Goldstein was defined as "basketballer" before we drafted him.

Tilthorpe would be a nice addition if he's there and the best bet mids have gone. We're going to need a 200+cm player that can leap for centre square ruck work. We're also going to need someone that can jump & mark to compliment Larkey & Xerri.

Would have thought Comben is in view for that role.

True.

I reckon we're going to have to add another though. I suppose it's less of an issue if Browny re-signs, but we're still going to have to bring in someone for Todd to tutor very soon.

So if we had to choose from Phillips or Holland ? who would you choose ?

There remains a chance that we win the spoon. If Adelaide beats Richmond, very doubtful, or loses narrowly and we get flogged by the Eagles, very likely; we could end up with Pick 1. Here is a list of the last 20 Pick1's.

2000 Nick Reiwoldt
2001 Luke Hodge
2002 Brendon Goddard
2003 Adam Cooney
2004 Brett Deledio
2005 Mark Murphy
2006 Bryce Gibbs
2007 Matthew Kreuzer
2008 Jack Watts
2009 Tom Scully
2010 David Swallow
2011 Jonathon Patton
2012 Lachie Whitfield
2013 Tom Boyd
2014 Paddy McCartin
2015 Jacob Weitering
2016 Andrew McGrath
2017 Cam Rayner
2018 Sam Walsh
2019 Matt Rowell

Based on those names, apart from the ignominy of winning the Wooden Spoon, that is a pretty handy list of players. On balance I think it might be a better list than the Pick 2's for the same period.

Six of them became Club Captains, being Reiwoldt, Hodge, Deledio, Murphy and Swallow, as well as Goddard, who captained *essendon for a year though more through default. McGrath is touted as a future Captain.

Watts, Scully, Patton, Boyd and McCartin have not turned out as well as might have been expected when they were drafted, though Boyd, arguably was the match winner in the 2016 Bulldogs flag. Patton and McCartin have had shocking injury woes, potentially preventing them from showing their true ability.

In my opinion, Rowell is an absolute beauty and it was rotten luck for the Suns to lose him through injury this year. He may also captain his club.

In that time Carlton have had a staggering 5 Number 1 picks, St. Kilda 3, GWS 3, GC 2, Melbourne 2, Brisbane, *essendon, Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Richmond 1 each.

I'm not sure who we should go after as Brown's position has not been finalised. If he stays, key backs (Taz, Walker, McKay) are settled and key forwards (Brown Larkey) are locked in.

If Brown does go I would say we need to go long term as you cannot expect youngsters to hold down key forward positions. Go for the best available midfielders.

Skill level of some of the youngsters has looked terrible this year and so has decision making but it is so hard to judge without being at the ground, but please, no more mid field players who make unforced disposal error after unforced error

I think having brown injured and comben not fit yet has shown we are still short up there. Walker has been tried and while he gives it a go hasn't really worked and he was sent back on sat in the final quarter and maj was also put there for a few games prior and also failed.... Wood isn't a second fwd so maybe even if we keep brown we go for another fwd too... ie one of the three I have mentioned previously... then only go for Logan if and I say if we get a good enough offer to move brown on

Interesting list Horace. Early days for the recent picks but not many Premiership players in that list.

It appears as though the clubs have gotten no better at picking them. I would argue the first five on the list are the best five with only Rowell and Weitering as chances to reach that level.

Shows what a rubbish club Carlton have been. 4 number 1 picks and have never been any good.

Anyone have an idea of who we take with the Melbourne pick? Could Trew or Bruhn slide?
1: WBD: JUH - Matched bid
A given I think.

2: Adel: McDonald/Phillips/Hollands/Grainger-Barass
3: NMFC: McDonald/Phillips/Hollands/Grainger-Barass
4: Haw: McDonald/Phillips/Hollands/Grainger-Barass
5: Syd: McDonald/Phillips/Hollands/Grainger-Barass

Probably likely that these four go next.

6: GC: O'Driscoll/Thilthorpe/Cox/Bruhn
7: Ess: O'Driscoll/Thilthorpe/Cox/Bruhn

It looks as though these 4 are the next level down from the top tier.

8: Syd
Campbell bid at around this point I think

9: Car:O'Driscoll/Thilthorpe/Cox/Bruhn/Perkins
10: NMFC:O'Driscoll/Thilthorpe/Cox/Bruhn/Perkins

It looks as though these 4 are the next level down from the top tier. Added Perkins as a possible at the back end of this group.

So, a choice of one of McDonald/Phillips/Hollands/Grainger-Barass, followed by one of O'Driscoll/Thilthorpe/Cox/Bruhn/Perkins

Watching the U17s All Star match, I'd question whether Thilthorpe will ever be an above average centre-bounce ruckman. Got touched up in the hitouts by Walsh Jr and looked undersized and ineffectual. From what I've seen he's a key forward who moves like a ruckman, which isn't all that appealing for a top-end pick.

Here's a question I don't see asked much. Who do the players in a draft rate as the best? Normally you know when playing in the same team or against someone who the best is, you get a close up view of what they really can do, timing, balance, skills, reading the play etc. Does this align to what the recruiters think? Interesting to correlate the two.

Who do this years draftees rate amongst themselves as the best player?

Well thankfully JUH will go Pick 1, so McDonald/Hollands won't carry that burden

Was there some kind of memorabilia that Carlton put out celebrating the No.1 draft picks?

At a glance at the Horace list, if the best player that year didn’t go at number 1 they still went in the top 10.

Only added an alternative number 1 where the clear best player(s) didn’t go at #1.

Eg Chris Judd has a claim to 2001 #1 but so did Hodge so it’s not like hawks would’ve made a different selection. Ditto Whitfield vs Macrae.

2000 Nick Reiwoldt
2001 Luke Hodge
2002 Brendon Goddard
2003 Adam Cooney
2004 Brett Deledio (Franklin)
2005 Mark Murphy (Pendlebury)
2006 Bryce Gibbs (Selwood)
2007 Matthew Kreuzer (Dangerfield)
2008 Jack Watts (??? No clear standout but it sure as heck ain't Watts)
2009 Tom Scully (Martin – on part with Fyfe)
2010 David Swallow (Gaff)
2011 Jonathon Patton (?? Greene vs Coniglio vs Haynes)
2012 Lachie Whitfield
2013 Tom Boyd (Bontompelli)
2014 Paddy McCartin (Petracca)
2015 Jacob Weitering (Oliver)
2016 Andrew McGrath – too early
2017 Cam Rayner – ditto
2018 Sam Walsh - ditto
2019 Matt Rowell - ditto

Moral: get top 10 picks

Talk about a club completely stuffing up 2 x rebuilds by pulling the trigger too quick.

They were all good footballers, and Kruezer in particular was a gun when he could actually get fit. That bloke could swing matches.

Nic Natanui at number 2 would be the logical pick in the top 10 for 2008. Not a high possession winner, would be over rated in some quarters, but is a media darling. 2 ACL's during his career, have held him back a bit.

Lol that is so embarrassing and so Carlton

I do have some sympathy for Carlton. Not *essendonesque style sympathy mind you, but its not far below. So "sad" really that these two "great at cheating" clubs have had such an horrendous run over recent years.

This doesn't surprise me all that much, even if they're superstars, they're going to the worst teams in the land, hardly likely to be playing finals in their first couple seasons at least
