Collingwood’s VFL side will step up its preparations for the 2019 season with a practice match against Northern Blues on Sunday.

The weekend’s game will be the first the Magpies have played this year with an integrated team of AFL-listed players.

Coach Jared Rivers says that quickly forming a cohesive team from the two groups who are yet to train much together is the focus of the early scratch matches.

“We’ve got some young kids – first-year draftees – that need time to keep working on their game style and how we play and how they fit into all of that themselves,” Rivers said.

“Trying to bring them together with our VFL-listed players is always hard but that’s the challenge of coaching and the bit I enjoy.”

The longer-term goal for Rivers and his VFL coaching staff is to improve on last season’s elimination final loss to Essendon.

“Our expectation this year is to make sure we win a final,” Rivers said.

“We were a game out of finishing in the top-four last year and that double-chance is really important.

“To lose against Essendon in the first week, it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth with the way we finished off because we felt like we had a decent year.

“This year is about getting better and finding areas we can fine-tune, then hopefully taking that next step.”

Rivers is confident the necessary improvement will come from the core of young players on the Pies’ VFL list.

Rivers notes that Collingwood has become an attractive proposition for players looking to break into the AFL.

A tangible pathway exists from Collingwood’s VFL squad to league football, as evidenced by the recruitment of Marty Hore and Tom Jok to AFL clubs in the off-season.

Campbell Hustwaite has joined from Dandenong Stingrays, whom he captained to last season’s TAC Cup premiership. The midfielder has impressed the VFL coaching staff in his first few months with the club.

“He’s a young kid who’s really keen to make it to the next level,” Rivers said of Hustwaite.

“He’s a really smart kid and he’s clean inside. He’s going to really help our depth in the midfield area.

Hustwaite joins an existing young core of players the club hopes will push it towards its goals in the upcoming season. Rivers also mentioned the likes of Callan Wellings, Sam Ralph, Campbell Lane and Elliot Le Grice as players to watch as the 2019 season approaches.

Sunday’s match against the Blues will begin at at the Holden Centre
