Size, speed, ball winning and skills. This is why I want Carroll more than any other realistically available prospect in this draft. A McCluggage-type on each wing would make us very difficult to stop going forward.

Looks like a left footer too which would be handy

Reckon we have a few options on our list for utility types. I'd be happy to keep drafting away at some good mids. Looking at our list 3 years time, Zorko, Rich and Robbo likely gone, Neale and Lyons in their twilight years. 3 years time is when the likes of players draft last year and this year should start really kicking on.

It will be interesting to see if we can move our way up the draft over the trade period coming up next week, would love to somehow get high enough to grab Tanner Bruhn or Will Phillips.

AFL Draft Central have released a profile of our academy prospect Blake Coleman.

Sounds a bit like Liam Ryan in that write up.

STRENGTHS:

  • Explosive speed/agility
  • Clean hands
  • High marking
  • Footy IQ
  • Forward craft
  • Defensive pressure
IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Endurance
  • Consistent output
Some really good strengths. Even with improvements section it should be ironed out in an AFL environment. A few pre-seasons, his endurnace will improve which will then help with his output as he will be getting to more contests.

With Skinner and Eagles being delisted we might very well look at another tall in this draft. If we keep one or even two of our late firsts we might look at Nik Cox? Basically a father/son selection anyways with his father playing a handfull if games at Fitzroy and the Bears. Born to be a Brisbane Lion?

Oh god, sounds like Schache Mk 2.

If Daniher comes in, I don’t believe we’re short on KPD, KPF or Ruck.

I believe Fullarton and Payne have a future at the club. After these two I believe we should be looking for a young developing ruck, or ruck forward.

We have Andrews, Gardiner, Adams, and Payne who can play on genuine KPF’s. Lester and Brock Smith who can play on third tall sized forwards.

Agree.

I think a fit Daniher will top off our forward line and with Payne showing plenty when played this season our backline is set except for a hard to come by running defender.

Still need mids, lets hope your favourite Dev Robertson steps up as a missing mid piece next season along with Cockatoo fwd/mid.

True, our spine is pretty set for a few years at least with decent cover. But it's also about making sure your reserves side can structure up effectively most weeks. This avoids players being asked to fill roles they will never be selected for in the senior side. For example, if Payne replaces Lester in our defense next year and Adams continues to sit on the sidelines it leaves guys like Hinge, Smith and Lester lining up on the opposition key forwards. Swing Ballenden back and Fullerton becomes the lone tall in the forward line. Sure it's okay for a couple of weeks here and there but it doesn't give those guys being forced to play key defensive roles or crash packs up forward the best opportunity to develop or impress.

As I replied to Briztoon the Reserves side needs to be fairly balanced as well. We are likely to bring in Cockatoo, Coleman Jnr and possibly another young mid via trade or draft. Needs to be balanced with another tall and perhaps a ruck if Steph retires as well.

With list sizes being cut I wonder how likely we are to be able field an all AFL listed reserves team in 2021, with 22 plus 1-2 emergencies needed for seniors that wont leave much room to move to field 22 in the reserves let alone if/when we have injuries, will need top ups from somewhere.

Guess I look at the U19 academy kids to fill such roles.

We’re going to need 2 or 3 at a bare minimum, most weeks with a healthy list.

I imagine academy tall defender Jack Briskey, might be one, as he was one of six academy kids who got to train with the senior squad during the preseason.

edit: Jason mp.

Hoping Robertson gets a good run next year. at very least we'll see him in the reserves side. ditto Ely Smith

Get an exemption to play Will Ashcroft a year early:D;), he's 2022 draft isn't he? Do we know yet how highly he is rated in that draft pool?

Supposed to be another strong draft. Both ‘21 and ‘22.

But hard to tell this far out, how highly he’s rated.

Made the AA U15 school boys side as a 14 and 15 year old. Captained Vic in the competition as a 15 year old.

Not sure where he sits amongst the over all pool. If I had to guess, at this stage he’s considered a first round talent.

Ashcroft is very good, plays in the Trent Cotchin mould.

I'm sure academy kids can help a bit, but we would still be a tall or two short, especially if Steph retires as well. You have to keep some degree of balance with the list to help players develop.

A highly rated F/s / academy mid would be a nice for a change.

If Steph retires, I’d hope the club looks to bring in a young ruck or ruck forward. Either via the draft or trade.

I have felt at times, our reserves forward line was a little to tall.

I don’t have an issue if our reserves are a little light on for tall forwards, as we can easily play one tall, with a fleet of smalls.

And it’s not like most opponents will be loaded with talls. I’m pretty sure, for the last two years, we’ve possibly had more talls on our list than most other clubs, particularly at either end. Some clubs are loaded with young rucks, where as we’ve been loaded with KPP’s.

Cockatoo will be playing behind the ball to start with or at least trialled there - think Ah Chee. heard from someone in the club. also expect him to announce his wish to seek a fresh start soon... but he loves geelong. not sure, but he isn't 100 per cent coming from the way it was told. but very confident. apparently hasn't looked after himself and is a few kegs too heavy.
