I was looking through draft thread "smythes-draft-watch-2020" and found the same. Connor Stone and Bailey Laurie were in that 20s to 40s range. Looks like we are doing due diligence across a bunch that are likely to be there.

Seriously anyone outside the top 10 or 12 kids could go anywhere.

If Laurie was 6 to 8 centimetres taller, he’d be up there with Finlay Macrae as one of the better ball using mids in the draft.

As we saw with Dev Robertson, even kids rated in the top 10 or 12 can slide.

So briztoon, any sense of what we are after with our picks (or pick if we offload one of them)? In recent years it has been pretty clear given the gaps in our list, this year less so. A mid? A winger? Assuming we take Blake Coleman, maybe a ruck?

No idea.

I believe both Noble and Conole have both mentioned about still improving the depth of our midfield.

After that, I have no idea what we might be targeting.

If we are genuinely looking at one or both of Connor Stone or Bailey Laurie, I question whether we do draft Blake Coleman.

They’re both highly skilled players, and probably start as half forward and small forward. Neither have Coleman’s speed or leap.

Coleman will be a Lion short of an extremely early bid.

Coleman's already been given a personalised pre-season training regime from the club alongside the rest of the playing list to get started on. He's definitely coming. Not sure anything short of a top-10 bid could change that.

So then the question is, are we only making one more pick?

Assuming we keep Lester, we only have the space to take one more pick at this stage (and that requires moving someone from the senior list to the rookie list).

EDIT: presuming the rumoured drop to 38 primary list spots goes ahead.

I still can’t believe there has been no official word on list sizes yet and/or the new TPP.

That list is either from early in the season, or should be disregarded entirely. Logan McDonald isn't the 26th best player, he's going to be a top 2 pick.

As for Laurie, all I really know is he's a pressure forward who's good in traffic and can eventually play on the wing. I don't see any incompatibility drafting him and Coleman both, because we could use more than one of that type of player.

I think Laurie is similar to Jack Higgins, in that ideally he’d play as a balanced mid, outside the contest. But due to his height he’s been pushed to play small forward. And he plays for Oakleigh, who has the strongest midfield in midfield the NAB League, which limits his opportunities to play through there.

Last year the club said before the draft that we did want to have more than the minimum 3 live picks.

This meant some squad members not being contracted before the draft, and being re-selected via the rookie draft.

National Draft:
22. Deven Robertson (Perth/Western Australia) | 184cm | 81kg | Inside Midfielder
33. Brock Smith (Gippsland Power/Vic Country) | 189cm | 82kg | Tall Defender
37. Keidean Coleman (Brisbane Lions Academy) | 183cm | 75kg | Medium Defender
59. Jaxon Prior (West Perth/Western Australia) | 189cm | 82kg | Tall Defender

Rookie Draft:
12. Sam Skinner (Brisbane Lions)
26. Corey Lyons (Brisbane Lions)
34. Archie Smith (Brisbane Lions)

Of course list sizes and player trades out (Cox likely to be traded; but possibly could be another), will determine how many live picks we have.

But similar to last year, it would not surprise me if a player like Lester is not contracted prior to the draft, in order to enable an extra pick. He could then be picked up via the rookie draft, unless another club takes him which would be unlikely.

Unless we do something with our first 2 picks; we probably do need to plan for 4 selections:
2 first round selections;
Pick to match Coleman;
Fullarton upgrade.

In this small highlights package I can't see similarities to Higgins.

That is one hell of an impressive highlight reel, his disposal was the most impressive part for me, can kick off both feet, is cool under pressure, picked out the correct target each time and kicked it to their advantage, plays on instinct which is a terrific trait to have. Nippy and evasive around the contest as well.

Higgins top age year in the TAC cup.

Played mostly midfield, and stints in the forward 50.

Played pretty similar to me.

Gets to AFL level, and he gets pigeonholed as a small forward.
