A few interesting features of Ching votes this year:
  • Macrae polled 29 votes but 26 of them were in the first 11 games. Only 3 votes in his last 7 games.
  • Bont was almost the opposite. Only 8 votes in his first 10 games and then 21 votes in his next 8 games.
  • By contrast, Libba (our Ching winner for 2020) was consistently among the votes throughout the season. Didn't play the first two games and only failed to poll a vote in 4 of his 16 games. A worthy winner.
  • Keath garnered all his 13 votes in the first 8 rounds.
  • JJ who has been a prolific vote-getter in the club B&F over the years and polled 8 votes last year could only manage half a vote all season, in Rd 16.
  • Bailey Smith only missed out on Pups votes in one game - the day he suffered a concussion early in the match and took no further part.

CSM History vs Ching History

A few people have asked how closely the Ching reflects the club B&F award each year (the Charles Sutton Medal). Here's a comparison of the top 10 over the last seven seasons. An asterisk beside a players name means in that year he only appeared in that top 10 and not the other.

So generally the Ching is not a bad guide to the CSM. This year all top 10 in the CSM were also in the Ching top 10. Back in 2014 we got all of the first seven in the CSM in the correct order.

Where the CSM winner has finished in the Ching that year:
First - 3 times
Second - once
Third - once
Fifth - twice

Our worst discrepancies were in 2018 when Aaron Naughton finishd 4th in the CSM but only 20th in the Ching, and in 2017 when Suckling finished equal 7th in the CSM and we didn't give him a single vote all season in the Ching. Now that's a real whipping boy!

Also in 2017, we rated McLean third and Dahlhaus fourth and they didn't get into the top 10 of the CSM. But generally we've been fairly close.

The only repeated differences I can see is that we tended to rate Dahlhaus higher than the club did, while in most years the club seems to rate JJ more highly than we do. Hmmmm...
