I don't think it's as marginal as you think. Someone that watches for an hour counts as 0.33 viewers on a 3 hour telecast and 0.43 viewers on a 2:20 telecast (which Fox was last night). That might not seem like much, but it's a 30% increase. Huge in context.

On the numbers assembled, that does make some sense.
Admittedly, I wasn't aware the broadcast only went for 2 hrs and 20 min. With game time reduced by some 16 minutes, why would the broadcast time drop by a whopping 40 min? noting there have been pre- and post-game shows for a while now.
Ultimately, it helps, I agree, but with only a 16 min reduction in playing time, I can't agree that that would translate to a 30% increase in ratings.

Who's watching at 2am other than alcoholics and the unemployable?

Should be noted that these are Eastern Standard Time. West coast subtract 3 hours so some games are on at peak on the west coast

No, i'm not saying it would. The 30% was only in reference to someone that watched an hour. But I reckon it would be 10-20%.

Fox's telecast last night was 2:40, The Essendon-Freo game today is 2:50, Adelaide-Sydney is 2:20. So some games will be more affected than others.

one of the benefits of being one of the only leagues still playing. Likewise, the A-league and NRL.

It seems that a few at least noticed -

Seeking some certainty amid the COVID-19 crisis that has wiped out football indefinitely, the AFL, the Seven Network and Fox Sports are exploring a new marginally reduced contract that would run until 2024.

In a series of sensitive talks involving league chief Gillon McLachlan, his chief financial officer Ray Gunston and respective media bosses James Warburton and Patrick Delaney, the AFL is also negotiating a new 2020 rights package dependent on when and if the season resumes.

In marked contrast to the bitter fall-out between the NRL and Nine, Seven and Fox have remained publicly supportive of the AFL and McLachlan's determination to salvage something of the 2020 season.

theres no media reports anywhere of acrimonious relationships between the AFL and its broadcasters recently.

Didnt suggest there was ... equally SevenMedia are in the Courts over $40m:

This week saw the ultimate game of chicken being played by Bauer Media and Pacific Magazines. Rumours had it that Bauer was ghosting Pac Mags over its impending $40m acquisition. Pac Mags took Bauer to court, then told the ASX ‘Everything is fine’. 24 hours later the deadline for the sale was pushed back a month.

Not looking flash in FTA.

1 million 5 city metro. Incredible numbers.

Shame it was the worst game I've ever seen.

Huge numbers

Not sure what people were expecting. The players were back in full training 2 and a half weeks ago

...and 342K on Foxtel 1.617M all up

Must be the highest in several years.....although an asterix as it is a shorter game which inflates the average

and this is something rugby league debaters have never understood. If you compress the game time, the ratings will rise. If they stay high this year, this is going to become the norm.

unless of course compressing the game actually means compressing the game, which means lower scoring, more tackling and endless stoppages .....
