Interesting discussion on the trade radio - how often does giving up two first rounders work. This was around getting in a player for two first. On analysis a lot you wouldn't do again. We are in a slightly different position as our picks are both late picks and if we can sneak into the top 8 it may well be worth it.

Depends on where your squad is at as well. If your the Crows or North you need bulk talent coming in. If you're a team like us where you won't have many changes to the best 22-26 then you mainly need role players (through trade and draft) or some absolute guns to break into the team

Worked pretty well for us!

Heath Chapman is my man this year. Think this kid is going to be amazing. Has everything you want in a young bloke. Think he could start as a intercepting 3rd tall defender but transition to the midfield or wing. Mark my words, he will be a 200 gamer.
With Witherden going out, I’ve been giving Chapman a lot of thought.

The player he would naturally replace would be Gardiner.

I’m not convinced he could go through the midfield, but could play wing.

Chapman is a nice prospect. Good size and good attributes. Wouldn’t be against selecting him. But he isn’t one of my first choices either. Mostly due to the below.

I too doubt whether he can make the transition to the midfield and feel he’s always going to be better suited down back. I think we have some nice options down there at the moment and have more pressing needs.

If you had one pick at 17 with your expectation how the draft would unfold who would you pick and why?

In order of preference, of who might realistically still be there.
1. Eddie Ford
2. Finlay Macrae
*Day Light*
3. Heath Chapman
*Day Light*
4. Max Heath
5. Shannon Neale

Will finish post later tonight.

We don't have any areas of desperate need and have reasonable depth across the board. Accordingly we are in a position where we can just take the best available regardless of position and that is what I would advocate. There is usually a faller because of risks, positional need ahead of the pick or a number other reasons. I just sit and take the faller when they come to us and not look back.

Is Eddie that Fyfe type that's a bit rough around the edges?

Excuse the uninvited response but as a realistic/maybe available target in that range I'd like to snag one of Eddie Ford, Archie Perkins of Jack Carroll.

Nathan O'Ddriscoll could slip that far but unlikely.

Nah, no such thing as uninvited. These are just the guys that follow the draft the most closely off the top of my head and I'd like their opinion. Is N'OD an Oliver type? He looks it.

Yeah, with the ability to play outside as well a bit as well. But definitely needs to work on his kicking.

Yes. Not so much rough around the edges. More didn’t show much consistency last year, and wasn’t in the best shape early on. His best looks very good. He just needs to play at that level much more regularly.

If the pick was 12 would you pick him?

Do we draft a young ruck and develop for 2-4 years?
Or see where Archie is next year and trade a young ruck from elsewhere that done 2-3 years?
I see Fullarton as more a forward who can ruck and same as Ballenden.

At 12.
Nathan O’Driscoll
Archie Perkins
Eddie Ford
Finlay Macrae

I flip flop between Perkins and Ford.

I’m pretty confident Ford will become a full time midfielder, or play the majority of his time in the midfield if he reaches his potential.

Perkins I would like to have seen play midfield this year. It won’t be his tank that holds him back though. I’ve seen Perkins compared to Ziebell as the type player he is.

Going off their bottom age year, Perkins was the more dedicated and professional player.

If you look at the majority of draft watchers top 20 or 25 lists from the end of last year and compare to now, there’s not a lot of changes in their top 15.

Logan McDonald is the one player who’s shot up to the top two or three spots.

A little shuffling amongst names otherwise.

Lachlan Jones (PA nga) and Heath Chapman have gone from early 20’s to being rated as early teens.

It’s really in the 15 to 30 bracket where we’ve seen some SA and WA kids “bolt” in to lists and conversations.

By and large, these kids have jumped in ahead of Vic kids who had question about their consistency and/or production as bottom agers, or had questions about whether the Vic kids could play in the midfield full time, or had a more advanced contested game.

But these are the same questions the SA and WA kids who have jumped up boards, had on them as bottom aged kids.

They just got to play this year, after basically having an extended, 8 month preseason. So draft watchers have moved kids like Poulter, Powell, Carroll and Cook in to their top 20 or 25.

Had Vic kids like Ford, Macrae, Maher, and Berry got to play and shown hoped for improvement, they’d all possibly be in top 15 or 20 discussions, one or two possibly in top 10 discussion.

I think we are past that best available mantra and are in a position to try and fill needs rather than stack the best talent we can. I’m looking for the final pieces that can help push us further into premiership contention and set us up for a sustained crack.

I’m looking at midfielders that can win the ball. I think we got really exposed in that Geelong game. They were always a nightmare match up for us.

Tom Powell
Jack Carroll

They are two names I’d be hoping are available at our picks.

I think we still need another quality mid but doubt we would pass on a player if we really rated them, regardless of need.

I'd be going for the 2 best plug n play mid fielders.
It would be hard to find a draftee, at our current picks, more ready to play than what Deven Robertson was this year.

Most likely any kid we draft, will spend most of, if not all of next season playing reserve’s football.

Where do you rate Tom Powell amongst; Finlay Macrae, Sam Berry and Zane Trew?

I know Macrae is a different type of mid to the other three, but figured he offers us something different than our other young mids.

I actually think Macrae is exactly the type of mid we need. He would be the perfect type to play on the wing opposite Hugh. But that’s a pipe dream as I can’t see us being able to trade up to acquire.

By how I see them adapting and progressing at the next level

I like what Berry potentially brings to the table at AFL level and I think he becomes the best overall out of the players mentioned above. If we get him, could well be the best Berry on our list.

Certainly a hard draft to call with limited exposure this year and as such, clubs have very different rankings. Should make things interesting come draft night.

I would love Chapman, But with our current picks I cant see him still being available.

What range do YOU have F Macrae going ??? from all the phantom drafts, and reading I have done his draft range seems to be the most open.

I have no idea of his genuine draft range.

Personally, if you take out all the club tied kids, I would have him in the 10 to 15 range.
