Not sure who has more to lose tonight.

Jen2310 if we don't match an early bid on Reef or manicpie if McDonald goes to any team other than Adelaide.:p

I'd be seriously considering putting a court protection order on both of their TV's and perhaps even have a security presence around them both from 7pm for safety, as they would potentially be at significant risk of bodily harm being inflicted upon their person, especially Jen's TV if we don't match on a Reef bid.

Powell is going much earlier than 21.

Essendon, Adelaide and North Melbourne will all consider him. He's not dropping past North Melbourne. Luff from all reports loves him.

Otherwise about as good as any attempt at a phantom.
Apologies if you have already answered this, but do you get much info from the clubs, especially Collingwood?

Anything you can share?

I personally loved hearing that from Perkins. The industry is childish when it comes to this sort of stuff. We often get players playing the straight bat so we ask them to give more then when they do, in this case particularly, we question whether it’s draft tampering...

For me it was both a red flag and a sign of high emotional intelligence. A red flag because he’s been in the elite pathway for a couple of years so should have prepared himself for the possibility he needs to move interstate. High emotional intelligence to understand he isn’t ready.

I think someone prepared to be so radically transparent is exactly what our group needs, but I would understand if we now steered clear. Good on him regardless!

Assuming Cox or Reid don't make it through, but we survive an early bid for Reef, I hope it plays out like this

Macrae/Bruhn
Perkins/Stone
Trade with Richmond, Stone/Poulter
Reef match

Two of Callow, Ford, one of the ruck/forwards (Neale, Walsh) late

Should I just not watch the draft and save on disappointment?!

Two ways we could look at it.

We are due some luck or the pain will continue due to overall bad management.

Four picks inside the top 40 is very achievable. We would only need to have a Reef bid after our two first rounders, we match with our four late picks and then trade our 2021 first for a 2020 second and 2021 second, take a player, that’s four.

We could also trade a future second for another 2021 second (maybe GWS pick 26 which will end up in the early 30's?) after matching the bid on Reef and keep our powder dry on that future first for now?

Personally, I hope what Perkins said today has no effect on interstate clubs and their picks. I understand that it will, but it sets a dangerous precedent that players will start saying that, next year it’ll be a WA kid who will slide. Imagine if MacDonald can say that and ends up at West Coast for pick 14. Obviously it benefits Victorian clubs given the majority of players come from our state, but it’s a national competition, they clearly know that, if you’re not prepared for a move interstate maybe VFL is the best option for you.

On the flip side as someone who generally stays away from the draft, what sort of player is he, if it works in our favour does he at least address needs or would it be a case of a best available player who fits into one of our many undersized midfielders?

The thing is, in interviews, clubs are going to ask that question. They'd be silly not to. It's going to be leaked to the press. We can't expect the kid to lie at either point - the club interview or the press. And clubs are going to factor in the likelihood of the kid flourishing interstate. I personally think they'll weigh other factors higher in terms of likelihood to prosper interstate.

You're using the word "best" very loosely there.

Eseendon have already traded out their future 2nd and 4th round picks, so you can forget about getting any later round picks from them now as they have basically nothing else of value to trade (pick 44 is not a useful piece even with all of the bid matches).

We shouldn't be trying to get pick 8 as the asking price is too high without something else coming back in return - normally deals like this end up being 2 x 1st round picks for 1 x first and 1 x 2nd round pick.
Something needs to be done as it’s looking like a reef bid will come before Our picks. If we do nothing we will end up with reef and a late first rounder. If we did a deal for pick 8 and 44 we would end up with pick 8 and reef. I think we’re snookered. Might be able to get 7 instead?

Absolutely, clubs would have to ask it or it would be negligent. But it’s one thing knowing it behind closed doors and the player saying it on national radio.

