List Mgmt. 2020 Draft Thread

Well, in short, yes.

My understanding of it was that we had pretty well worked out that a bid would come for Reef after our two picks; Essendon would be reaching and their early selections were almost the most predictable of the night, Adelaide declaring interest in Pedlar to get in before Fremantle and what I can only assume was a prior agreement with GWS.

Before bids etc. shuffled the draft order, we started the night with 65, 66 & 68 which was a total of 229 points. When taking discount into account, we could only match anything from only Pick 41 onwards without deficit of any kind!

Hence we needed the 2 x 40s picks to match Reef otherwise I assume it would've had immediate impact on our future picks and/or our ability to trade them? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

A heap of picks were always going to vanish through matching other academy kids before Reef, thus pushing up our low picks and increasing their points value. Supposedly we were going to be able to match a bid in the 20s. We would have only needed to trade in a few more points to get the required amount when a bid came - if it came after our picks. TBH, I don't understand why we did that trade at all.

Yep, we could have walked away with Henry, Macrae and McInnes without doing any of those other trades. But picking Poulter (pick 30), McMahon (pick 31), and McCreery (pick 44) wouldn't have been possible I don't think. Who knows who would have been available when our other later picks were available. I guess that's the trade off for next years picks.

I think Mcreery has the most impressive highlights packages, considering he plays in one of the toughest positions.

He will be putting pressure on WHE and could allow De Goey to spend more time in midfield.

Stoked with how it went. The fact the bid for McInnes (who I see as top 10 talent) didn't come until after our first 2 picks was awesome. We landed Poulter, Henry & Macrae, players who the club view as top 20 talent. McMahon is a high ceiling player (low floor) but could really be something as well as Jack Ginnivan who is another player I was quite high on. I know nothing about McCreery and Chugg so will refrain from commenting. On top of that, we gave up our future first which was most likely going to be swallowed up by the Daicos bid and in return, we now have I believe 2 seconds, 3 thirds and a 4th (might be more or less, dont know the exact pick situation as we did so much trading) which is a fair bit of currency to match a bid for him. Obviously depends on how they develop but I imagine that Henry is the only one that plays R1 with Macrae being not too far behind and McInnes/Poulter behind that. McMahon is probably a few years away.

On that basis you are saying we gave them pick 19-36 in 2021 draft (likely to be somewhere in the 20's) for 2020 pick 41 and Phillips for 42. Using that logic makes Phillips trade better but the first part of the deal is where all the pain is. Not sure it really improves things, just changes the shocker part of the deal from Phillips to giving up a much earlier pick in probably a better draft for 41
Round 2 this year didn't start until pick 27. If the status quo stays the same next year, we gave up a 2021 pick in the late 30's for pick 41 this year.

I think all of WHE, Brown and Thomas should be feeling pretty nervous. In addition to McReery, Macrae and Henry are both very capable forwards. Reef too, although I think he’ll be a slower burn with his current endurance.

hard to imagine it continuing next year given changes to NGA priority access in the 1st round after this year for clubs other than the northern academies.

Never too early to start thinking about 2021.

Light on for talls relative to this year.

True, but I think there will be a few 19 year old talls from this years draft pushing their case hard, so there might be a couple of decent ones to be had that aren’t listed there.

I suspect we will turn over another fairly large group of players next season. Cox, JT, Mayne, Greenwood, Cameron, Lynch etc maybe look to trade sier given we just drafted two large mids.
I reckon the turnover will be relatively low tbh. There are a couple of retirements and a couple of OOC players who should be moved on, but I can’t see us moving more than 4-5 next year, maximum.

apparently we will need list spots for picks to match Daicos so i would guess 6-8

as we won't have a Strong Draft Hand in 2021 unless we make some Big Trades for Picks in next years Trade Period

There's no reason why next year we won't match a bid on Daicos and then afterwards trade our future (2022) first into the 2021 draft if there's someone on the board we like.

As boring as the other night was for some other clubs, live trading has made the draft all that much more intriguing.

I disagree. I think the 3 mentioned in Greenwood, Roughy, and Mayne could be coming to the end of their tenure.

Beyond them there are a few who have been at the club a while but haven't established themselves. Of course they could do so in 2021. That group includes Tohill, Lynch, Sier, Murphy and probably Wilson. I doubt we'd turn all of them over, in fact I expect more than a few of them will have strong impacts at senior level in 2021, or be strong VFL contributors awaiting an opportunity. I'm quite bullish about our list post the trade/draft period.
