2019 Trade thread

Imagine Stef Martin retiring next year and we offer Grundy an almighty contract. Akin to what Swans did on the last hour with Buddy. Would he want to go back to the crows now? Or have another tilt in a decent midfield? We dont have a chance but the melts would be great.

If we were going to play fantasy list manager and talk about players who have no realistic chance of playing for us, Cameron wouldn’t be top 5 for me.

Grundy
Cripps
Fyfe
Martin
Gawn

Actually, I’m not even sure he’d be the first bloke Id take from GWS. It would be the likes of Coniglio, Whitfield, JKelly and (after yesterday!) Williams first, I suspect.

Williams game was very impressive yesterday, not the only time he’s shown that potential this year either. The talk earlier in the thread was how good he would fit in our backline, but geez he’s looked good in the midfield. The pressure around the ball and that run down tackle, just reminded me of what Zorko offers us, would be the ideal replacement for him.

Personally couldn’t see anyone giving GWS enough to move him on a year early. I’d presume he’s not on huge cash, especially comparing to what he’s producing, and for a team right in their window with a salary cap squeeze, that absolute gold. Similar situation to Geelong hold Kelly on his Rookie contract.

With the cash GWS have to pay Coniglio, Kelly, Cameron, Green etc and planning for Whitfield free agency, Taranto and Hopper potential increases too. Someone like Williams is every chance of getting squeezed out in free agency with a decent offer. I just think GWS would happily take the potential trade currency lost to have another tilt next year with Williams.

Hard to imagine...Talk is Pies are going to offer Grundy a long term, (7 years) 1 million a season which means they will need to offload players if Grundy accepts...Grundy has publically stated that he wants to be closer to his family in Adelaide... His younger brother, Riley is at Port and named to play today in the SANFL grannie..both SA clubs would need to offload some players to get Grundy under their cap...Adelaide is in the box seat which is why clubs are circling what they believe are gettable contracted players.

Answerth may move up into the midfield next season.
I read an article where he states he always wanted to be a small defender. Personally I would leave him back as I think we have found one there. Not bad a player drafted in the 50’s. In regards to mids playing AFL they usually have always been mids in their younger days.

If.

If I had the choice of any gamebreaker it'd be Williams.

Cutting edge. Line breaker. Huge runner. Involved in the heat of the moment.

Not many around.

Pure hyperventilation of course. No club in its right mind would let him go.

Club openly states they would still look to build the midfield and he was a mid in his younger days. Would add a difference to our midfield and with the selling point of more midfield minutes, $$$ and contract length you never know. Club can only ask his management. However this trade would take a fair bit to get done.

This. The one position we were poor at the beginning of season, we found one finally. I'd take a heath Shaw type career on half back from Answerth which is a need for us compared to turning him into a midfielder.

I wonder if Collingwood would want to move on Sidebottom

Apparently Grundy wants seven years, Pies are only offering 3. That's the sticking point.

Apparently Brandon Ellis is a good chance of going to Gold Coast as a free agent, worth us checking in with him? - could be half back option or another midfielder.

If we're looking to make a big offer to a star, I'd be keeping our wallets ready for next year, where there are much better players out of contract. One decent veteran like Laird/BSmith plus Ah Chee is a good enough period to me this year.

He isn't a half back though, he's a winger. We already have two good wingers and Ellis will cost more than he's worth. It makes sense for Gold Coast because they can't attract anyone better right now, and they're pretty starved for outside mids. We don't have either of those problems, so we shouldn't bother with him.

That's because good players usually play midfield. They get to state level and teams are typically all mids and a few key position players, it's at that point kids get farmed out to a wing Or a flank.

My thoughts , I believe all lions players would gain an immeasurable sense of belief and confidence knowing they have a coleman medalist down forward. Can you put a price on that ? Some things are completely unmeasurable.
If it meant ,in terms of cost, then going one short on the list , i believe it would be worth it..The forward line. I watched, during the finals lacked a dedicated full forward. Cameron would be a focal point that if brisbane lions continues their policy of bombing it into the foward line ( i think you would at the very least agree if me was frightening to watch and completely stupid ) like they did ,cameron would at the very least make it a contest, letting charlie to feast on the scraps with his speed and evasiveness. If the bears could offer a truck load of cash to lynch from Fitzroy, then my question is why can’t we offer it now to one of the best forwards in the business. Do you want a full list with players like Archie on it , or have one less on the list but have an absolute A grader who will give us 60 or more goals a season. It was ok for the bears then , why is it not now. R the bears/ lions to chicken scared to do it now.

This is peak bigfooty trade thread material right here. Mind boggling

The following years Free Agents / Out Of Contract players always seem better. Give it a year and that list will shrink considerably with re-signings alone. Clubs also seem more willing to move players on a year earlier to get maximum compensation too, potentially seeing it with Crouch now.

Come this time next year and the picking will look just as slim, with the potential 2021 pool looking more appealing.

Grabbing a couple of FAs to finish off our list would be the icing on the cake. Bring in talent for no trade cost, and be able to invest back into the draft. Most our drafted talent last year hasn't had an impact yet, it is like banked talent which allows us to trade away this season.

I think he will get found out up at Gold Coast. Richmond’s system allows somewhat suspect players to appear more solid than what they are. It’s a credit to them really. They have ultimate confidence in backing each other and they make each other look fantastic.
Don’t think he’ll get the same coverage/service whatever you want to call it at GC.

Probably a good move from him to move up there with a couple of premierships before he gets overtaken and finds himself on the vfl consistently.

Interesting that it’s entirely negative responses for a player with 175 games at Richmond playing in his second Gf in 3 years next weekend.

Think we’re getting ahead of ourselves if we don’t think Ellis would be an upgrade on our best 22. Has just turned 26. If he’s available I’d get him now much rather a bird in hand than Hope next years free agency pool falls in our favour. And as a FA we could still trade for a laird or smith as we wouldn’t be giving assets up for Ellis.

Don’t think it’ll happen as we haven’t been mentioned at all in the mix.

I don't mind Ellis as a player personally, but I can't see him fitting into our structure. We improved when our wings became contested ball specialists, which Ellis isn't, so only HBF roles are really open. He might be an upgrade over Witherden currently, which is a good enough reason to recruit someone, but IMO Witherden also had a down year compared to last year so it's not unreasonable to expect a bounce back.

I'd rather a completely dominant midfield over a single KPF personally, so no - Neale isn't good enough if you're setting the metric this high.
correct. i think the point is it doesn't matter how good your forwards are if the ball is not going to their advantage they are left isolated. GWS has a brilliant midfield (when all fit) and their key forwards get some brilliant delivery. Our midfield still has work to do spotting up targets and the forwards we have still have room for improvement reading the play and making realistic leads not just dummy ones hoping the ball goes over their heads into spare room so they can double back on it.

Rumour on Ports board that Laird toured their facilities last week. Imagine the reception he'd get from Crows fans if he made that move. Definitely sounds as though he wants out of the Crows though. Fox Sports linked Brisbane to Smith and not Laird.

From a player inside the AFL system that the Brodie Smith talk has been around for months now and was shocked the media only got wind of it in the last few weeks. Im excited. If we bring Smith in, where will that leave our salary cap? He wouldn't be on the biggest money in the world but still imagine its around the 500k-600k a year mark. In my eyes we back the players we have to grow and get us a flag within two-three years and sign the young guns the money in years to come.
