Well after 4 losses in a row, to label this game as a "must win" is massively understating just how important a win against the last placed Williamstown is. Our top 4 chances depend on it and, however unlikely, other teams still have a mathematical chance of taking our finals spot.

We welcome the return of Kodi Jacques and Monique Conti comes back into our midfield to cover the loss of Grace Campbell. We should hold the upper hand in this area with Alana Woodward in good form and Jess Kennedy having her best game for the season last week against the Pies.

Our back 6 did an amazing job against the high scoring Pies. McLaren, Monahan, Makur-Chuot and Davie should be too strong for Willy even with the loss of Rebecca Miller. Lisa Davie is probably one of the lesser known names in the team but her role in the back 6 has been important. Lauren Bailey is named back in defence after spending time in our forward line but it's a role she should be comfortable with after being recruited into the AFLW by the Bulldogs in 2017 as a dashing half back. Sophie Damon must be jumping out of her skin as she comes into the side for her first game of the year after debuting last year against Essendon.

Wlliamstown have also struggled to keep sides to a low scores and our forward line should be far too potent. One striking difference, and this could be due to no alignment with an AFLW team, is the advantage the Richmond side has in height. Frederick and Wakefield at 182cm and 180cm tower over named key backs Whiting and Pederson who are both under 170cm with few other tall options available should the Tiger duo be on song.

Williamstown shouldn't be taken lightly though as they have pushed quality sides in Melb Uni and Collingwood. They had about the same scoring shots as their opponents and only inaccuracy prevented them from getting close to upset wins. Megan Williamson has been a standout for the Seaguls particularly in the last month. The 19 year old former Bendigo Pioneers player was BOG in the corresponding game last year when we went down by 5 goals. She will no doubt feature prominently again for the Gulls and she should come under the attention of AFLW scouts.

I think we should be far too good (if we are switched on) and will come away with a comfortable win, possibly climbing back into the top 4.

This match is likely to be an easy win for the Tigers, who despite dropping four games in a row still have a massively talented and experienced side ready to catapult back into the top four. The Seagulls have had a mostly unsuccessful season, only managing one win from 10 matches so are in dire need of some good news to finish the season. Williamstown have struggled getting points on the board this season, averaging only 19 points per game so will be in for a big test this week against the Tigers who have players like Tayla Stahl and Katie Brennan who can rack up similar tallies alone. While Mo Hope and Sharnie Whiting have been shining lights for the Seagulls this season, the side will need to put up a full field and four quarter performance to have any chance of matching the Tigers.



In fairness it seems Sophie wrote this before teams were announced as Brennan and Hope are missing.

The VFLW Tigers will look to get back on the winners’ list on Sunday when they host Williamstown at the Swinburne Centre at 11.00am.

Following a narrow loss to Collingwood last week, the Tigers will head into the clash confident, after defeating the Seagulls by 49 points in a practice match earlier this year.

Leading the charge will be Monique Conti, who returns for her first VFLW game since the Tigers' Round 5 win over Geelong.

The star midfielder has been formidable in her three appearances in the Yellow and Black this season, averaging 24 disposals and four tackles per game.

Also coming back into Richmond’s line-up is fellow midfielder Kodi Jacques, who continues to impress in her debut season with the Tigers.

Young gun Sophie Damon has been named to play her first game of the year. The Murray Bushrangers product showcased her tenacity and versatility over six Richmond games last season.

Out of the Tigers’ Round 13 side are Grace Campbell, Rebecca Miller and Emma Gunn.

Richmond currently sit in fifth place on the ladder, eight spots above Williamstown who are 13th.

Skipper Jess Kennedy will wear the number zero on her guernsey this week alongside over 1000 captains across Victoria in support of the TAC Towards Zero Round.

VFLW Tigers overpower Seagulls

The VFLW Tigers are back on the winners’ list after an emphatic 48-point win over Williamstown on Sunday at the Swinburne Centre.

The 7.16 (58) to 1.4 (10) victory satisfied the ravenous Tigers, who came into the clash off the back of four straight losses.

Tiger forward Sabrina Frederick got Richmond off to a flying start with an early goal from the forward pocket.

Frederick’s goal spurred the Tigers’ intensity, and they locked the ball inside their forward 50m as they pursued goal after goal.

However, they were left with two goals and 10 behinds at quarter-time as they struggled to translate their opportunities into majors.

Richmond added another goal and two behinds in the second term to extend their lead to 24 points, as the Tigers’ excellent defensive pressure kept Williamstown scoreless for the first half.

The Tigers reappeared refreshed and animated after the half-time break, and booted a flurry of three goals within minutes courtesy of Monique Conti, Maddy Brancatisano and Jenna Colwell.

Conti’s goal was her first in the Yellow and Black, her teammates flocking around her in celebration.

A last-minute goal by Sabrina Frederick wrapped up an exciting third term, establishing a convincing 50-point lead.

It was a quieter final term, with both teams scoring one goal apiece, Williamstown’s sole major of the day.

Bolstered by a late-term goal by Grace Egan, the unwavering Tigers prevailed.

Egan was prolific, racking up a team-high 19 disposals to go with six clearances and five tackles.

Hunter spoke highly of Egan’s performance and her progress at Tigerland.

“It feels like Grace has been part of the program for a while, but she’s still only 19, which is exciting for us,” Hunter said.

“She’s a really long-term player for the footy club, in particular for this program, so we’re really pleased with the way she’s going.”

Conti was a welcome return to the side, dominating the midfield as she collected 18 disposals, two goals and five tackles.

Hunter praised her stellar performance.

“The way she attacks the contest, she’s so quick on the inside, and it was fantastic to see her kick two goals today from the midfield,” Hunter said.

Young gun Sophie Damon also returned for her first game since the 2018 season with a solid performance across half-back.

The VFLW Tigers’ next challenge will be Carlton next Saturday, August 10 at LaTrobe University at 11.00am.