Using Adelaide and GWS as an example this year, both are at different stages but currently have trouble keeping players. Imagine trying to sell this pick to your members when they already know he doesn’t want to be there

I wouldn't assume that he's making an accurate assessment of whether or not he will flourish in a different environment. If it is an accurate assessment, it'd be a red flag, as it suggests fragility. But either way, the comment takes a fair bit of courage, so it's both a red and green flag for me.

I don't think there's that urgency to be honest as Essendon are unlikely to bid and we can match any bid for Reef from Adelaide's pick 9 (11) onwards straight up with pick 14, which also immediately frees us up to trade back into the first round again (eg. go after GWS pick 13) with our future first if that's what we want to do.

I suspect there's more to this Perkins story than meets the eye, perhaps something being kept under wraps on the family front?

Here's my trade for Collingwood

Collingwood Pick 14 & 16 and 2021 1st Round Pick for Essendon Pick 7, 8 and 2021 3rd Round Pick.

No chance that Dodoro would go for that, as the Bombers would be after a KPP + a midfielder from that first group and the top end midfielders will likely all be gone by pick 16 (which will end up being pick 17 or 18 after bid matches).

If Thilthorpe somehow slipped to Essendon and they in all their giddyness at snaring him decided that two picks towards the back end of the first round this year and a mid-first round pick in 2021 would be better for them than two of the higher rated prospects at pick 7/8 this year then I'd entertain making that move for pick 7 and 8 with a view to nabbing Reid (who would be a massive get for us), on the proviso that they don't bid on Reef with pick 14 (16/17).

We could then look to flip pick 8 (9) quickly to GWS in a deal for pick 13 (15/16) and 15 (17/18) in exchange for pick 8(9) and the Bulldogs future 2nd (maybe their 2021 3rd coming back our way)..

This would end up playing out as follows:

OUT

2020 pick 14 (17)
2020 pick 16 (19)
2021 Collingwood 1st round pick
2021 Bulldogs 2nd round pick

IN

2020 pick 7 (8) - Reid
2020 pick 13 (15/16) - Bruhn, Macrae, etc
2020 pick 15 (17/18) - Perkins, Cook, Stone, etc
Reef bid match from pick 21 onwards
(maybe 2021 GWS 3rd round)

As I said initially there's no way Dodoro goes for this so it would likely fall over at the first hurdle (he'd likely counter with 14 + 16 + 2021 first for pick 8), but if he somehow does then it could turn out to be a real positive for us and we'd be insulated against bids on Reef with Adelaide and North unlikely to bid with the prospects still on the board at picks 10/11 and 11/12. The issue around points to match a bid for Nick Daicos could be looked at next year, but we'd still end up with five first round-quality talents over 2020-2021.

The catch on all of this is Reid being there, if he isn't there for us at pick 7(8) then there isn't anyone else I'd want to move up to grab those picks from Essendon for.

Edit: no point sending Essendon's 2021 3rd round pick as a kicker as GWS could just do pick 8(9) and their 2021 3rd for GWS picks 13 and 15 directly so the kicker has been changed to Bulldogs 2nd with a later round 2021 3rd round pick coming back our way).

That would be relatively fair, which means there’s no chance Dodo would accept it.

My thinking is that Dodoro is extremely risk adverse and I think they'll take Perkins. I think that he would be more likely to downgrade still get a players of similar quality and if the picks go astray then he can excuse the poor pick by saying he got a good deal. Also with the later pick they could pick Finlay Macrae who they could use to get Dunkley with another try next year.

We could trade 14-16 to bombers for 8-44-77. Since we’re probably paying overs we could ask them to trade 14 back to us for our future first so we don’t risk losing it on a reef bid. So we would end up with 8-14-reef then3 late picks

I'd do it if I was Collingwood and thought a Reef bid was likely. Essendon might do it too as it sounds like it's pretty hard to seperate a large enough batch from that range until about 20- take a kpp with their first pick and then a couple more players with our picks (might even get the same ones they would have picked at 7 and 8). plus banking a 2021 first - with the potential of being a really valuable one.
