Carruthers is a strange pick, he looks no better than a lot of boys in the draft. This will be an interesting one to watch going forward.

Long range Jake Lloyd replacement. All our defenders come from the rookie draft, it's our MO

Totally agree. Good player but not an overly exciting one. He's a grinding FF, he won't break a game open but he'll give any defender a working over. Shame the SCG dimensions arent bigger, the open spaces would've really suited him.

How do you know he won't break a game open?

I just dont think he's that type. He'll also be dealing with our midfield delivery.

Lets see, he has a great conversion rate so there is definately a possibility he becomes that forward. Hopefully some Buddy stardust rubs off on him.

I'm still on the DGB bandwagon... so i'm a little biased.

I don't think many key forwards do break games open now days. Buddy and Kennedy are the only exceptions. One is a massive unit, the other less so. Both are skilful, and both are strong. We know McDonald has the skills, so he just needs to work on the strength.

I am not as concerned about our midfield delivery as you or others are. IMO we have a number of players who are above average or better at kicking inside 50: Dawson, Heeney, Blakey, McInerney, Rowbottom, Stephens, with Campbell and Gulden now added to that. I'd even argue Hewett is also a pretty lovely kick when he's in space. That's enough there for McDonald to work with and develop alongside. Certainly more than Reid had in his early years, or Buddy had when he moved to the Swans.

I hope my source is wrong , but just said with us picking up MacDonald it's less likely to get Paddy. We didn't expect to get MacDonald when we did.
You can't have too many good players. I still suspect McDonald would play more as a CHF hence McCartin would still be the FF. I would love to see Buddy playing higher up the field. Even as far as the wing. His kicking disposal is elite.

The midfield delivery comment is a well worn one no doubt. We have drafted well the last few years but i still dont think we're a clean ball using team. It'll come though.

The best a new and under strength KPF can hope for is clean delivery, it keeps him out of wrestling matches and helps build his confidence and trust.

With a fit Buddy and the bravery to take the corridor on we could really be in for a big jump up the table.

p.s Hewett is criminally underrated. Our problem is we can't make up our mind what type of midfielder we want him to be. He can do it all. Personally, i think he should drop the weights a bit and get a little more dynamic. Would like to see him show his footskills off. He was drafted as dual sided, i want to see more of that.

I think McDonald is going to be an adequate, reliable tall forward at AFL level for us rather than a great one. Good hands, a high conversion rate with his set shot, but isn't going to do much for us that isn't well delivered to him is my uneducated initial impression. So it's a high price for the pick really.
We've added a nice piece, but not a game breaking talent.
Although tbf his endurance indicates he'll be well suited to run up and back all day that Horse (and modern coaching) often demands of forwards so perhaps that will set him apart as adding extra value in today's game - and not something that comes out in highlight tapes the likes of me is evaluating talent on.

But yeah, much rather him than Daniher on an expensive deal.
What I like about him from my limited viewing is that he knows how to use his body in a marking contest. It is damn near impossible to take contested marks these days in the forward line because defenders are so good at pushing players off their run or blocking them. A player like Brown got found out this year because he was one dimensional with his leading up but hopeless with his bodywork. Tom Macartin is also great with his body postiioning which makes him a great contested mark. Hopefully with Rampe teaching Macdonald a few tricks he will develop into a dangerous forward. If not, we can always hope he learns how to bring the ball to ground ala Tommy Mac in his early days. :)

You can only draft what is served up to you. Each year it is different. Many posters here think Florent was a bad pick. But go back and look at the whole draft and the depth after Florent was not that good. Hard to pick 18 year olds and project.

I think we are just giving up on ruckmen in general, like a divorced father who has just given up on ever finding love again.
Kinnear said on exposed form (ie none in Victoria) it is hard to see who to draft. He thinks they are out there but if they are not playing he cannot see who to take. I think we will pick someone up in the mid season draft after Vic kids get some games.

Terribly disappointed with our trade period but redeemed ourselves with the draft.

Campbell looks ready for rd 1, carries himself as a senior player and those kicks are what dreams are made of. Loading up on him for rising star
We got our ruck and traded to make sure we had the points needed to rebuff any early bids on our academy players. We then got the draft picks we wanted. What's not to like about that ? Campbell's a great player, as is Campbell. We also got a few more potentials.

We'd have wasted our cash chasing a big name even if we could afford them and even if they wanted to play for a team that's not ready to challenge for a flag. When our young list is ready for a tilt at a flag and we have the likes of Buddy off contract then we can buy some big names.
