I was wondering this draft night, why they bid on Reef then traded their pick and wondered why we didn't jus trade for their pick in the first place before the Reef bid. Why would the AFL have blocked it?

They blocked it because we didn't have a full quota of later future picks, as we'd already traded out our future 4th. You have to have a full quota in order to trade out your future first. Bloody stupid rule though - not sure why it matters if we do or don't hold pick 75 in next year's draft. Once we'd organised to on-trade one of the GWS picks and get a future pick back with the deal, we were allowed to do the trade.

These players might become successful, these players might not. we won't know until 4-5 years time when we can reflect back on the 2020 draft (similar circumstances to 2014)

Dead set stock standard for the media, we have traded in good possibilities but EVERYONE going through the draft is more or less a pick in hope - yes even the number 1's - and not a few of them - have failed to produce to that level.

This year draft is claimed to be a lottery, these recruits have potential no doubt, but social media is pumping us up that we've nailed the draft, even though we don't know how these blokes will turn out to be.

Nailing a draft is all about getting the players you aimed for and filling the needs that you have, so in the case we have nailed the draft but you are right whether it was a successful draft will be no not known for 4 -5 years.

You have no idea why? After every commentator in the land has said we’ve done v well from the draft, brought in a large batch of top end talent and Hine hardly put a foot wrong with the hand he had? These are people that have been monitoring these boys for the last 3-4 years, so know what we’ve got... even if there is some ‘wait and see’ to find out the full potential of each one of them.
Don’t forget every phantom draft had us getting Reef and one other top 20 player. Which would’ve meant we kept next years first, which is waisted with Nick Daicos a father / son.

I reckon the commentry on drafting is very superficial, almost no analysis. Picking 6 players almost ensured we got a great rating without any consideration of the pros and cons. A kneejerk.

Also I think the comments about us acquiring a batch of top end talent, not made by you alone, adds to the hyperbole. Would be more correct to say we bought in a large batch of medium talent. We all know no one will know how a team does at a draft for seasons down the track. 2020 draft for Collingwoof is going to be massive in deciding where we go as a club as we have invested so heavily.

Also been a high risk pathway and if it pays off Derek Hine will deserve massive accolades. I suspect he didnt have as much wriggle room due to the cap restrictions meaning with shedding a lot of players we were not in a position to bring in any other senior players. Thus he had to go to the draft in a heavy way. Also he has gone to a draft that most other recruiters shied away from. We have pinned a lot of hope to his assessment that this a good crop of kids. We may pick up some real gems with other clubs passing on this draft but if it goes the other way it may really hurt. I cant remember an established club who were currently travelling reasonable well going out on a limb like this re investing in a draft others were not interested in.

Yeah, the bolded has me concerned too. The last time we did something similar to this year is when we traded out Wellingham and Dawes and ended up with picks 18.19 and 20. It turns out it was a really crap draft to be trading into. We get incredibly lucky that Grundy somehow made it to our pick, but picks 19 and 20 were Kennedy and Broomhead and they weren't bad selections becasue there really wasn't much left in the pool by the time we took them.

It’s explained in the article, and GWS didn’t bid because it was blocked. That sentence was poorly worded.

The 2012 draft had a similar number of players taken to 2020, but wasn’t after lists were downsized and junior footy was quashed like in 2020, so I’d take that as some form of endorsement of the 2020 cohort.

Having said that, it goes without saying that there ought to be more variance in drafting this year than on average. Hopefully we’ve gotten our assessments right and we’re advantaged by zigging where the others zagged.

The 1st round picks now have become distorted so counting pick 26 as 1st round becomes pretty pointless. In the first drafts there were only 13 1st round picks so 1st round pretty closely assimilated with the top 10. Slowly we drifted to 18+ picks and now as many as 26.

To me it makes more sense to think top 10, teens, twenties, thirties etc as it gives a better contest of the value of the picks. We got plenty of picks this draft but not top level talent picks, more medium to later talent. The way I think at least that process gives me more context.

It's not an odd way to look at it. When you're in a Melbourne Cup sweep, you feel like you have won when you pull the favourites name out of the hat. That's where we are at - we're feeling good because we like the names we drew from the draft hat, but you don't get the payment when the name comes out of the hat, because it's impossible to win the sweep until the race is run.

3 first rounders albeit in a long first round.

Another way to look at it - 5 of the best 31 rated kids in the country.

Other than the academy / father-son compromise that was this draft, the fact that Vic kids could not play, be seen and most of all develop probably impacted this draft the most. Had they, more may well have been drafted. Our Vic kids could have pushed into the top 10 or slid out further. I think some of them would have pushed up.

Either way, its gonna be an interesting mid season draft with the Vic kids not picked up getting the opportunity to play.

Reminds me a bit of the Cats in 01 - took Bartel, Kelly, Steve J, Ablett and Playfair. Added Mackie and Lonergan the year after.

So WITHOUT making any predictions of how our draftees will turn out, we WON the draft based ONLY on the players we've picked - I don't see any issues with media making such claims.
