So let me get this straight we wanted to get into the draft. Before the Treloar trade we had 16,26,33,42,65,70 (not a bad hand). After the Treloar trade we were left with 14,16,65,70. Not sure I’d call that getting into the draft. FMD.

What happens if Reef bid comes in at 20? We will be going into deficit on next years first.

Ok I'm trying to think calmly through this and put emotions aside. Putting my draft cap on let's take a look at what we have:

14,16,65,70 this year and our R1 next year, as well as R2x2 next year.

We will undoubtedly try and ship next year's R1 off for one this year, and then trade the two from this year for one top 10 and one say in the 20s. I think Essendon are a good shout at 6/7/8 but also Adelaide at 9 then having 22/23.

We could trade 14 & 16 for say 9 + 23, then flip our R1 next year for GIANTS pick 10 let's say.

9, 10, 23, R2x2 next year.

If we stay there (9, 10, 23), I think we look at grabbing say Nik Cox and Zach Reid or Heath Chapman as the best KPP available at those picks. If we can get up to that 6/7/8 we have a chance of Thilthorpe potentially. We grab McInnes with 23.

The club will see McInnes as a taller Treloar so therefore long-term takes over that role, whilst we have the two KPPs to develop around. I'd love to get into that top five, but we will see what will happen.

I was listening to the Carlton list manager this arvo and they were asking why they and Essendon were haggling over pick swaps in the 70s & 80s.

He said that due to bid matching and clubs not taking many picks that those picks could come in by as many as 30 picks (which then have points attached).

To that end our 65 and 70 could end up around the 50 mark. Hope Hine has some late specials lined up if that’s the case.

This actually makes me feel better. Thank you.

If we’re able to achieve something like that and possibly something along the lines of the GC kid Jen mentioned late then it would go some way to lifting the dread I feel currently.

I don’t mind the pick split of 14,16 for 9 and 23. Gets you a top 10 pick and the other can be used on Reef. I wonder whether we might actually hold onto the future first now until next period.

If we make a play next off season for a RFA we could then use that future first to trade for that player; if the opposition match the bid. Still have the 2 x future 2nds for Daicos points.

I reckon it might be a prearranged or in principle deal for draft night. If it gets to pick 9 and someone we really want is there then we pull the trigger.

Wonder if Gws would consider a swap of our future first for pick 13 and a handshake agreement not to bid on Reef (at 15)?

Based on the current draft order they seem the only team likely to bid.

We could then potentially pick up 3 first rounders (13,14,16) as well as Reef.

I think the whole idea will be to avoid using a first round pick on him. Not sure why others are suggesting otherwise.

Well there was talk the the Crows were keen on that pick 14. Although I think they were offering Dogs 22,23 for it. Whether or not they’d give up 9 to move back 5 spots would be the question.

Our problem then would be what if Reef gets past 16? We’ve literally got no picks with points left this year (65,70,75,92).

Maybe then we could look to trade the future 1st for Crows 22,23 or 22 and another future 2nd.

All going to depend on who each club is targeting and whether Essendon think they could get the player they’d use 9 on at 14. If they think they can then getting 16 instead of 23 may be beneficial to them.

Also depends on whether our research tells us where a bid on Reef will come before 23. If the bid is expected between 16-23 then we’re unlikely to consider it.

Crows have 9,23,23

Bombers have 6,7,8

Reckon Crows might consider moving back 5 spots if there’s a local kid they think will still be there at 14 over 9.

I don’t think it will be that hard. Supposedly clubs will be taking very few picks. It’s possible our Round 4 picks could move up into the 50’s somewhere.

After the discount they should cover most of a bid on Reef. Which based on my scenario would potential come 17<.

Any small amount left over we would have to go into deficit next year.

We really need to secure more high second/third round picks next year to match an early Daicos bid though. As assuming a bid comes within the first 3, even after the discount, that’s a shitload of points.

But hey... that’s next years problem...

I understand what you are saying and I think those late picks will come in too. But will they come in enough by the time the Reef bid comes in? They might still be out of points range.

If a bid comes somewhere 17-25 probably not.

But that doesn’t matter and doesn’t mean you can’t match it. You just take on the deficit of say 300-400’ish points into next year (which is the equivalent of a pick in the 40’s).

We’ll need to trade into next years draft anyway with future picks (or trading out players) to cover points for Daicos regardless. So what’s an extra 400 points?

Two things need to happen

1. Our 2021 first rounder needs to be converted to a top 13 pick in 2020. You'd think it'll land around 8-12 next year, whether we package it with a future second to get in that 8-10 range or potentially pick 16 to get even higher...

2. Bid for Reef comes later than pick 16.

If we can exit the draft with say picks 10,14,16 + Reef OR 5,14 + Reef then that's a a huge influx of top end talent.

This would be the only way the club can salvage a scrap of pride, but even then they have to nail the draft and we all know hine likes to pull shit out his ass at draft time, 3 first round picks better not be another broomy and kennedy and grundy

How do we pay for Reef after Pick 16.

3 picks in the teens excluding Reef should be Cook, Callow and best available kpd.

We absolutely need to try and engineer this type of deal

If we get 3 first round picks PLUS Reef who many rate top 15 talent, it gives you a chance to rebuild well if you nail the selections (plus Daicos next year and maybe Dib)

We also need to get a late or rookie selection who can fix our small forward woes. Hopefully there is another Liam Ryan in the state leagues somewhere.

Going into deficit next year. Think it would mean our first rounder would move back a few slots
The 65,70,75,85 picks will come back into the 40-55 range and will have good points attached to them. We should not need to go into defecit. They can also do live trades on the night to accumulate late picks other clubs don't want/need if necessary

They will come in for 2 reasons - clubs like Brisbane will have 1 pick max, so a lot of the picks allocated to them will disappear pre draft

Also a lot of picks for Port Syd and WB will disappear for their academy picks when they get selected in the top 10-15. We can bid on these to force them if required.
