To be honest our 3 picks in the 60's only have a combined value of 229pts currently which isn't much and equivalent to pick 54.

Obviously if Reef receives an early bid, we match and we're still in possession of our 1st round selections then the points value of these picks will become irrelevant.

If a bid comes after our 1st round selections then you would expect those picks to have come in and be a little more valuable but even then matching a bid at pick 20 would cost 729pts (after 20% discount) and still far more than we'd have available without pick 23 in the mix.

If we were to do a deal with Adelaide involving picks 14/16 for 9/23 then it's seems pretty obvious we'd only do so if Cox or Reid were still available and I expect we fully hope to trade our future 1st for another 1st round live selection this draft.

Do that and we could look to use 23 to gain more points and while yes this would mean using it to match a bid I don't think that's the end of the world, it's market value for Reef, it would stop us going into deficit when every point might be needed for Daicos and it would stop us eating up all those picks in the 60's which by the time they can be used are likely to be 10 to 15 spots higher.
Assuming that Sydney and port both have to match bids before us, our picks should jump up about 10 places and leave us with roughly 661 points, which is only just shy of what we’d need for a bid at 20. A less than 100 point deficit is no big deal. We should absolutely be looking to use those late pick to match a bid. The draft will finish at about 45-50 as it is anyway, so there’s no real benefit to keeping those late picks since our even later picks will just come in to that point anyway.

17. Collingwood
Nik Cox (tall defender/forward)
Northern Knights/Montmorency FC/Ivanhoe Grammar, 200cm, 87kg

The Pies have signalled a need to bolster their tall stocks and it is widely expected they will take a key position player with one of their two selections in this range. It wouldn't shock if Cox went as early as one of Essendon's early picks but if not he should slide and appears likely to be snapped up by the Magpies.

19. Collingwood

Conor Stone (medium forward/defender)
Oakleigh Chargers/St Kevin's College, 189cm, 83kg

Stone is versatile and renowned for his ball use and decision making. The Giants have shown some interest too but the Pies are keen with rivals expecting them to pounce here. Collingwood's selections will be a big watch this space on draft night given the machinations of a potential bid on McInnes and a possible trade up. Collingwood had been linked with a bid on Brisbane academy forward Blake Coleman but that increasingly looks unlikely at this still early stage of the draft.

20. Collingwood (matching bid from Richmond)
Reef McInnes (tall midfielder/defender)
Oakleigh Chargers/Surrey Park FC/Scotch College, 193cm, 86kg

This would be a terrific result for Collingwood after a wretched off-season. The Crows, Bombers and perhaps the Kangaroos loom as threats earlier in the first round but if they don't pounce McInnes could slide through the teens and land after the Magpies' first two selections. There is also talk the Tigers could bid on Swans academy small Errol Gulden here. The Tigers have also been linked to Laurie, but it would also be no surprise if Richmond looked to trade out their selection here, with clubs including Geelong and West Coast both looking to trade into the first round according to industry sources. Rivals have indicated the Cats could bid on Connor Downie, while Luke Pedlar is another player in whom they've shown interest.

Holy shit that would be a dream outcome if we weren’t able to trade up the order!

I’m subscribing to the Age after this. 😂👏🏼

Few nuggets still though!

- 40 odd live picks
- the aim is 4-5 picks inside 40
- recent trade period setting us up for FA

How much of it comes to pass remains to be seen, but we’ll be busy trade wise by the sounds of it.

I quite like the fact that we’ve got more spots open than every other team. If Hine is right about only 40 odd live picks it means we could hopefully build some future depth by using what will effectively be multiple mid 3rd round selections instead of picks in the 70s.

It also underscores for me that this strategy would have been potentially amazing if we had received genuine value from our trades instead of the eff all we ended up with.

That be a Dream Draft for us

Looking at that latest phantom only strengthens my hope we use our future 1st to gain another top 20 pick this year.

If we haven't already moved up and secured a tall in Cox or Reid then I'd be tempted to take the punt and go early with Callow.

Coming away from another draft without a genuine kpp prospect would be pretty disheartening IMO.

Listening to Hine, getting an additional first round pick seems to be on the cards. Hine mentioning that we have been in discussions with other clubs, so l would figure we match a bid on McInnes, then have the additional picks in the first round. Whether the club can get it done is another question.

My understanding is if he gets bid on a first round selection and we go into deficit, points are supposed to come off next year's first round selection, but what happens if we've already traded it?

Good summary Dave.

As much as it seemed like he didn’t say anything I actually thought he gave away more than usual.

- Later picks (outside of first round) to be more needs basis. A diversion from previous drafts. Needs to be assessed after first round picks in the books.

- probably only 40 odd live picks, we are hoping for 4 in top 40.

- May not take all 6 picks will be assessed on the night.

- Interesting that he mentioned watching SA kids and the Qld academy players. I get the feeling we may look at Powell, Baldwin from SA and look to bid on Coleman and the Suns academy kid (can’t recall his name Stepho like traits).

- Will look to improve draft position; dialogue with other clubs re: pick swaps.

- trade period a result of long term planning to get into this draft which we like and ability to attack future FAs.

- It also sounded like he was taking Reef down a bit too, ie: no exposure this year, injury history etc. Mentioned him probably starting as a back before moving into mid.

I’m sure there was more but that’s all I can recall off the top of my head.

Suns academy players that they want are pre-listed. We can’t bid on them.

The points come off our first available selection I believe.

I'd much rather Macrae slide into the hands of our future 1st than Richmond if Twomey ends up being right.

He seems very much the type who could have shot up the draft board if football was played in Victoria this year.

Where do we sign off on those draft picks??

Can still bid of those not nominated. Not sure if they have the option to match or not? Don't think they have the list spots anyway
Yes but the player he was referring to is their best academy prospect.
