Yeah bidding is always tricky. Especially without live trading. I agree I would have matched those bids. I'm just hoping the McInnes bid does not come too much before the first pick, and a dream would be after the second pick. The BF Phantom Draft is always a bit of fun because you've got half a dozen coaches who are really in the know, about half a dozen who have seen a fair bit of footy in terms of a certain state, and then half a dozen who are mostly going off highlights/what they read.

I remember a couple of years back I was Hawks and got [PLAYERCARD]Max King[/PLAYERCARD] at Pick 9/10/11 or something which was fun.

Now now...mitigating circumstances Broomhead, Kennedy, Shaz and Freeman...nobody could foresee those issues.

Sier is still, and similar to McClarty from memory were later picks.

Stevo won a rising star, but agree is no good. Question is whether there were many quality options after him in the draft.

I’d prefer to look at the gems he has picked. After Geelong I’d rate him second or third best recruiter.

I keep mentioning him. Love the kid. As I said earlier in the thread, if you've got a 200cm player who uses the ball well out of defence with good composure, what's not to love? He's still raw and has areas to build upon, but the stuff that his role is often not great at, he has down pact. Honestly I'd be thrilled to pick him up.

Cox is more athletic, Reid has better footy smarts. That's a very simplistic view and there's a lot more little facets to it, but when looking on the surface, that's effectively the key difference. In the same way that Cox's footy smarts and Reid's athleticism do not deteriorate from the players/roles they play, they are just different in different ways. I think the whole natural football smarts are the harder aspect to improve, and both players are nice kicks, Cox just has this awkward kind of motion when he is kicking it, but it is still effective. Reid has a much more fluid motion that is much better to watch. Cox is that touch stronger, though both still have to put on a fair bit of weight, and both have shown the capability to play forward - Cox did it quite a bit, whereas Reid actually went forward and basically won two games with late goals. His reading in the air at either end is very good. It's one of those can't lose situations, but if I had to make a call, I'd pick Reid, though I'd be far from disappointed if we ended up with Cox. In fact, I'd be happy if we had both because as I've mentioned previously, having players who are not slow/sluggish KPPs is seemingly the way we are going, and having Moore with those two going forward, you can carry a slower forward in that regard due to their slimmer/more mobile builds.

the only true misses there are McClarty and Kennedy - all the others had subsequent issues that any additional DD could not have predicted.

Just can’t see us doing anything with Next years second . We traded in a 2021 at a big cost already, this to cover Daicos . I more like your first part of 16 + next yrs first for 9 & 22 off the Crows .

I have no idea if North would do this... probably not... but anyway...

What if we were to trade out 14, 16, Future First and one of our future seconds (ours or the Bulldogs', whichever North expect will be more valuable) for 2, 11, 39, 71 from North.

Picks wise we'd be getting pick ~52 for nothing. That's where it probably falls over, but North just have to hope we fall next year. We'd get 2, 11 and Reef on draft night...

We'd be using picks 39, 65, 70 and 71 (604 points) to match a bid on Reef, which - and correct me if I'm wrong - with the 20% discount covers up to Pick 27 without a deficit into next year. I think our later picks would also shuffle forward with other teams matching bids, so may be even better than this? Can someone educate me here?

Only issue is we'd only have one pick next year in each of the rounds 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. next year. But I guess come next year we'd be able to trade out a 2022 pick or two for some 2021 points.

I have 31 contracted senior list players and 3 contracted rookies. Wilson, Noble and Keane. I haven't seen anywhere that Noble or Keane have been elevated to the senior list.

I haven't seen Madgen, Tohill, Appleby or Wills, re-contracted or delisted on either the rookie or senior list as yet.

I though Tohill signed an extension when he agreed to return this year.

Add Cox's mobility. He appears to have the mobility as that hybrid KF that we are after, but is still 200cm. He's not going to be a Hawkins type monster but here's hoping he could be a taller Gunston. Gunston is very footy smart though.

and this is all based on us selecting him. If he goes elsewhere, I hope he stinks it up.

2020 list was in total 47 players. Breakdown was 38 senior list , 5 x Rookies and 4 by Category B rookies.
We currently have with retirements , delisting and traded players 10 players off that list leaving us with a current list size of 37 players in total. ( Beams included as retirement)

our senior list is currently 31 players but Miocheck and Madgen must be upgraded this year so that’s 33 so called confirmed. I think Keynes resigning for 2 years means he must also upgrade to the senior list so that’s no 34 players.

