Even if we don’t have a top 20 pick to match?
Just like the old system. If a team picks a player in your academy you would match with other picks to meet the points value. However if someone picks a player from your academy with a top 20 pick there is no ability to match. This does not apply to players outside of NGA. So northern states keep their academy players as is.

If we've developed and invested in this kid as a part of our nga, the club would feel inclined to trade up if possible and if necessary to pick him. No point doing all the work just for him to star at another club.

Presuming this kid isn’t a top 20 pick then, this is probably good for us as we rarely get any decent academy kids anyway.

If the northern states keep their academy status, they should at least be excluded from bidding on or picking others.

It’s such a big leg up that they Sydney teams especially get.

Yeah it’s definitely a leg up. They got two rippers last year. Add in Heeney and Mills plus a couple of others. We certainly didn’t capitalise from NGA. Dogs got lucky with a number one pick. Collingwood got Quanor who is going to be a gun. And McInnes last year who is pretty highly regarded.

We might get lucky in that rucks tend to slide more often. It's risky to use your first pick on a ruck
