglar I would lose my mind, even have just Laird would be enough, his run and spread is unbelievable, honestly it should allow for witho/rich to better utilize their kicking skills

I think the idea of "trade for need" has been overblown. The full statement is "draft for talent, trade for need", and I interpret that as meaning we don't reach for poorer talents in the draft just because they meet a need, not that need is the exclusive reason why we trade.

We didn't actually have a need for Marcus Adams last year, Walker was covering that role well enough, but we traded for Adams because he's better. Similarly, we have no need for another flanker and we're apparently going after Callum Ah Chee. The only reason I can give for that is his talent.

Perennial finals bridesmaids!

We've been perennially not even invited to the wedding.

I think journalists have almost completed every possible option of a player moving to a club

Record time this year

So would Daniher most likely cost Us Collingwoods first pick and someone like Squiggy Taylor who according to Jon Ralph Essendon are chasing ? I think Daniher would be a great pick up
For a 25 year old All Australian, in contract, playing one of the most valuable positions? They'll want much more than that. If he goes for less than what Hogan went for then Essendon got robbed.

Given where our picks are, I'd imagine they'd want two firsts, or a first plus a second plus McStay.

Lets be honest though Hogan was in decent form and had no ‘major’ injuries, Daniher is struggling to get on the park whilst having up and down form when on the park. Surely Collingwoods first/ Cutler or Coll 1st and a third round/4th round upgrade could do it

The Daniher talk would make more sense to me if McStay hadn’t signed on. I can’t see how we could bring in 2 A grade players this period (Big Joe and Laird) unless our future first was put on the table. Players such as Squizz, Keays, Cutler etc wouldn’t bring in the currency that we would need to get the deal over the line.

Yes, he did. He had a stress fracture to the navicular bone at Melbourne, and people talked about the risk Fremantle were taking on as it is a major injury. And he fractured it again this season.

I wouldn't say "surely" at all. I think Essendon would laugh at that offer and demand another pick in the first two rounds at minimum.

Yeah I had a look and it seems my memory wasn’t the best on this one!

Yeah I’m in agreeance now!

Admittedly Hogan hadn't sat out for two seasons due to injury at that time. And he was only 23, Daniher will be 26 next season. But I reckon Daniher is a better player. Also note Daniher will be an RFA at the end of next year. We could sign him then, but if we want him now then we need to pay at least the mid-first round pick Essendon would get as FA compensation plus a premium for the extra year.
