2019 VFL/VFLW season

Liston:

1. Mitch Hibberd
2. Callum Searle
3. Patrick Naish

Fothergill-Round-Mitchell:

1. Jake Riccardi (shoe in, seriously)
2. Marcus Lentini

Don't think they announce 2nd, 3rd etc do they?

Not sure on the make up of the TOTY, but from Essendon and Coburg I expect Heppell, Lentini and Lochie Dickson to be around the mark.

Internchange a collection of the who's who, who didnt make the 18;

Michael Barlow (Weribee) - Marcus Lentini (Coburg) - Josh Newman (Frankston)

NPO is the home of VFL football. Also don't think they'll last beyond week 1, both Werribee and Geelong are better sides than them comfortably. As for other grounds, most of them have been booked by other comps for finals due to the VFL not using them during finals.

I think it's the right move to go back to Suburbia but go with North Port. The home of the VFL.

I agree but the Borough cop 3 home finals for finishing 7th. Massive, massive advantage at this time of the year and the comp loses even more integrity.

VFL not interested in finding who the best team actually is.

Thankfully Willy have avoided the dreaded home final at Port this year (so far).

They have Essendon at NPO next week. But the way we played against the Bees makes it hard.

Come on Willy.

Is that 8 prelims in a row?

Can that be matched in any State League in the country?

Great consistent, stable, stand alone club on a little peninsula away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Melbourne.

Whatever happens on Sunday (Tiges are favourites, rightly so), great respect.

Very proud of Port Melbourne to push the very best team in the league all the way, and even be leading halfway through the last.
Being one down on the bench certainly didn't help matters, but absolutely no excuses and a very fine season from the Borough boys.

Well done Willy.

Totally outclassed in the first quarter, the gulf between full and part timers looked massive and I feared the worst at quarter time.

Just worked our way back, started getting our hands on the ball and winning contests. Defended really well after quarter time. Right in it at 3/4 time and in the end should have won it.

Right behind both Wheeler kicks, the first went straight at the post and was always going to hit it. The second, off the boot going through the middle and I thought it was home.............

Opportunity lost.

Good signs from all of the stand alone sides this season. Port and Willy around the mark as usual, Werribee are certainly on the right road and signs of improvement, if not wins on the board, with Cobug and Frankston.

Ikon Park is in decline unfortunately, under the stands is dingy, dark, cold and uninviting and $8 for a can of beer topped off an unfortunate day.

My VFL 2019 Grand Final video on YouTube - last quarter games scenes and after match celebration. If you watch between 8:00 - 9:50 minutes you]ll see the two incredible posters from Williamstown - great crowd reactions and excitement. Willy were brave and unlucky to not win in the end but what can you do.

Also, did you have permission to video the game? It was broadcast on Channel Seven under broadcast rights.

Interesting decision. Wonder if other clubs will do the same with the likes of Darebin?
Darebin won't do that, they want to be in the AFL their self but with their refusal to welcome males into the club means they wont get an AFL Licence. They wont form an alignment because the AFLW teams have a male branch too.

Paul Amy suggesting that VFL clubs try to push for more 18/19 year olds as a means to push the young talent on VFL lists.

In the same tweet Pa also suggests that VFL lists may be reduced in size. Mind boggles me really.

Discuss

They can push all they like with that with the Reserves and aligned sides, but don't tell the stand-alones what to do.

Winning premierships is what they are about, not pleasing the AFL.

From Herald Sun in regards to VFL list sizes next year. Will directly impact the undrafted kids next year

VFL clubs will have smaller lists but pools of 19-year-old players next year

Smaller lists, a new father-son recruiting rule and development pools of 19-year-old players are among a string of changes coming to the VFL.

Stand-alone clubs can sign 40 players next year, down from 45 in 2019, as well as six over-age players from the NAB League.

By 2021 primary lists will be cut to 38 and by 2022 to 36.

The salary cap will also be reduced from $380,000 next year to $350,000 in 2022.

Within two years clubs will be required to pay at least 90 per cent of the payment ceiling.

The cap for AFL and AFL-aligned clubs will be $150,000 by 2022.

“These measures have been put in place to not only promote consistency across State League competitions but also competitive balance within,’’ a document sent to VFL clubs from the AFL this week stated.

Each clubs’ development squad of six players will have three players who can play only VFL (Category A) and three who can play in the VFL and NAB League (Category B).

At least one 19-year-old player must be selected in the team each week, in addition to the 23rd player.

Clubs can recruit the Category A 19-year-olds from anywhere but the Category B players must come from a region designated to each club (Box Hill Hawks, for example, has been linked with Eastern Ranges).

AFL talent officers will identify the Category B players.

Clubs believe the development squads have been introduced as a way of compensating for the scrapping of the Development League two years ago.

The AFL paper said: “The development list is designed to create a stronger connection between the NAB League and the VFL by ensuring an immediate pathway exists for younger players.’’

The AFL and AFL-aligned clubs could list between 24 and 30 players this year.

But that will come down to 22 next year and 20 by 2022. They will also have development squads.

The proposed changes in primary list sizes for all clubs are designed to be more reflective of the current talent pool that participates in the competition, the revised salary cap that will be in place and in line with the objective to create greater consistency across all State Leagues,’’ the AFL paper said.

All clubs will also be able to rookie list two players classified as NGA and AFL Category B rookies.

And a father-son rule will be introduced next year.

Clubs can list a player whose father played 100 VFL games, including combined tallies (for example, 50 at Box Hill Hawks and 50 at Hawthorn).

“This rule supersedes any zone restrictions that may be in place and the player/s selected under this mechanism must still be factored into the salary cap,’’ the AFL said.

But three clubs spoken to today said there should be more reward for having a father-son listing.

List changes will still be permitted during the season.
