I believe only the standard rookie contract. In case of Holman anything about standard rookie contract is part of salary cap.
I’m guessing you mean “apart from the standard...”.

Yes, that’s correct. We (the Lions) do that as well. Move contracted players to the rookie list, where the rookie contract value of their total contract isn’t counted towards the tpp.

Frees up about $280k under the tpp, if you have four players on the Cat A rookie list.

Anyone listen to Craig Cameron’s Road to the Draft Podcast?

So CC says we're in line to make a big push in the free agency market this year. Who do we chase? Brad Crouch? Zac Williams? Jeremy Cameron? Joe Daniher?

I know there has been talk of Zac Williams on this sub forum before and he would certainly be a handy replacement for the ageing Harbs who is 32 next month. Crouch is the most obvious target with how things played out late last year but I doubt we'd chase key forwards like Cameron or Daniher. I think we're going to push ahead with Ben King as our spearhead in the forward line with the hope that Lukosius eventually finds his way into the forward 50 as well.

I think a readymade full back is not out of the question too.
Lewis Melican, Ryan Garthwaite etc..
Definitely not glamorous but if Thompson is not up to AFL I think we need a big dour defender. At least until Graham is a real AFL player.

Unless we trade some mids I hope we don’t get Brad Crouch he would be surplus to our needs now. Collins definitely needs help until the likes of Lukosius and Ballard can play more of a lockdown role.

With the potential list cuts at seasons end, it may be a case of creating list quality over quantity.

Off load several players unlikely to become regular best 22 for whatever reason, and replace with 1 or 2 A graders that will definitely be best 22 every week.

I don’t think there’s any way I hell the AFLPA and AFL Will be able to agree to 35 players as of next year - they’ll drop something like 2 players a year for the next few years to achieve the number.

Makes a lot of sense... If they were to drop to 35 players for all clubs next year they put 16 of our players out of work

Think it depends entirely on the money the AFL can provide for the salary cap.
I'm not sure how much say the AFLPA will have on list numbers?

Depending on what is decided over the next few months, this year could be an unprecedented trades period for both contracted and out of contract players.
A real opportunity for our club if they can use it to our advantage.

Contract law overrides AFL CBA so it is impossible for us to have a list of 35 without having to pay contracted players out in full.

I think we are probably in the worst position of all the club's to take advantage of reduced list numbers as we have contracted more than the rest of the league based on the recent concessions given.

Teams like North who only have 22 contracted and plenty of cap space will be able to acquire AFL proven depth whereas we will have to continue to have AFL sub-standard depth given players like Murdoch are contracted for future years.

Most clubs have 46 players max. I’m pretty sure Brisbane with 47, and Suns with 51, are the two teams with more than 46 players.

So most clubs be delisting 11 players.

I believe this is the key.

It’s been widely speculated that the player salary cap will drop from ~$13m to ~10m for next season.

That will be near impossible for many clubs to achieve with current player contracts.

So unless contracted players agree to a percentage reduction to their current contracts, I don’t see how some clubs can manage to meet the salary cap.

As someone mentioned earlier on another thread, Contract Law over-rides the AFL and AFLPA....but if there's not enough money available to honour those Contracts, what's the go then......

A very unexciting suggestion would be someone like Nathan Broad who is from Richmond and OOC. 27 years old, 192cm medium defender. Especially if others are moved on at the end of the year. Would be around people he knows as well with Ellis and Miles being at the club as well.

If lists are reduced, especially if it’s a significant reduction, there should be a couple of genuine, fringe top 30 on list quality, players available.

Nor would I be surprised if clubs come offering decent players with genuine leadership qualities for your second round pick.

I heard Dayne Zorko for our second rounder. Ticks all the boxes.

Hello Coast fans, please excuse the intrusion.

A bit of discussion starting about the possibility of bringing Will Brodie back to Victoria. What's been keeping him on the fringe up there? ...and what's he worth to you?

I noticed some discussion about defenders in previous posts here as well. We have a number of medium defenders at the moment who I'd rather not part with. If we did though, I'd say it would be Marty Gleeson. Would that make it easier to move Luko forward?

Is Gleeson injury free?
Can he play on small forwards?

He was good before all those injuries. Strikes me as pretty borderline player to have on a 35 person list. A 25 year old who isn't really best 22.

I don't think Lukosius is playing in defence because we need 3rd tall defenders. More-so that it will allow him to get hands on the ball, have some influence on the game and build some confidence. When our midfield gets a bit more competitive I think we'll see him go forward.

Ideally we need a decent key back as only one of Ballard or Luko would ideally play on the 3rd tall and when Luko is ready he will be going as the 2nd or high half forward / 3rd tall.
