After his performance in the trade period, I wouldn't be surprised if Matt Rendell has told the whole world whom sits where on our draft board. Or has he possibly signed some sort of non-disclosure?

Rendell was let go at the start of the year wasn’t he? I doubt he’d really know anything about where our current draft board sits....

And I’d be staggered if he hadn’t signed an NDA in his employment contract.

His NDA was probably back-ended so he’s making the most of it now before it kicks in

Of course it is possible for everyone to do worse. The 50 kids selected this year will be a different 50 that would have been selected if they'd all played footy this year. Some kids would have risen into the top 50 from out of it and some would have dropped out of the 50. I'd be backing the theoretical 50 with more exposed form over the 50 that will be picked with less exposed form.

I don't think all clubs will do worse, some might get a steal but there will be a heap of luck involved. Ultimately all clubs will be picking with less exposed form, so all of them should have a bit less confidence in their picks than normal, because there is less data to support the selection.

Basically, it's that little bit more of a crap shoot than usual, so you'd expect a higher percentage of busts.

No, clubs are in competition with each other. If every club picked garbage kids, but the better clubs picked slightly less garbage ones, then that club will come out ahead. It literally makes no sense in a competition for every club to suffer.

There will be winners and losers.

Wasn't Rendell the one white parent dude when he was with the Crows? I have noticed his name a lot in news feeds lately, him and Bec (i want to be famous) Judd.

Yeah let go at the start of the year but you'd have to think he'd have a pretty good knowledge on how we rank the Victorian kids.

I feel like I heard him hold back once or twice on air (believe it or not) which made me think maybe he has signed an agreement.

I only really heard him talk about NGA prospects and the upper echelon.

To wrap up the BF Phantom Draft I picked Taj Schofield mainly because I think it's a bit silly he wasn't picked in the ND. A little smaller than I'd like at 178/179 but has terrific skills and athleticism and honestly could be that Caleb Daniel

The others I would consider:

Carter Michael / Tahj Abberley (Brisbane Academy)

Both are expected to be available given the Lions have to deal with Blake Coleman's bid. Michael has a penetrating kick coming off half-back, a good size and some nice upside. Wouldn't mind giving him a list spot late on, and came really close to picking him over Angwin. Abberley is like that Schofield size, and pretty consistent across the board. I'd like him to take a bit more risks with his kicking, but has some nice traits and his work by hand is sensational.

Patrick Walker (Tasmania Devils)

An outside midfielder who does have that heavily-outside flaw, but he has nice skills, a good developing size in the late 180s, and can play anywhere on the field - wing, half-back, half-forward - and I think if we could add some mongrel to him, he would be a good pick. Has some good potential to play inside and did play a game there for North Hobart this year.

Charlie Byrne (Murray Bushrangers)

One of my personal favourites, I just couldn't pick him because we have his area - 181/2cm defenders - pretty stocked. I compare him to a cheap Lachie Ash in the sense he has the traits minus the elite athleticism, but his reading of the play and penetrating kick is impressive - he's a lefty though. Could develop him into a winger, but I'd want him to be another 5-6cm to play him in that role personally. But one I hope gets drafted.

Josh Clarke (Eastern Ranges)

Similar to Walker in the sense he is very outside, and probably more so in the sense he runs off half-back or along the wing. Elite speed but much like Byrne, being that smaller type, I'd like him to be a little taller to develop him into that stronger winger who could head inside.

Mitch Duval/James Rowe (SANFL)

Obviously a couple of mature-agers who can make an immediate impact. Rowe is that elite small forward who has had question marks over his size and defensive pressure but his reading off the forward stoppages is better than anyone's, and honestly that trait he'd be up there with the best in the AFL. It's just ironing out the other areas. Duval would be a neat inclusion and readymade, but again a defender who we are stocked in.

Henry Walsh (Geelong Falcons)

As the only ruck on the board left worth taking, I did consider him, he's a mongrel with his aggression, just quite slow and still has to work on his contested stuff. His ruck work and ground level work is good, he is a player though that will need development and we would hope to have a good ruck coach to back him. Think he would work well with Grundy as they have similar game styles at stoppages, but naturally Grundy would slaughter him around the ground easily.

They were the names left on my list. A few others who could be around the mark, but these are the ones worth considering.

How open does this draft become given the lack of field time the draftees have had. Also will it put them 12 months behind previous draftees given our Covid year.

It is. Nick hasn't played Metro because like Josh, his 16s year he was purely kept at school. Should be good to go for Oakleigh/Metro next season when not at school.

Pie 4 Life it was interesting watching your work in the phantom. I think you did well but to me it illustrates how poor our draft hand is and how vulnerable we are if Reef gets bid on early. It makes me angry to think on what we gave up and yet still haven't improved our draft position. I think we need to do something with next years 1st to better position ourselves. How would you look to improve our draft hand if you were in Neds position?

I don't understand how that would help us.
All Adelaide could offer us is pick 9 and likely a future second rounder and some later picks, for our 16 and future first rounder.
If Essendon bid for McInness with their pick 6,7 or 8, we would have to match with our next available pick -which would be #9.
We lose our future first for no additional gain. We might as well stay where we are and use pick #14 to match an Essendon bid.
We end up with McInness and a first rounder at pick 16 -plus keep our next year's first rounder.
The only way we could short circuit Essendon's bid is to get a pick ahead of theirs (picks 1 to 5). I can't see that happening.

I think it’s a must to try and get a top 10 pick. Even if we have to do a deal with the Bombers and then have a handshake not to bid Reef. We will lock in a KPP at the very least. If it means we have to take Reef with our second pick and end up with an extra R2 pick so be it.

Potentially we could cash in say 14 + 2021 R1 for 8. Or if they were being particularly difficult swap a R2 for their R3 next year or something. Though perfect getting another pick in the 20s or early 30s would be good.

So heading in with say 8, 16, 25-35. I think if we can convince the Bombers not to bid we will be safe from a Reef bid before 16. Grab a Reid/Cox then best available with 16 (maybe Chapman or a Cook/Ford, maybe make a bid on an Academy player), then match Reef with that third pick.

Worst case is we still get a bid before 16 for Reef, we match and then pick a Callow or if there’s a slider with the next pick and still walk away with two KPP and Reef.

I really want GC’s pick 5 though more likely they will trade 27 (as they only need one pick). We could certainly get DGB if we get that. Imagine if we could get DGB and Chapman to combine the WA KPDs then match Reef.

Brisbane and a promise not to bid on Coleman. They might be keen for that as they have that mid 20s and some valuable points matching.

I’m more than happy to say to Essendon though and say “okay take him, we will move up to 9 and get the kid you would normally pick”. That could be a Bruhn, Perkins or a tall.

McInnes is a great talent with high upside but he’s not a Nick Daicos who you’d move heaven and earth for. Would I like him? Of course. But not at the expense of a top 10 pick. Mid teens yep, but he’s not a top 10 pick.
