Devil's Advocate against that - there will be a perception that we will be a bottom side next year.

Whether this is accurate isn't the main concern but I wonder if we can exploit this.

Could we extract a bit of overs on our 2021 pick to ensure more strikes at this year's draft? It'd more or less be a reverse Melbourne trade.

North 2021 R1 for one of:

Hawks 3+21
Swans 4+23
GC 6+25
Carlton 7+26

This assumes we back our intel sufficiently to punt on multiple 2020 first round picks. It also assumes at least 4 list changes. Ideally 5 with the 2nd rounder staying under 30.

Any of those combinations see us with 5 picks inside 30. Albeit in a very murky draft.

Now this is an idea I can get behind.

Don’t trade out next years first rounder for another this year.
It’s the biggest raffle in years and with our injury management, we can’t rely on that.
Take the two picks in the first round.
Even if the dogs get another first rounder it’ll all be eaten up by juh.
How about we trade with the cats for our Melb pick and a 3rd rounder for their two later 1st Rounders.
Trade brown for two first rounders to either the lions or pies is another option.

Trading our 2021 first round pick would go down as the dumbest thing I’ve witnessed as a supporter, and the brad/Joyce set that mark pretty high! Just no chance with the uncertainty of the 2020 draft, the recruiters perception of the strength of next years draft & our likely ladder position (yes we will likely be bottom 4 next year again).

This idea that we are gonna shoot up the ladder when our injuries magically disappear is crazy. It is okay to be on the bottom for a couple years, let’s take this time to get the list primed for genuine flag contention, rather then rush to get back up and then end up back down in a couple years (AGAIN) because we didn’t do it right.

There's no reason to be impatient. We have a handful of good players that will retire within the next two to three seasons but about ten kids we should have very high hopes for. No need to bet the house on black just because Goldstein and Tarrant aren't guaranteed to be playing in 2023.

Goldy is gonna go forever.

It might be worth bearing in mind that, if there was ever a year that allowed a driven kid to outperform older, less professional players at WAFL level it would be this one. No doubt McDonald has spent the lockdown period working on his fitness whereas a few of his counterparts probably rely on club training to get the work in, and so the standard of opposition could well be lower than usual...

I mean no dis to Knightmare, but I'll trust these eyes ahead of anything I see in a stats column.

His analysis seemed to be a bit OTT with the stat numbers.

The AFL is not the WAFL and if that kid thinks he's going to stick his arse out and nudge AFL full backs out of the way so the ball can drop on his chest, then he's in for a rude shock. Based on what I have seen in the clips, I would take Tilthorpe ahead of him all day long.

So who is the priority? Based on what I've seen on this thread, it would seem that most want Hollands as he is a match-winner. Phillips is a good user and is dual-sided (safe pick) and McDonald is an emerging key forward outperforming seniors at WAFL level. By the sounds of this, I'd like Hollands as we need a player like him to complement to other young midfielders. If not, we pick McDonald and then go hard at Caldwell with Melbourne's 1st.

Didn’t he rate Tarryn about pick 30?
That’s enough for me

I wouldn't claim the man had an "organic" feel for the game, but most young analysts don't these days.

I still respect the effort he makes.

If (and I’m still mostly against it) the club feels that Browny isn’t part of our future, I reckon Sydney might be more than interested given they wanted Daniher last year. Could we extract their first (pick 3-4) in exchange for Browny and our 2nd + some additional points?

We had a 3 year deal on the table earlier in the year but that is off the table now, Brown wanted 4 years plus more money, he has a young family so it is in his best interest to get as good a deal as possible with this contract as the next will likely be the retirement package for less money.

The problem is if you intend to recruit someone say like Logan McDonald with pick 2, it is the kind of premier or marquee acquisition you hope to build the side around. To get the most out of it these guys need to be front and centre. We are seeing much better quality development from LDU in a position he is likely to keep playing than we got from LDU, Thomas and others in fringe roles.

Eventually, Brown will get in the way and it will likely compromise one or both of them. We only got the most out of Goldstein when we pushed Hale and then McIntosh out of the way. It is the only way it will work well, just plonking McKay and Durdin in the VFL didn't create magic.

As to what Brown is worth, the AFL media is downplaying his value, which is to be expected. They think an end of first round pick in one of the most compromised drafts ever is fair value for a guy who has consistently been in the top 2-3 full forwards for the last few years prior to our team falling apart this year and is only 27 years of age and could easily play another 5-7 years as he isn't a bash and crash forward.

I don't think Saints are a realistic target, he would be of more value to a side that hopes to contend and doesn't have key forwards, ie Collingwood. Brown doesn't need lace out passing, he just needs the ball to not be 10m over his head when he is on the lead in space. I think he could be the difference between a flag and not a flag to a few clubs who want to contend, that is worth more than an end of first round pick.

I don't think the money should be a huge issue for us, but if the 3 year contract is off the table then perhaps the club is just encouraging him to entertain other offers. It is a surprise a core player is nearing the end of the season and he isn't contracted, especially for a club lean on good quality mature players.

It astounds me that crows supporters believe they will receive pick 2 in compensation for Brad Crouch. On what planet!!!?

It depends on what someone offers him. He is a pretty good midfielder, if Cunners said he can't go on because his back is stuffed I wouldn't mind the club giving him some cash to do the inside work, Simpkin and Anderson aren't going to last as battering rams.

That being said, I do not expect him to be offered enough to trigger pick 2.

If someone came from the future and told me that Goldstein was 36 years old and still one of the best rucks in the country I would not be surprised, well apart from meeting a time traveller which would be a break from the usual.

He's only one player, he might even not be the #1 pick, like I said the general consensus is that 2021 is a very strong top 15 or so.

2020 probably more inline with 2017 at the moment.

So would you trade out a pick that might be Max/Ben King or Rankine for Hunter Clark or Coffield from the previous year?

You absolutely have to consider the relative strengths of each draft.

I think you will find there will be plenty of sides trying to bank picks for next year because of it's strength.

I'm happy to take 2 x top picks into the draft this year. No way should we be going all in with 3 to the detriment of our 2021 position though.

If we genuinely want a third top pick in this draft, we should be trading some senior players for it, not our 2021 position.

It's certainly the rumour, that that's exactly what we're try for Pykie it's going to be interesting!

Hollands looks very good!

Horne is going to bloody special!
