We could trade 14-16 to bombers for 8-44-77. Since we’re probably paying overs we could ask them to trade 14 back to us for our future first so we don’t risk losing it on a reef bid. So we would end up with 8-14-reef then3 late picks

It's definitely overs to start with (no point even bothering introducing 77 so it's just 8 and 44).

In any case we can't do that sort of deal now that the AFL have closed the loophole around two clubs cooperating via trades to enable one of them to side-step using a higher pick to match a bid, after Sydney used a strategy of trading second round picks out and then back in with West Coast so that they could match the bid on Blakey in the with their later picks back in the 2018 draft.

I'd do it if I was Collingwood and thought a Reef bid was likely. Essendon might do it too as it sounds like it's pretty hard to seperate a large enough batch from that range until about 20- take a kpp with their first pick and then a couple more players with our picks (might even get the same ones they would have picked at 7 and 8). plus banking a 2021 first - with the potential of being a really valuable one.
Essendon have 2 later NGA players to match bids on so they wouldn’t do it.

I personally loved hearing that from Perkins. The industry is childish when it comes to this sort of stuff. We often get players playing the straight bat so we ask them to give more then when they do, in this case particularly, we question whether it’s draft tampering...

For me it was both a red flag and a sign of high emotional intelligence. A red flag because he’s been in the elite pathway for a couple of years so should have prepared himself for the possibility he needs to move interstate. High emotional intelligence to understand he isn’t ready.

I think someone prepared to be so radically transparent is exactly what our group needs, but I would understand if we now steered clear. Good on him regardless!
Don’t get me wrong, I have no issues with what he said, and as an industry we need more honesty not poor lies which is what we normally get.

I’m just not sure there’s enough protection from the AFL for the clubs who can least afford to take the risk. From a business stand point it’s already a bad/risky investment, you’re paying the same price for something you already know there’s a higher chance you’ll be selling low in 12-24 months time. Where’s the incentive to take the risk for the clubs who need it the most? If it becomes a trend it’ll need to be addressed imo

Definitely agree re the industry regardless of motivation of what caused our shambolic trade period, nothing highlighted it more than that

Why does that matter? That trade doesn't cost them academy points or result in them taking an extra player. Or are they almost certain to trade one of those top 3 picks for future picks as they don't have the list spots to take all 3 and their academy kids?

Apologies if you have already answered this, but do you get much info from the clubs, especially Collingwood?

Anything you can share?

I like to be more draft analyst than news reporter but I do have a small number of connections and in the 24-48 hours before in the draft in particular I find there is a lot more consistency in the messaging I'm getting.

I don't have a dedicated Collingwood contact.

The talk around Collingwood though is they're exploring trade opportunities and seeing if there is a suitable way to move up. But they're not going to force the issue if it's not the right deal has been the suggestion and they'll take their picks and get the best combination they can.

I wouldn't assume that he's making an accurate assessment of whether or not he will flourish in a different environment. If it is an accurate assessment, it'd be a red flag, as it suggests fragility. But either way, the comment takes a fair bit of courage, so it's both a red and green flag for me.

I think you have to. These kids undertake media training so he knew the impact of his words and he’s living his own life so second guessing that gets you nowhere. Also if you don’t feel he’s capable of making an accurate assessment of his own feelings and maturity then how can you have any faith he’ll thrive in a cut throat professional sporting environment? On this you just need to have faith.

Yeah we don't want to just do a Stupid Trade just for the Sake of it

I just don't think that many of us know how we're going to react to future situations or have particularly accurate views of ourselves. I wouldn't put too much faith in this comment, nor would I put faith in McDonald saying that he's going to be a one club player - no matter how genuine I thought they were being. When JDG made his claim to selfless loyalty - "I'll never let you down." I do think he was being honest and genuine, but it wasn't really an accurate assessment of where he was at, and I wouldn't assume that other kids assessments of themselves and their futures are likely to be significantly more accurate. They're kids - most of them with limited life experience.

He wasn’t talking about future scenarios though. He was talking on his preparedness to move interstate in the here and now. In a post COVID world I think it’s pretty unlikely he’s making decisions in a vacuum so I’m not going to speculate the way you have. Especially when it comes to his career and the biggest day of his life to this point.

Fortunately we don't have to speculate and our speculation doesn't matter, as there's a fair chance that we'll get it wrong. Interstate clubs will be speculating though, as they have to. It's going to be interesting to see how low he slips and if an interstate club takes him. I reckon some might share my view of not trusting the accuracy of his statement and be willing to back in their club to make him happy and backing in that his statement is probably just one of the many things that we all get wrong.
