Cox:
- 200 cm, and maybe still growing
- starting to put on muscle, up to mid/high 80s
- can play at either end
- good in the air
- 6.03 2km time trial (which would be top 2 at Collingwood)
- looks to be pretty quick
- beautiful natural kick of both feet

How is this kid not a top 10 lock?
Reece Stanley had those stats, I think he's one of those players who needs to be settled in one position hopefully FF. No one really knows where his best position is so that will probably prevent him being top 10. Having all those attributes doesn't guarantee he will be a good player

Maybe a bit quirky, but looking at our haul from the last 5 drafts, 17 players all up, it struck me we have a pretty meagre wash up and it emphasis’s my thought about how we can get caught up in building these kids up.

Try this, if you looked at one of our boards old whipping boys, Jarryd Blair, how many of the players drafted in the last five years do you imagine will make a bigger contribution to Collingwood than Blair did. My list is below

2015
Sier. Probably not
Phillips. No
Wills. No
Crocker. No

2016
McLarty no
Call Brown. Probably not
Kirby no
Daicos Yes

2017
Stephenson No, our star of last 5 drafts
Murphy probably not
T Brown a chance

2018
Quaynor. Clear yes
Kelly Early days but a good chance
Atu No

2019
Rantall. Unknown but probably not
Bianco. Unknown but probably not
Ruscoe. Doubtful

So for me 2/17 have clearly shown enough to expect they will be better than Blair’s contribution. 6 are definite no’s and the rest we see, probably 2-3 will do so

We have lost 2 A grade talents off our list, maybe they didn’t do too much in 2020 but I doubt we are replacing them in this years draft and only 2 left on the list from the last 5 years have any realistic chance of being at that level.

Nick D is the obvious next high level talent we have access to. They are bloody hard to get and we gave two away for peanuts. Sorry still angry and it looks like this will all
simmer down and Eddie/Bucks etc won’t feel
the consequences

It's probably not fair to exclude Phillips and Stephenson because we stuffed up our cap. There are 4 clear hits there, 5 where they've played seniors and showed signs but jury is out, 3 misses (including Wills) then last years draft which is too early to call.

Wonder if a team like GWS who have 13,15 and 20 would trade two of those picks for our 2021 first, if their assumptions are we don’t make finals or slide down the ladder etc.

Be interesting on a few fronts, first have four picks inside the top 20 would be a great hand. Take 3 top 15 selections and use 20 on the reef bid. Would also be interesting to see where another club rates our list, they would probably only they do that trade if they feel they’ll get a top 10-ish level pick back?

Long term position at the top level? Does he gain separation as a forward? How competitive is he? Workrate? Below his knees? I don’t know anything about this draft crop, but perhaps he has a question mark against him in one of those areas because you’ve basically described pre-draft Schache except the skill on either foot and elite tank.

The counter to that is he might well be a top 10 lock and either the wrong clubs have picks (for instance Collingwood, St Kilda, Carlton and WC might all have him top 5 on their board) or the media haven’t caught up to it yet.

Definitely not a 2 for 1, but I could see them parting with 15 or 20. We’d also be mad to use a pick like 20 on Reef when a bunch of our garbage picks will get it done.

In an alternate reality where they go for it a better outcome would be 15 and a future 2nd for our future 1st.

Yeah for me it depends on what you’re trying to assess if it’s the talent ID then that call is wrong, but if it’s a simple who’ll have the better career at Collingwood player X or Blair? Then it’s correct.

Only thing is what’s the point of that particular whipping boy based discussion? At least if it’s a discussion on talent ID we can discuss why we got it wrong and how we we’d like the club to improve.

For mine even commenting on Bianco, Rantall and Ruscoe given they’re 12 months in is rough and Kelly gets a tick after one so so game (by so so I mean he didn’t show anything in the way of KPF traits). I mean Murphy despite all his injuries has shown more than Kelly thus far given his 2018 games were solid and he was the 2020 best reserve player.

Edit: as an FYI prime Blair in the second half of his career number wise is pretty much what Brown’s produced in 19 & 20 yet he’s a probably not...

Blair (14-18): 15 possessions .7 goals .6 goal assists and 4.7 tackles
Brown (2020 adjusted by 20%): 14.9 possessions, .5 goals, .5 goal assists and 3.4 tackles.

Why don't you think Bianco and Rantall won't make it?
He’s being overly harsh Dave. It’s almost impossible to make a call on any of the 2019 draftees at this stage.

That what I thought too.

With no real 2nd Games Happening it's hard to know really who going to make it or not from the 2019 Draft.

I can't wait to Reid about which player you pick. Don't Cox it up.
Bit tough to add the third one.

So far Hollands, Thilthorpe and JUH are down, probably McDonald next based on the trend. Which is good news for us as it means DGB is potentially sliding to Essendon, and leaves KPDs in the pool.

Pick 16 + 2021 1st + 2021 2nd for Pick 9, 22 and 23.

9: Cox/Reid (fingers crossed)
14: Macrae
22: Reef
23: Ford
Then hopefully once our late picks come up we can nab Callow or Lord.

That would be a perfect draft for me.
I reckon we will try and get Gold Coast's Pick 5 IMO. They only need one pick, and could end up 5 + 27 for a couple of our picks (R1 next year and say 14) - with maybe something else.

Sure Would be but Sadly I doubt it happens in Real Live

That would be huge. Knowing Hine he’d end up picking Phillips at 5 though 🤣

That would not Shock Me Espically with McDonald and Thirpole Gone.

What IF Phillips was already Drafted?

That's the trade I also suggested we try and do. Callow and/or Lord would be great with our late picks. With Daicos next year, would set up our midfield beautifully. We can only dream.

If Phillips was already gone then it would mean that one of Thilthorpe or DGB will be almost certain to be available. It would be an amazing outcome for us.

I think we will take 4, hopefully 2 before Reef.

I think we'll lose at least 1 of Appleby or Wills at today's list lodgment, potentially both. That would allow extra picks. Ideally we'd trade our 2021 1st and get 3 of those picks before a bid comes for Reef.

I think he'd be a great selection. I think the reason he's not higher is his frame/weight, footy IQ and probably because he's a defender not forward.

I don't know if the footy IQ is really an issue for Cox - in every bit of footage I've seen of him playing he seems to make good decisions without being rushed and seems to read the play pretty well.

I suspect the knock on him is that he looks more like a really tall midfielder rather than a lead, mark and kick goal type of tall forward and his skillset does lead itself more to playing further up the ground at either end (ie. CHB or maybe a roaming CHF).

Don't be such a tease with the twitter shares Jen, you'll only get us all depressed wanting what we can't have... *sniff* :'(
I know. But I imagine all kids say this.

Things change very easily in football.

The devoted Pies fan is unashamed about his desire to follow in the footsteps of No. 1 draft pick Nick Riewoldt, who his roaming athletic game has been compared to this year.

“I would love to be the No. 1 pick. I have played footy for as long as I can remember and I have dreamed about getting drafted and that opportunity is two weeks away. Being taken No. 1 is definitely something I would be proud about when my career is finished.

“I have been a Collingwood supporter all my life, I am a massive Scott Pendlebury fan but I have always loved Nick Riewoldt. He is a class forward and so consistent and he was able to change his game and be a versatile forward so he’s definitely someone where I have taken hints from his game and tried to adopt them in mine.”

Yeah, grain of salt stuff there. I’m sure most kids come in to the system expecting to stay at the one club.
