Live swap draft night...
See who's available at GWS first pick (currently 10). If there's someone we want we trade 16 and Future First for 10 & 20.
Any takers?
As I see it our options are,
Suns (5) who have indicated they will take 1 pick, so they are most likely to keep 5 and trade 27.
Crows (9) who are rebuilding and probably will keep it and if they were to trade will probably do it with 22,23,or 40
Roos (11) same as the Crows, poss. trade 30 or 39
Swans (3), Hawks (4) & Freo (12) all indications have been they will use them
Dons (6,7,8) may trade 1 of the three, but Dodoro will want our first born.
GWS (10,13,15) Most likely to trade at least 1 of them, we would want pick 10 as it will cover an early pick for Reef, e.g. if Dons pick reef at 6, pick ten, with discount, covers it (10= 1395 pts with disc.=1744, pick 6 =1781).
As GWS would probably prefer to keep 10 & trade 13 or 15, I hope Ned has a plan to pay overs for 10, if we need it, or still probably pay overs, but do a more sensible, fairer trade for 13 or 15 plus hopefully 20.

I don't understand why clubs seem so reluctant to go into deficit for academy, father son kids. They effectively go on to deficit for other players when they trade out future picks.
It’s more desirable to lose a third rounder than be pushed out several spots in the first round.

Ned always pays overs so he’s on board your strategy

I admit it was badly worded, but if we need 10 then we will have to pay overs as GWS will, a) probably like to use it, b) know they have us over a barrel. It will then depend if GWS want a 2021 1st, if we pay overs for 13 or 15.
I would rather pay slightly over for a Pick to get who we want/need than overs for Salaries. We all saw how that went.

And Said Reef getting Intrest from Crows and Bombers

If Dons bid on Reef at 6-8 will 14 be enough to match? If it is and we rate him around that pick I’d just bite the bullet and use it.

Hold 16 and try and use our future first to get two picks in the 20s from the Crows.

Add Reef and 3 other top 25 picks.

We don't have any indigenous players do we? I'm sure someone at the club would be keen not to have Heritier point out during a hearing against us. If thinngs fall our way grabbing other players of need he is a good type to join the mix. We really need more avenues to goal.
What about a young indigenous footballer with prodigious talent. An “excitement machine” who is lightning-quick, has an impressive natural leap, has silky skills and is a smart user of the footy?

Can we trade out pick 14 for Dees 18 and 19 than use pick 16 for Reef if we are worried about an early bid? Gives us 3 inside the top 25 and can use 2021 1st and second on the night if we see someone sliding giving 4 picks inside 25.

How would that benefit Melbourne? They would be giving up two 1st rounders for pick 14? And given they only got those two first rounders by exchanging their 2021 first to brisbane.

Long story short - no. If a bid comes in at pick 8 (9 or 10 after bid matches on JUH and maybe Campbell) then we'd use pick 14 (15 or 16 after bid matches) and our next pick would slip back one spot.

The question would equally be about who else is available - a bid inside the top 10 for Reef would be a mistake imo which the clubs that follow in the first round (including us) may be happy to take advantage of.

I have a lot of Welcome Threads to start then ;)

We have to get this Draft Right

Even if we get a 50% strike rate with 6 picks, it will be a good outcome. 3 quality players in one draft can be a game changer, just like 2014 was for us.

We need something like the Outcome of the 2014 Draft after our Terrible Trade Period

We had a much better picks that year. Shame the Dogs bid on Darcy, an excellent haul, could have been even better
It worked out well imo. We apparently had Maynard at 6 on our board that year, so there’s every chance that even if we’d been lucky enough to get Moore in the 2nd round we may have ended up grabbing Maynard at 9 anyway.

Seriously are we frigging stupid or what? Why in the hell weren't we talking to the Suns about this?

Pick 27 would have a very useful pick to have up our sleeves in a number of ways.

This sort of failure to act now has me looking forward to another 8 days where we will probably do nothing apart from sit on our hands, maybe get screwed in a pick trade on draft night (which we'll describe as "good value") and then have a very vanilla draft because we simply aren't proactive enough to get shit done.

We’d have to give pick 16 for that 27 😂
