The salary cap seems to be generally working based on this trade/free agency period so far.

It could cost us one of our stars in a few years if we continue on our upward trajectory. That would also mean the salary cap is generally working too.

Swings and roundabouts.

When someone like Joe daniher, who is the quintessential Essendon player of the last 5 years, decides to leave, nobody is safe. That's the modern game sadly.
You can only put up with so much though. The drug saga and injuries. Time for a fresh start.

Nixon literally just makes it up by the way.

Yeah I was thinking this too. We're in a position now to make the clubs around us pay more to keep their players which is fab.

I get viscerally mad when people reference Nixon or post his tweets in here. Beyond him making stuff up there is no justification for giving that pervert attention/oxygen

Re convo 2 pages back:

I was against pick 12 for Charlie. It was 23, then 17, then 12. We just kept upping our offer. He also had zero games taking the best defender, and apart from one finals series, had been fairly patchy accuracy. There were big question marks.

A big, big chunk of it was the unknown factor. We were paying for a player with significant question marks, and if the answer to those questions was "no" we would be losers on the deal. Now, on exposed form, yes, he's absolutely worth it. I don't think that I was wrong at the time suggesting that the unknowns pulled his value down.

If we are looking to consolidate our picks and get up the draft order I'd like to see us do it during the trade period as a third party to another trade if possible. The club facilitating trades has got pretty good return moving up the draft order the last few years, whereas if we wait and do it during the draft we are more likely to pay a steep price.

I think we could very well facilitate the Daniher trade by splitting either pick 5 or 9 (more likely 9) for our pick 16 plus something.

Anybody know if lewi Taylor was at the b&f last night?? Haven’t seen him in any pics of the night so far today !!
If he wasn’t you’d have to say he’s leaving!!

Someone on the Collingwood board claims they have upped their offer to 500k over 3 years for Elliott. In which case he would more likely stay (if it is true).

I do sense that this has been a calculated ploy by his manager to put pressure on Collingwood. If he can drag another few hundred grand out of the club by flying his client to Brisbane it is a pretty good day’s work. Unfortunately for fans, I think this is going to become all too routine - let the player be seen touring another club and rake in the rewards when the original club adds some more dollars or more years.

Would be good to get Elliott but not the end of the world if we don’t.

The unknown is what fans don’t often factor in though. We weren’t trading for Charlie as he was in 2017. We were trading for what we thought he might become over the following 8–10 years. He might have surpassed your expectations and maybe he surpassed the club’s too. But there was enough evidence there to suggest we were getting a potentially special player. He’d done things in games that were incredible. He’d had elite quarters and halves. He’d played a great prelim final. He clearly wasn’t the finished product but I don’t think we were trading for him purely based on what he’d achieved at that point.

I’m not suggesting your logic was flawed. But you were wrong. I was too, in that I always thought pick 18 was “fair” and pick 12 was “slightly overs”. Mind you, I didn’t get bent out of shape by it because the draft is pretty overrated and I still preferred a somewhat known Charlie over the 12th ranked teenager.

It probably worth remembering that had you and I been doing the trading with that mindset, C. Cameron may not have made it on our list. In that sense, the club was proven right, which is the main thing!

Rumour appears to have been started by Ricky Nixon on Twitter to be honest I'd listen to him over half the AFL "journalists" and twitter garbage but I think I am in the minority there.

Nixon gets it right from time to time, he speaks to player managers, he gets it wrong often enough as well. You wouldn't be surprised though if the Pies put in a decent offer . Eddie would be absolutely spewing if we took one of his better players

Might add a bit of extra spice to the Easter Thursday Blockbuster next year.

We can afford swings but not roundabouts. Budgets and stuff.
