It seems strange, at this stage if the Crows do not have to list a nominate NGA, then they are either picking Borlase with pick 40, or they're hoping he'll slide to the rookie draft where they'll CatB him.

If we're looking like having deep picks for our remaining slots, I'd love to see us take Borlase. Not only is it nice for FS reasons, but it'd also leave the Crows a man down if they were hoping for a slide to CatB.

Hayes is a possibility to fill the Dixon void, though given what Ollie said about his ruck craft that would seem a massive waste
Ladhams will fill that void. Like Charlie he gets to lots of contests, gets his hands on the ball enough but drops lots of contested marks. Charlie happens to take about 3 contested marks a game to Ladhams 1, but they both drop a lot of marks and bloody Charlie dropped a few uncontested marks in the 2 finals games.

Once you pass, that's it. They can't then pick.
This is not the case any more.
They shouldn't pass at 40 though, either take Borlase, another player, or trade it out. If there's someone they really want to take at 40, they won't be able to match a Borlase bid and Port could take him late in the ND.

Just thinking on the Borlase situation.

By the time we match Jones we will only have picks at the very end of the draft.

If the Crows only want to use 4 picks and have already passed at 40 can they still match? Or are all of their picks post 40 forfeited when they pass?

And if it is late enough that the points value is zero, do they even need a pick to match?

P.s. they would still have list spots regardless, it just looks like they are planning on saving some for the pre season or mid-season drafts and hoping to get Borlase and Newchurch as Cat B, effectively getting 2 extra lost spots

The crows have 32+3+0 = 35 on their list at the moment. Max on main list is 38. Max on rookie A list is 6.

Above I posted they have traded out 56 and 63 leaves them with 1,9,22,23 and 40 (and 80)

Adelaide
Current contracted for 2021: 35

The Crows will sign delisted Brisbane defender Mitch Hinge on Thursday taking them to 36 list spots for next season. And Jackson Hately's arrival via the Pre-Season Draft will make it 37. David Mackay and Ben Davis will be dropped from the senior list to the rookie list to provide flexibility, while Bryce Gibbs will also be carried as a rookie for administrative purposes after he received a payout for 2021. Once listed, Gibbs will be able to be moved to the inactive list, meaning the Crows can add a player via the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP).

So they potentially have
Main 32 -Mackay - Davis + 5 draft picks + Hinge + Hately = 37
Rookie 3 + Mackay + Davis + Gibbs = 6

So they have room to put Borlase on to the main list as 38th player or onto NGA rookie list if no one bids for him.

Pick 56 onward is a free hit to match a bid, and picks in 50 -55 range means they go in deficit next year between max 76 pts and min 10 pts.

Gold Coast moved Jack Hombsch to their rookie list. Another player on my list of 'I didn't know he was still listed!'

Not quite, I think. Currently draftguru shows Adelaide with 33 +3 - this includes Hinge and Hately. But it doesn’t include Gibbs.

So when they move McKay and Davis they will have 31 on the main list and will have committed to the max of 6 rookies (current 3 Davis, McKay, Gibbs). So they will only have 5 main list spots, not 6. They have 4 picks inside 23 and #40.

In any event, even if I’m out by 1, they can’t match bids on both New church and Borlase.

I suspect they may combine 22 & 23 to trade up and get themselves an extra pick after #40 to match bids.

Far be it for me to try and correct you REH but max list size (not including Cat B) is 42.

With 6 cat A rookies the max on the main list is 36.

The Crows have 32 on the main list

-3 (Mackay, Davis, Gibbs) = 29

+2 (Hately and Hinge) = 31

They have 5 spaces left that they must use at the ND (1,9,22,23 and 40) and 2 possible cat B spots.

Or they could possibly forgo 40 at the ND, elevate a rookie and have one extra pick at the RD.

I interpreted rookies to mean A or B but rereading this I think you are correct.

The minimum list size for each club will be 37, which can be made up by as little as 36 senior listed players and one rookie.

To reach 44, clubs can carry 36-38 senior listed players, four-to-six Category A rookies and two Category B rookies.

Gold Coast moved Jack Hombsch to their rookie list. Another player on my list of 'I didn't know he was still listed!'

sadly was never the same after that prelim concussion

Yeah the Crows last pick will be #40, they'll either take Borlase there, or they're hoping he doesn't get selected and they'll CAT B rookie list him after the draft.

The only other alternative is that they decide to trade #40 out at some stage during the draft, and leave themselves with a late pick they could use.

A LATE rule tweak will see Gold Coast place gun Academy draftees Alex Davies and Joel Jeffrey on their primary list when they join the Suns next month.

The club has access to the talented pair under Academy rules, with the list concessions given to the club last year allowing them to automatically pre-list the players before the NAB AFL Draft and without having to match bids for them.

Under last year's rules the Academy pick-ups were able to go straight onto the club's rookie list, as was the case with NAB AFL Rising Star nominee Connor Budarick last year, who was tipped as a top-30 pick but was listed as a rookie because of the pre-selections.

But the AFL last week clarified that this year Davies and Jeffrey, who are both considered first-round talents, would need to be listed on the club's primary list of 38.

The wording of the article is confusing but I assume Brodie Lake is available in the main draft. I like Lake.

With the list size reductions, has there been any talk of further reductions the following years(s)? Although the reductions for 2021 are much less drastic than was first being talked about, there was speculation that there would be further reductions in future - I haven't heard any more talk about that so far, but it still seems possible given that the 2021 reductions aren't as bad as first feared. Maybe the AFL only losing $100 million means she's all good :thumbsu:
