Pie 4 Life - I think you mentioned Cox earlier as a potential pick for us. Where do you see him playing his best football? Forward or Back?

Can play either but think defence is probably where he lands. Reads the ball in flight really well and good hands at the highest point. Can kick either side.

Anyone interested should watch his Wildcard Round match against Western Jets last year. There was a six-goal breeze at Ballarat and he switched ends to be at the end where the wind was blowing so he played two quarters forward and two quarters back. That's how versatile he is, can switch mid-game and switch back.

People will want to keep their expectations low and stop dreaming about pick No.2 as that isn't happening IMO.

Other clubs simply have better draft hands than us should North Melbourne auction off pick 2 to the highest bidder.

If we are to trade our future 1st I'd rather start draft night with the potential of walking away with 3 first round selections plus Reef rather than one single top 6 pick plus Reef.

If we only walk away with two live 1st round selections plus Reef owing to a bid so be it.

As the indicative draft order stands now GWS seems the most likely option to trade with.

Our future 1st plus pick 16 for selection 13 & 15 might be all we can hope for and leave us with 13, 14, 15.

Not convinced GWS would even go for that and will be looking to package up their draft picks to move up the draft board before entertaining any other deals.
I'd be very disappointed if we traded 3R1s for Logan McDonald effectively. Keep in mind what we've already given up, that's effectively two Treloars, two Stephensons and a Phillips for one player.

I see value by trading our R1 next year for a top 10 this year, so we can have three R1s, then go two talls, one best available and Reef.

If we wanted pick 2 so badly we should have shipped JDG to North for pick 2. They would have fallen over themselves to sign a player of his calibre.

My concern with trying that is the PSD. It would have been a real possibilty

I’m hoping Essendon might see a benefit in having 2 firsts this year and two next and would be interested in ours for pick 8.

I’m guessing we’d have to potentially pick swap as well

I really like the look of Phillips from his clip. Exactly the type our midfield needs. A solid inside ball winner with breakaway pace.

An Adam Treloar type.

If no team has bid on McInnes by pick 16, then i'm guessing we'll trade pick 16 for 2 or more earlier picks? Like pick 25 and 30
I think we might try to somehow trade in one more pick at 50+. Maybe by trading our future first for a first rounder and a late pick from a club that won’t be using their later ones. Once bids are in for the dogs, Sydney and Ports NGA players all our late picks could well be about 10 spots up the order.

In a year where there was no u18 footy there will surely be a high chance of guys being taken late (50-75) becoming guns. Some grow and develop later than others who look like superstars when they are 17.

Think of Bont where he was nowhere on the radar of being a draft pick at the start of his u18 year. He came on strong at the end. Had this been his draft year with no footy and smaller list sizes he would likely not have been drafted at all.

Needs:
Key Forward x2
small forward x2
balanced mid

What we don't need:
Ruckman
mid size defender

1 ruckman and 2 mid size defenders coming right up!

We haven’t drafted a tall forward despite it being a desperate need for years. What makes you think we’ll finally do one now.

Bont was well and truly on the radar, was regarded from early on as a late first rounder. He bolted up the order late in the season to be sure, but it’s not like he was invisible at the start of the year.

An Adam Treloar type.

That’s what I thought when I saw him. I wasn’t as wowed as others. Certainly didn’t seem like mind blowing talent but could be similar to what we just lost if things go well for him.

would love Hollands (mix of Fyfe, Goddard & Whitfield)... or obv McDonald.

With our picks though, reckon dekka will go for Cox (taller & dual sided Ben Reid), Grainger-Barras (Naughton) or Cook, then Reef... outside chance we get two of the first three, then Reef.

At first glance, wouldnt take Callow, & wouldnt take Thilthorpe if we had 2... prefer Hollands

I think our best hope is future first to Giants for two of those teen picks we would then have picks 13, 14, 15, 16.
That would be a great hall and imagine a pick for Reef comes after 16....Which it probably won't because it's Collingwood.

