Confirmed (sadly).

Having had Selwood on my list since I drafted him in 2007 makes me realize I’ve been playing this game for far too long.

Would have been nice to have had him stay on my list for his entire career, alas..

I know the feeling. This is exactly why I want the rules changed to allow teams to retain veterans who aren't going to score well enough to justify the 4th veteran wage through the bidding process. You still have to match all bids so it's not like you're getting him under value. But it'd be nice to be given the chance to retain him on a reasonable wage.

I've been trying to get it changed for years, even when it didn't affect me.

You can bid on rookie players, however you can automatically promote them at the values specified in opening post as long as a bid has not been placed by anybody yet.
You can also place a re-rookie bid in an attempt to retain them on the rookie list for the following year.
