IF
the Swans want to hold Pick 4 + take Campbell & Gulden ....

THEN
forget about trading in quality players this year using draft picks as currency. Quality out for quality in is the only option.
*, you look like you could write for AFL.com.au!

I think Lings injuries have shown why we picked him imo. Has showed amazing perseverance thoughtout his injuries and has shown that he has the work ethic to continue improving.

I have no doubt that even if he is delisted he will find a way to get back on a afl list. Has been trained to do the small defensive roll well and if he can integrate his run and ball use (which has gone missing) he'll get back on a list.

His defensive work really is seriously good. Had Fox & Cunningham not been doing such a great job, I have no doubt Ling would be getting games right now. His closing speed on his opponents is elite and he can stay in the contest longer than his opponents too.

I hope we retain him purely for that reason. Fox & Cunningham have really impressed but it can't hurt to have too many guys capable in that role, given how much we've missed it since Smooch's retirement.

Yeah, I’m a slightly less s**t version of Barrett.

I don't know what it is, but something about Barrett's nothingburger of a face reminds me of that scene in Toy Story 3 when they put Mr Potato Head's body parts on a tortilla.

I reckon players like Thurlow etc have trade value..

We need list spots and points, so to get p60 (146 points) for a player that isn't that valuable to us is better than delisting - which we'll be doing a lot of.
even p70 (39 points) is better than delisting and getting zero points to create a list spot

True, we desperately need points.

But every club will be cutting hard & the market for B-graders is going to be very, very limited.

Aliir is probably of some interest if we shop him around. But Thurlow, Ronke, Foot - can’t see anyone giving up anything for them.

yep you're probably right.. trading Ronke and Foot is a stretch.. bummer because I like those two. Im hoping Thurlow has a big game on Sunday, then theres a slight chance of a trade??? Agree on Allir.
Interesting trade period coming up

Our fringe players will not be traded purely because nobody will want them. Like us, every team is trying to improve their list and if there are fewer spots on a list next year then nobody will be importing rejects from other clubs.
And, in addition, we need to get it into our heads now that none of our players - NONE - will be worth what we think they are worth in a trade. As soon as we understand that, the less chance of group apoplexy when it happens.

Completely agree. with reduced lists who will want to trade in fringe players in a bottom 4 club, unless they are young with significant upside. Thurlow plays a role but is no game changer. I've seen a little to suggest that players like Ronke, Fox (though has been v solid) etc will be targeted. All of that said, if the club is planning to delist a player like Ronke, perhaps we may be better trading with another club for draft picks, but again i can't imagine he is on anyones radar.
If we can nab a KPF, ie Daniher and a specialist ruckmen we'll be well placed to play finals.
It feels like the coaching staff are unsure how to use Allir and he really hasnt reached the heights of 2016 before he got injured in a prelim. I feel like he is devoid of confidence and it has been difficult for him to get any continuity in his game as he has played so many roles this year. Given that the backline looks so steady, do we feel like his future is a swingman/2nd ruckman?

In most phantom drafts that year, Ling wasn't expected to be selected until late second round.
The one we really missed out on was Zac Bailey from the Lions who was taken straight after Ling. He is an excellent player, can play off HB, wing and push forward to kick goals as demonstrated the other night. Bailey is exactly what Beatson would've been hoping Ling would become (by now). In Ling's draft highlights package, he looked to have a good turn of pace with silky disposal, especially by foot. All his injuries would've curbed his development and possibly his speed, hence the move to transform him into a shutdown small. Hope he stays so he can get a good go at a career with us.

His draft highlights package did make Ling look good, and I was keen on him after we drafted him, but obviously that's the point of his highlights package. With regards to his injury, I don't know how bad it was, but I know one mate he had a similar foot injury and because of the damage to the bones and tendons around it, they basically had to freshly break a bunch of bones in his foot and then rearrange them in the correct way. Which took a long time to heal, if Ling is coming back from something like that, then a lockdown small might be the most we get out of him. Apparently he was working with Nick Smith and McVeigh, so he has good teachers, and he did look good in the games he played. I hope we get him and let him develop in that role.

Aye. Arguably we did well from the Jones and Hanners deals tho some felt we were giving away the silverware.

Our error has been in bringing in c+ players, none of whom are worth the dosh we pay them. Mind you I was happy about Sam Grey... more fool me.

I have feeling we may split pick 4 for draft points.

I feel like we could split for more than just points. Maybe points and a player like Constable. If we could get 15, 16, and Constable for Pick 4 for example, I'd do that in a heartbeat.

If we can keep pick 4 in a way that avoids a first round deficit next year, then that would probably be preferable, but Pick 4 could allow us to get a lot of pieces that we need.

I really hope we don't. Getting Gulden would be great, but he is not worth robbing ourselves of the chance to get a gun prospect in a position of greater need with that pick 4.

This. Two top 5-6 prospects are better than getting Gulden personally. If we can get all 3, all well and good. If I have to choose getting just two, I know which option I'm choosing and it's not close

True it can get us Phillips, or Hollands.

Both suit our side massively.
