And really can't see us talking two from the draft... particularly after last night we need to take action and improve now not in two years or so when the draft years kick in...

Rawlings cant take short cuts.

We have some young talent and it’s time to build around them not bring in crap.

You only have to look at sides like Brisbane, draft and only bring in elite talent via trade, not discards.

I agree no shortcuts but that second first rounder needs to be used to bring in an elite current player whether it be pap Cameron although they will want more than one for him or a gun midfielder and then get an elite rfa too and a top 5 via the draft and that's three that will auto put us in a better spot

We’ll take Hollands.

He’ll spend the first three seasons in rehab. Will come good for a year and then quickly return to rehab playing sporadically over the next four years.

Will play 35 games in eight years and never get a clear run.

Huh??
That’s the exact opposite of what I took from last nights game.
We need to build through the draft.

No thanks. Mids with focus on speed and ball use. If we can grab 2 good kids with our and Dees pick just develop them along with Jy, Tarryn and LDU.

The bolded above is never going to be entirely possible. Using Brisbane as an example, they currently have Lincoln McCarthy in their side... Add Josh Walker as another discard they got... And you can probably throw Allen Christenson in there as well.

In their current squad, the following are all discards: Jack Payne, Callum Ah Chee, Grant Birchall & Cam Ellis-Yolman...

A case could even be made for Marcus Adams, Jarryd Lyons, Stefan Martin & Mitch Robinson.

Not everyone is Lachie Neale & Dayne Beams.

That's the type of thinking that got us here and will take us nowhere.

I want to see a 5th flag. Taking as many top 5 picks as we can has to be the goal.

It's not what got us here at all... what got us here is finishing mid table for ten plus years so not getting access to any of the top 5 each year other than LDU and then also not being able to attract any of the bigger names. Now with different mgt and coaches in place we may be able to snare one. We need to fix this half back and distribution from there now.... we aren't that far off once that happens... suddenly include a couple or even 3 good ball users and everything will improve up the ground

People said the same about Joel Selwood.
Look to have some of the same qualities at the same age.

Yeah, they did.

Selwood hadn’t done an ACL though.

It’s an enormous risk.

You either get Johnathon Patton or Ben Brown.

And at a pick inside 5, would take some massive balls to take the gamble.

Pykie what are your thoughts on Thilthorpe in terms of being worthy of going number 1?

Seems to be a lot of talk about Adelaide taking him with the first pick, but that him being a South Australian is a factor in that. Rarely seems that clubs take that into account with top picks however.

From what I've seen on here, seems Ugle-Hagan, Phillips, Hollands, DGB and possibly Campbell would be about the top 5, and Thilthorpe would come in the group after that.

Interested in your thoughts on him, because it would be great for us if Adelaide did take him, potentially leaving us with two of Phillips, Hollands or DGB (depending on what picks we end up with obviously), which would be a great outcome.

He’s a top 2 runner at his sanfl club. Playing well against men last year and this year so far.

Racks up disposals in the ruck or play as a genuine tall forward. Very strong below his knees and a nice set shot.

He’s every bit a number one pick.

Selwood's knee was arguably worse than an ACL at the time.

It was stress fractures and bone damage affecting his cartilage. According to Selwood his surgeons even didn't give him much hope.

I'm not Pykie but I've followed this particular draft class closely over the last 2 years. I have Thilthorpe number 1 overall dismissing the SA factor. Very good with both feet, excellent mark and clean below his knees. He's that proto-typical modern-day ruckmen that is another midfielder around the ground and doesn't at all look out of place playing SANFL seniors against men as a 17 year old.

There's a lot of Grundy/Cox about him, but Thilthorpe is a more dangerous forward than both of them.

Honestly wouldn't complain if Adelaide went Phillips at number 1 (or anyone else) and we managed to pick up Thilthorpe. Let him learn off Goldstein for 1-2 years and then he can replace him when Goldstein's had enough. Alternatively he could start his AFL career as a key forward or even play him off a wing with his excellent fitness base giving us a marking target out of defense.

Really can't lose with Thilthorpe or Phillips if we pick at 2.

Have you seen much of Phillips, other than the all stars game last year? Obviously the kid can footy, is tough, competitive, clean with his hands in close and can genuinely gut run from stoppage to stoppage with inside/outside ability. However, whats his top end pace like? Also, it looks like his kicking is neat rather than penetrating. Attributes wise he seems like a Joel Selwood type, elite at being a footballer, not the fastest, or most dynamically skilled.

How is Basti going?
They have been pretty good with who they have brought in under Fagan.

They have had more hits than misses and haven’t compromised their drafting to do it.

I have no issue with bring in players who you think can improve your squad, but is can’t be at the expense of drafting high end talent, unless the player is elite.

His first 2-3 steps are great and he's agile and clean in the contest. Excellent by hand and good with both feet. His top speed isn't great but he's more of an inside midfielder that manages to find space around the ground to link up due to his good footy IQ. He's a bull in the contest with his tackling pressure which I think really suites the way Shaw wants us to play (defense first).

It's difficult to find a comparison but think Tom Mitchell with a quicker first few steps. He's just a real footballer's footballer.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of focusing on someone's top speed. Cleanliness with the footy and good footy IQ are more what I consider the most important traits to look for in a player. I always say the footy moves quicker than players do.

Could but we could trade pick 2 for Patrick Cripps and would still miss the 8.

I know it's about 1% likely but you throw Cripps into that middle with LDU and jy we have that sorted... then use our other for a gun kid... and then grab an rfa and back on track.... still have our small fwd issue though!