Probs won’t happen but it would be magic and would allow us to make 2x solid picks as well as roll the dice on players that could be anything like Callow and Lord

  • I don't see any club giving up their top ten selection this year. We might be able to move up a couple of places but the question should be asked, is it worth it! Fremantle might not need picks between 12 -15 for Chapman or O'Driscoll, a pick swap could be a possibility.

Players i would love to fall to CFC picks.
Perkins
Henry
Laurie

What are people thoughts on Kaine Baldwin for one of our first two picks.

Or is he too risky due to his injury history.

I reckon it’s a risk worth taking based on what I see.

The two past drafts based off highlights that I really rated were Bont & Bolta. The third B is up there as well.

That's McInnes though. Better speed than Phillips, bigger body, just less consistent across the overall areas. As much as I'd love to see us picking up Phillips, if we have a pick in the region that he will be in, we'll go tall. That's what Ned Guy has said the entire time, looking to the talls.

The only issue will be if we end up with say pick 6-8 and assume the top 5 are JUH, McDonald, DGB, Hollands, Phillips. It gets a bit tricky because do you reach for a tall? Or do you take best available. I think it comes down to when our next pick is. If we end up with only two top 15 picks, I can't see us taking Phillips unless we know we will grab a Reid/Cox in the next pick. Maybe Heath Chapman too perhaps.

In the hypothetical world that we picked up both Reid and N. Cox, the trio (including Moore) of a spine would be ridiculously athletic and you could carry a lumbering giant like M. Cox. For some reason Reid cops shit on this forum and I have no idea why, a 200cm player who is versatile, a lovely kick of the ball and a huge upside? Yes please.

We could grab a pick in the 30s and he will easily be there if we are willing to take a risk. Huge no on a R1 pick, especially with the talent on the board in terms of talls with durability.

We won't get a top 10 for next year's R1. If we are confident that Reef won't be bid on before our picks, we could possibly trade next year's 1st + 14/16 for about pick 10 + some scraps to get points for Reef. But if we are confident that Reef won't be bid on before our pick, then we'd be better off keeping next year's first and then using later round picks from next year to trade for points for Reef.

I don't understand how we didn't manage to get some scrappy point carrying picks thrown into our firesale. This year, those R3 picks should be virtually worhtless for draft purposes and should only have value for points- there's going to be a record low number of kids picked so many clubs won't go that deep into the draft. Plus with no footy in Vic and thus teams relying on U17 performance, draft boards are going to be all over the place meaning you'll probably get the same kid for a 5th round pick that you would have used on your 3rd round pick.

If we can get a pick in the 30s, we should be able to match a bid for Reef with discount and our cheap ones at the end (currently totalling to #61).

The strength of next year's draft is much stronger than this one, and if a club looks at this debacle of the Trade Period, it would not take too long to deduce every chance we could be in the Top 10 picks next year. That's just missing the finals. For a team like GWS for example that does not necessarily need all the picks, they might consider something, or a team that has a lot of players they are interested in at the top-end of next year's draft. Ideally if we can grab a late R2/early R3 pick somehow, that would be perfect. I can't see Reef getting a bid before Pick 16 at this stage, certainly not before 14, so we should be fine even if we ended up going to the draft with the current hand (though we would go into deficit next year, so need to get that extra pick in).

Our Top 10 Pick Next year be Nick Daicos unless we Finish Last;)

I don't think we'll need to get a pick in the 30s to match. With the big range in possible list sizes, this is one year where you can treat academy points like they were treated before they brought in the rule that you could only take in as many picks as you had available list spots - four nothing picks - for fake list spots that you're never going to main list someone - to add up to a pick 30. The draft probably won't even last deep enough for all the point carrying picks to get used. These picks should be dirt cheap as their only real value is to the clubs that have academy kids. That's why I'm annoyed that we didn't manage to get a couple thrown our way in the firesale.

There is every chance that we'll recieve a top 10 pick next year, but I don't think that any club would be banking on it. Then when you factor in that clubs tend to get less value for next years than they get for this year's picks. Even if next year's crop were tracking better in U16s, teams will have to be a bit wary as they didn't get to see if that tracking remained positive - plenty of highly rate u16s lose value before their u18 draft year. So I think there is no chance that next year's R1 pick gets traded for a top 10.
