Yeah I was quoting that bit. But that swap pick with Hawthorn seemed to be to our benefit, partially reducing the pain of giving Phillips to them for nothing ( pick 65 in a draft that only went to 58)
On that basis you are saying we gave them pick 19-36 in 2021 draft (likely to be somewhere in the 20's) for 2020 pick 41 and Phillips for 42. Using that logic makes Phillips trade better but the first part of the deal is where all the pain is. Not sure it really improves things, just changes the shocker part of the deal from Phillips to giving up a much earlier pick in probably a better draft for 41

and We hear that Reef was getting no High Bids from Crows and Bombers

Apparently the Crows had heard Fremantle were interested in Pedlar, so they took him ahead of their pick. I am thinking we knew this as well, and knew Fremantle would be taking O'Driscoll or another WA player.

Essendon reaching with Reef would've been a major blow but also somewhat stupid by them.

I generally don't buy in too much to who won or lost drafts because the reality is we aren't going to know for a few years about how well we have done from a recruitment sense and by then we will have moved on to that year's current crop. There is always optimism about all the kids, and I know a lot of people criticise Kevin Sheehan for being so positive about them all, but the draftees are the best talent of their draft year so there is reason to be. However the reality is not all of the 50 odd kids drafted on Wednesday are not going to make it, history tells us that, and whilst we may have an idea of who will and who won't we won't know that for certain until the fullness of time.

However, I do think we one the draft night because after the trade period there was a lot of negativity around the club, especially amongst fans. It was hard to get excited about anything Collingwood. The club was in desperate need of something positive, some hope, and the recruitment team lead by Derek Hine has delivered that. There is reason to be hopeful about the kids that we have drafted and it is hard to see how Hine and co could have done any better on draft night unless we could trade into the top ten, and my read was for all the talk, there wasn't an appetite for any of the clubs in possession of the top 10 picks to realistically entertain a trade. Derek Hine and the recruitment team have ably done their job, it's now over the coaches and players to take it from there.

I'm worried more about the coaches than the players. I think Bucks is a good coach with the right people around him but our assistant coaching situation is dire. Hoping for some positive news there soon.

My God, what is Ed doing wasting time talking to these kids! Doesn't he have important decisions to be made somewhere?
The “important decision” is deciding how tall they are. Based on this photo, their height power rankings are now:

McMahon 196
Reef 193
Poulter 192
Henry 190
Man Bun McCreery 188
Macrae 187

Big noise at McCreery’s solid entry. Good to see him taking his height seriously... albeit based on one photo where he is closer to the camera and in no way verifiable.

Stunning draft haul for your lot.
Whatever mess your salary cap was in has been largely sorted and you aren't likely to miss the guys that were offloaded.

The bad press from the AT business will be or has been forgotten, and TBH I reckon you've dodged a huge bullet there.

I can't wish you luck, but credit where it's due.
That was a difficult off season for your club, and ruthless as ****. But the results are very impressive.

We did very well with the hand we had but we did invest heavily and probably walked away with the sixth or seventh best crop of players compared to other teams. We were never going to match what Ess, NM, Adel, Syd were going to pick up last night.
Whilst I was hoping Cox would slip to us. With two skinny talls who were generally rated similarly to our guys and a higher risk player type. I reckon the odds are on our guys ending up better than the Essendon boys.

I hope we invite Baldwin to train with us over the summer.

Wonder if it's reasonable to ask an Adelaide kid to come over to train when his training is likely very limited. We could probably offer connection to our knee specialists I suppose.

Collingwood was the most active club on draft night, making a swag of trades and finishing with a large haul. It grabbed two players Henry (brother of Geelong’s Jack) and Macrae (brother of Western Bulldog Jack) who some considered top-15 players before matching a bid on NGA prospect McInnes. Poulter has X-factor and a bright personality that Magpies fans will love, while McMahon and McCreery each offer something a bit different in attack – one as a young tall, the other as a 19-year-old speedster who loves to tackle.

VERDICT: A

After wanting to tear up membership on the back of the Adam Treloar trade period saga, Collingwood fans have been offered plenty of hope by a draft haul that might be critical in relaunching the club’s next tilt at a premiership. Went hard and it paid off.

We wouldn't have done that trade with the Hawks unless we thought there was a good chance of a Reef bid.

Well, in short, yes.

My understanding of it was that we had pretty well worked out that a bid would come for Reef after our two picks; Essendon would be reaching and their early selections were almost the most predictable of the night, Adelaide declaring interest in Pedlar to get in before Fremantle and what I can only assume was a prior agreement with GWS.

Before bids etc. shuffled the draft order, we started the night with 65, 66 & 68 which was a total of 229 points. When taking discount into account, we could only match anything from only Pick 41 onwards without deficit of any kind!

Hence we needed the 2 x 40s picks to match Reef otherwise I assume it would've had immediate impact on our future picks and/or our ability to trade them? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry about that. The link works for me,but that must be because I’m a subscriber of the Herald Sun.I don’t know how you provide links to the paper that aren’t paywalled.

You could copy & paste the relevant bits as an edit to the post with the link. That way you give the credit to the Hun.

EDIT: I see you did it but then I assume the mods deleted it. Oh well.
