Might need to retire "the Hodge role". You cannot replace a legend like that with Grant Birchall or anyone else.

He won't play the same style of game, more that he can impart his experience down there as Hodge did.

Birchall is being underrated on this board, is a gun. If he can get himself fit he would be an influential player.

Dodongo doesn't get the negativity around Birchall. When fit he is a gun and one year won't hurt

It is moreso about the fact that list spots are at an absolute premium to us right now. We have a lot of promising players coming through, and it would be disappointing to cut one of their careers short to get one year out of an injury prone 31 year old who is on the decline.

I don't think we (or anyone else like the Suns) should get get too cute with the Hodge role. It worked because...well we had Hodge himself for the Hodge role.

Birchall would be an odd get, I think we should back ourselves in or at least back the likes of Ah Chee, etc. I suspect Birchall is well beyond the help of even our medical team too.

That said Im not outright against it given the potential benefit/reward a fit Birchall for free would be. But given list spots are tight it would need to be a 1yr only deal on a minimum salary.

I read that carlton have lost interest in Dan Butler and wont be persueing him. I guess thats the Eddie Betts factor. Should we have a crack at him. A plan b if the elliot thing falls thru. At least he is fit player and young enough to be a long term investment. I am getting concerned we have been focusing on players with injury histories.

Don't mind Birchall if we can't get any of the other defensive players that have been linked to us, our defensive group is still very young compared to other areas of the ground and experience will help.

Someone didn't - we were used/played/whatever.

In reality every case would be somewhere between the two.

We are still in the game despite what McClure has said. I for one would like Elliott in our forward line. Either way, Noble & Dom will make the right decision for the club no doubt.

I'm aware and I was suggesting it could be a similar situation for Jamie Elliott who spent part of his childhood in QLD as well and possibly feels a connection to the area.

Charlie spent the best part of his childhood and adolescent years here, whereas Jamie played most of his footy at Euroa so he can't have been here that long. That being said it seems likely he's from somewhere in rural QLD. It is an interesting point to make but I think it wouldn't be a factor at all - more to do with our recent success, injury trackrecord etc.
