I never heard we would not Match a High Bid for Reef anywhere.

We probably won't know until Morning of the Draft at the Earlist
Cal will do his phantom draft on monday. Doesn't that usually give us an idea? by that point he gets leaks about who going where.

How harsh would it be for GWS to bid on Reef the pick before ours? They know we’d match and that we would just lose a pick in the first round. Dick move of the highest quality. They would automatically rise toward Carlton status for hatred. Surely this can’t happen. These phantoms are too scary. We need at least 3 picks if not 4 of the top 30. There is too much talent and potential steals in this draft not to get only 2 picks in. It would be near trade period catastrophe!!

They should be grateful to us for last year. Without us, they wouldn't have Riccardi.

We got a future 4th rounder in Stephenson deal, no? With that recent pick swap we should still have full complement of 2021 picks (plus the extra 2nd rounder) so still fully flexible for draft night trades

No we didn't, it was pick 70 this year. The initial story on afl.com.au was incorrect.

He is being talked up as a bolter right now, being rated 16-19 now a top 10?.... I'll be happy with getting 1 pick in before a bid. We may have to look be asking clubs about a deal. Preferrably Essendon. They are so unpredictable. We know they'll want a tall at very least. Maybe Perkins and with the 3rd.. who knows.

If this is the case why not trade back and trade up. Future and 14 to a pick that hopefully guarantees a pick before Reef then 16 and next years second for 2 picks in the 20’s. Gives us 1 before reef 1 for reef and then a pick in the 20’s for Ford/Gallow/Baldwin/slider??

We need at least 3!

Yeah, hopefully we can do something like that

Yeah we do really need 4 top 30

I generally agree, but surely we aren't live trading for any picks in the late teens/20s until after Reef's selection (or not) is settled.

I'd try to trade up into top 10, probably with Essendon, using pick 16 and future first. Hope we get away with a pick at 14 (or whatever it becomes) before a Reef bid. Match for Reef. Then trade in for a targeted pick in the 20s

Probably fanciful but hopefully it plays out something like this

If we trade our future first away early then what do we use to trade in to the second round? It’s unlikely that we trade away one of the future seconds we hold given we’ll need a lot of points for Daicos next year.

True, but if someone is floating there that they had higher on their board, I hope they pounce, and then let's figure out the Daicos one in the next trade period

If we want to do it a future second for second and future fourth, so the AFL rules allow it might do it. Pick 27 went for future third.

We’ll draft two talls, just not the ones we wanted...
And here lies the issue and doubles-down on the trade period

We really needed to find a way to position ourselves for the players that we need to bring into the system (Developing KPs)

Our draft position is subject to compromise bc of a potential early pick on Reef and the players we want/need gone

I just hope that if they are live picks we take the best available rather than repeat the mistake of the Freeman pick

We completely ballsed it up with that Freeman pick, but within 20-30 minutes looked like geniuses when we selected Langdon and then Marsh (the value we got in what was a pretty skinny draft after the first round was fantastic) so there’ll be value late. The top 4 of 2020 had Andrews, Stewart, Grimes, Blicavs, Henry and Jonas that were brought in late or through an alternative pathway and are either KPP or can pinch hit.

To bring it full circle a practical example in this draft could be that we rate Baldwin top 10 (I’d be shocked if we didn’t have him top 20) and he’s every chance to be there late. I believe the biggest problem is that our football department love two types of talls and they’re rarely there at that point of the draft.

1. Super tall 197cm+ guys that take a while to develop.
2. Competitive high work rate types.

Good options for the second type are rare full stop (Reiwoldt, Hawkins, Mihocek and Dixon are the only ones that immediately spring to mind) and I suspect we’ve brought Keane, Wilson and Murphy in as that type. The first type usually go in the top 10 and the only time we’ve had top 10 picks they haven’t been there.

This overall philosophy only changes once Buckley goes because it’s what he drives. The frustrating thing as a supporter is that we’re only one guy making it as a KPF away from being in a decent position, but none of the options (Murphy, Wilson and Kelly) are ready. It’s why Cox hanging around like dog shit in your runner is making it harder and harder to develop another option. He keeps tantalising someone in a decision making role with performances like the EF and PF, but at 30 we’ve seen all that he has to offer and need to go in a different direction...

We'll draft 6 midfielders

Normally I would agree with you but this draft has some good Key position prospects in the later rounds. I am not a huge fan of Reid and Cox, Reid will be a good defender but I just don't know where Cox's best position will be as he looks more like a Wingman that a KF. Players like Baldwin, Lord, Treacy and Callow look better key forward prospects than the other 2, so, don't worry we will be adding a couple of key position players

Apologies if this has been mentioned a few times, but I would hazard a guess that we do something like this.

Trade our current pick 16 and future 1st for bombers pick 8 and a future 2nd (for Daicos points). Means we prob get two live picks (8 and 14) this year, before we have to match for Reef.

I’d like someone to explain the paranoia about going into deficit.
If going into deficit is not warranted in times like this (to pick up potential guns like Reef and N Daicos), then when is it justified?

Potentially it’s about practicality rather than paranoia? Because the only time it’s been done, Fremantle in 2019, they were exiting the draft after that selection. That’s not a practical outcome with either Daicos or McInnes.