I’d say they will at max sign or draft onto the senior list Reef plus 2 or 3 players depending what they do with picks 14-16 and next years first being traded into this year.
That would leave our senior list with 37 or 38 players.
I think with Greenwood that they may delist him and re rookie him on a 1 year deal.
Also they may do the same with Wills.

if they make no changes to Greenwood / Wills from the senior list we will have 37-38 senior list after drafting.

rookie list will be Noble, Appleby,

category B rookies will be 2: Tolhill and Wilson.

so total list size would be 41-42 players.

this would allow for between 2-3 players available to pick up in the preseason or delisted player market .
I believe if the pies use this it will be for ready made player. Potentially Parker from the saints , maybe Lonie if we offer him a 2 year contract and someone from SANFL or WAFL .

There is more of a chance Cox is rather than Reid, but still some sort of a chance. I think a club will probably pounce on Reid before us, so that's why we would need to trade up anyway.

Yep and to be transparent on here regarding the BF draft, I see a tall as an absolute necessity to call it a successful draft. Would I love to walk away with two talls and McInnes? Absolutely.

Is it more important we get a tall or McInnes? I'd lean to the former. Which is why I think depending on how the draft plays out, I will assess when the time comes, if a bid say comes in a couple of picks before. The goal is Reid/Cox/Chapman (barring a ridiculous DGB slider which I cannot see happening given the coaches in front of me). If say two of them are still on the board when the bid comes in, I have to really work out if one of them will still be there at the next pick. If I can grab at least one tall I'm happy.

I know some on here would love to reach for Callow or Baldwin with say Pick 16. But if I'm being honest, I'm not overly comfortable doing that. I think I would back myself to use the shit picks at the end to at least pick up a development tall.

My dream draft would be to get one/two talls (or at least one and maybe that bit of X-factor in the forward half/midfield), along with McInnes. The advantage I have compared to probably 80% of the drafters is I feel comfortable in the 50s and 60s. Do I want to be there? Not really as I don't rate the back end of the draft. But could I find something at a bargain basement price? Most likely.

If trading was available in the draft, I would 100% look to trade up marginally to secure a tall, trade out of next year (because in this draft it won't matter lol), to grab an extra pick, and then use basically three/four picks in that top 30 region. If I had say pick 25, knowing I had picked up best available earlier, then a reach for one of the other talls would be okay then.

One of the issues with Kennedy was that Hine recruited him because he thought he'd be a top small forward. But the club bulked him up and tried to turn him into an inside mid - so he became an in-between nothing player. Something also went horribly wrong with his kicking.

If we can't get to the very top of the draft to access the likes of McDonald, DGB or Thilthorpe would we be better of taking a mid or two and aiming to get say maybe Callow and Keitel in the second/third round? Once you get past the two or three top line KPP's in the pool, I get a bit nervous about the next tier of KPP. The likes of Cox and Reid seem to be more like "WIP types", which I don't think you'd take inside the top 20, and a guy like Chapman who is only 193cm so not really a true KPD.

Yes, very few 18-year old's in the draft are "blue chip investments", but I think we need to be a bit safe with our first 2/3 selections rather than taking a risk inside the top 20 on skinny, project KP types. I know we need KPP's however I'd rather take a risk on them with later picks, rather than use our early picks if we can't get to the top tier KPP's.

Based solely on the ever-reliable youtube highlights, I'd draft Cox in a heartbeat. Whilst, he'll probably be a work in progress as a KPP, he might be able to slot in on a wing pretty quickly whilst he bulks up. I'd trade up to get him.

I saw an interview with him on the news last week. Dad played for Fitzroy, and gave him a weights program during lockdown. The kid has added 7 kgs so he is much bigger than on the highlights.

Wills will definitely get another year - he's not exactly the most attacking midfielder you'll ever see, but he can still play a role at AFL level as an in and under mid who will get his hands dirty and, with our our midfield depth taking a significant hit in the trade period, we will probably need to keep him on the list as a "break glass in case of emergency" type, in case of injury or if some of the kids who we are anticipating might fill the void take a bit longer to step up than we are hoping.

Other than Treloar, what was the hit we took?

Phillips had already been moved from the midfield cohort. Beams was a non-event. Stevo had little impact. Varcoe was preferred @ HF or HB. Broomy was always seen as a HF more than a mid.

We already have Rantall and Bianco developing with both having midfield potential, Wilson is being groomed to play wing, the Brown boys seem better suited to a midfield role, Sier is due for a change in fortunes. That's without any additions we get through the draft.

Given Treloar's well known midfield issues, I'm just not seeing this significant hit.
