So what is our history of bidding on other teams' Academy/Father-sons? I don't recall us doing this?

We bidded on Charlie Cameron's brother

I believe the past participle of "bid" is actually "baded" ;)

I understand the idea that tap rucks particularly can be hit and miss (especially when considering taps to advantage)... And some times you can get a gem from the state leagues... But still, the best rucks in the league can make a huge difference, they generally go on a list in their draft year, and I don't mind having a list spot pretty much permanently tied up in our recruiter's speccy pick for the next All Australian ruckman. From where I sit, much as I love Oscar, he isn't an A-grade ruck, and generally most state league rucks brought in only end up as stopgaps...

I'm not saying a speculative top 10 pick, but if we spend pick 25 on one, I don't think it'd be the end of the world if it turned into a bust.

A grade rucks don't seem to necessarily mean GF success eg. Gawn/Nic Nat/Grundy. Richmond/Geelong seem to do OK without an elite/AA ruck.

As long as your ruck can just about break even and give a good contest that is all you need to be competitive all the way up to and including winning Grand Finals. IMO Oscar is plenty good enough to be a premiership ruckman, in the same league as premiership ruckman like Vardy, Nankervis, Lycett, and IIRC the Bulldogs didn't even have a recognised ruck in the 2016 flag team.

GWS lacking a decent ruck has really hurt them over the last few years. Recent history has shown that you do not need an elite ruck but you do need someone who can do the job. McInerney I think can do the job and despite being 26 is still improving. Behind Oscar though things are very thin. Smith is lower tier adn there is no-one after that. As things stand if Oscar goes down for an extended period at any time over the next couple of years it could literally cost us a premiership. With talent available this year for cheap I am not sure why we would not bring in a good prospect who can provide cover in a year or two and potentially develop into an elite player.

Having an elite ruck might not be needed to win a premiership but it certainly does not hurt and I suggest would make things a lot easier.

Don't need A grade ruckman, Oscar was our most improved player this year and is more than adequate. What we need is another adequate back up.

The trouble is someone like a Max Heath or Shannon Neale is not going to be at the level to cover for an injury to Oscar and/or Archie in the early stages of their careers while we are well and truly in the window. IMO Tom Fullarton would be a better option than those 2 for 2021-23.

I agree with Brizzys Squizzy , we just need a competitive back up ruck for a few years, someone like Shaun Grigg;).

I think the modern game is all about having a serviceable ruck. The last thing you want to do is pay overs for a ruck, even if they're good enough to earn the coin. The reality is their position is nowhere near as valuable as a KPF or gun mid.

eg. Brodie Grundy.

JAKE BOWEY
POS: Midfielder
Ht 175cm, Wt 67kg, DOB 23/5/02
From Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro

Bowey is one of the better kicks in the draft, with his pinpoint passing and brilliant skills putting him into the frame as a second-round selection. The Sandringham Dragons small can be used on a wing or in attack, and he is a smart player. Bowey's size will count against him for some clubs but he packs some punch with his key attributes. Is the son of former Saints cult hero Brett Bowey.

If not him? If Jack Carroll was there at this pick the Lions would take a very strong look at the West Australian. Don't be surprised if this selection is a little left-field.

BRISBANE
Picks: 25, 53, 58, 69, 70, 93 (likely to use three or four selections)
Brisbane's plans for later in the draft will be dependent on how early a bid for Blake Coleman comes. The Lions could still shift their picks back down the order and match with later picks if a bid comes early, while they have been offering deals to land a future first-round pick as well. They are likely to list Carter Michael, another Academy product with speed and a booming long kick, while they have shown an interest in adding to their ruck stocks, with Henry Walsh, the younger brother of Carlton's Sam, on the radar. Hard-running country prospect Harry Sharp is another who may be in contention late, while mature-aged half-back Mitch Duval might be in the mix to help fill the departures of Alex Witherden and Mitch Hinge.

Interesting that Cal's word is we are likely to use three or four selections. Perhaps of even more interest is that we have been offering deals to land another future first-round pick.

Not sure how we have the currency to net another first round pick (unless we give up our one). Unless we offer up pick 25 and our thirds to someone that needs points next year (Collingwood?).
Yeah I am guessing we are targeting Collingwood's considering they are unlikely to need it next year but I'm sure they'll get better offers. Unless we have discussed trading our own 1st rounder as part of the deal. I'd happily trade our 1st rounder next year and swap it with the Pies with more going their way(e.g. our pick 25 if we expect a bid for Coleman before). I'd back us to finish higher than the Pies next year and it would be a very fun death ride with two oppositions clubs 1st rounders next year.

Would Bowey be similar to Zac Fisher?

Apparently he’s a better version of what Zorko was in he’s younger years

I reckon Cal Twomey's spiel reads like Caleb Daniel.

Interesting that we're looking to match Carter Michael as well, and looking at Walsh. Probably rules us out of a ruckman at 25 if it's a live pick.

I'm glad the club is focused on what looks to be a better draft, but geez I'd be salty if Jack Carroll made it to the pick we traded Melbourne. I think he's a fantastic prospect, worthy of a top 10 pick, and it sounds like the club like him a lot too.

Looking at Michael must depend on how we rate our defence looking at Andrews Payne and Gardiner as our talls with Rich Answerth and Starz as our small to medium defenders clubs can always use cover
