I think Mitch Robinson's article about wingers gives us a small insight as to why Cutler might not be at the lions next year

Most important thing is that for a player to play wing in our setup there's a skillset there that doesn't necessarily suit Tom. Looks like it's a highly complex position where you have to curb your attacking instincts to an extent.

We've had heaps of success by focusing on player's strengths in the context of what those strengths bring to specific roles the coaches want our players to take on.

It's very possible that Cutler is Both a good player and also not suitable to play the gamestyle Fagan is pursuing.

Much like we get more out of Lyons when the suns delisted him, I can see another club getting much more out of Cutler if we do trade him. I hope people don't spend next year melting down when Cutler has a good season.

The club sees he's talented and obviously wants to wait it out to see if we can find a way for him to contribute to the team, but other teams might be able to provide an environment where Cutler can play the footy he wants to.

It's probably a problem we haven't had in a decade, as the goal has been for a very long time to just keep good players. Might be now that the goal is to keep good players who also project to contribute to the gamestyle we want to play.

Cutler is a talent, he played a bunch of games last year. There are more than 22 spots on a list, and you need genuine depth to be a contender. Cutler falls in this area for us, so despite not getting a look in this year, im not surprised we would want to still keep him.

From his perspective, he might be able to play a different role or be asked to do better things that suits him more in another team where he can breakout a bit. Every possible chance that if he moves on he plays some great footy next year, but that doesn't mean he would play like that with us if he stayed.

We are a systems based team, and some players just dont fit in a system.
I think a mid to late second round draft pick is fair compensation for him. A cpl of early third round picks, maybe.

Cutler is one of the more outside players I've seen, but I don't think that's because he's afraid of the contest, more that he's very much an outside damage type of player.
Thanks for that. 60m kicks sound good as we've just lost one of those with Dave Myers. Fingers crossed we land a beast and keep JD. maybe too much to ask.

People melted down about him not being picked. This is a very optimistic comment lol

Especially with one poster very prone to melts leading the Cutler cheer squad.

Hearing whispers Bundy will be at Hawks if not offered a decentish contract by us.
I hope not. He showed his value late in the season, deserves a year at least maybe 2. The work he has done off the field, helping with the neafl when injured, the work he has done with the indigenous youth and community has been terrific. Valuable club man and deffinate best 22 at his best.

With Cutler we never know
Maybe game style changes, lack of doing what was told or lack of injuries who knows

maybe it was simply he wanted to go home and as such declined contracts. The club then left him in NEAFL and tried other players when injuries happened
From watching NEAFL Games this year I say Basti was probably consistently a class above most of them. He did not get many games either

One thing that is curious with the Cutler is situation is why we haven’t played him off half back given our need for run from the backline. Maybe Cutler refused or maybe the club wanted to give him a chance to develop on the wing.

You're right. It could be any of those things. What it is unlikely to be is because the coach is a ****ing idiot or plays favourites, both of which have been intimated by posters over the course of this year.

I'm frustrated with the Cutler situation. I really feel we are losing one here. The guy can play. We have seen some very good football from him already. Regardless he doesn't fit our plans and I think that has been made pretty clear to him this year. I'm frustrated for him and really hope to see him get a good run somewhere else. Best of luck to you Tom, just don't tear us a new one when we play you next!
He has apparently had a contract offer from us which he hasn't accepted and which is probably lower than what he thinks he might be able to get from a Melbourne club. Fair enough. It's not as if we have no interest in retaining him. To me Cutler has the characteristics that should make him a good AFL player but I sense the club's concern (which I share) is that he has virtually no defensive side to his game. Whether he will get that with a change of club remains to be seen. I don't rate Cutler as highly as some on this board do. Same goes for Lewis Taylor. OK for depth but if we think we can improve on them I'm all for it.

I think the coaching staff has, over the past three years, developed a preference for "outside-in" wingmen. What I mean by this is that we certainly start our wings slightly off the contest and, in general play, we ask them to retain width, particularly for the winger on the fat side of the ground. But we also want them to be able to pick their time to hit in at the contest and win the footy too. We even structured a game style which meant that the game was not played on the wider expanses of the ground but instead played a corridor effectively between the boundary line and the parallel demarcated by the side line of the centre square.

When you squeeze the ground up like that, you want a wingman who is good in the contest. When you look at our wing players late in the year, they are all probably better known for playing close to the contest - Robinson, McCluggage, Berry, Bailey etc. We aren't playing long running, line breaking types in the wide roles. Arguably, that was to our detriment as we became very predictable late in the year. And I think there's a significant risk if we lose Cutler and Taylor (in particular) that we restrict our ability to change our game plan up if what worked in 2019 isn't working in 2020. Perhaps the inclusion of Ah Chee, the development of Cox gives us different looks at outside run. But from a list management perspective, I'd be keen to retain either/or Cutler or Taylor, as I'm not convinced we should go all in on the "skinny side" football model.

Numerous times by the Lions throughout the year. He has obviously had his head somewhere else, makes sense the Lions didn't play him as much.

Read somewhere that there is also personal reasons for wanting to return to Vic...see if I can find the article

It’s a defensive position?

Do you mean Dan Butler from Richmond?

Running into an open goal Butler.
Good ole BT.

LIONS WANT TO DANCE WITH BILLY ELLIOTT
AFL.com.au's Mitch Cleary has reported that Brisbane has emerged as a smokey in the race for Collingwood free agent Jamie Elliott. After finishing second in the home and away season in 2019, the Lions are looking for more firepower to assist their rise for next year. The Lions have joined Melbourne and Hawthorn in the pursuit of Elliott.
