That bloody draft took so long my laptop battery died and I missed our 2nd pick.
5hS.gif

I was watching Netflix and checking my phone every now and then, got through a lot of episodes between our picks.

So we have 3 rookie picks yes? But the plan is to only use 2 then keep a spot for the preseason/midseason signings.

I'd like us to grab a ruck.

Corey Gault as a mature age option - https://www.wafl.com.au/player/corey-gault

or one of the young boys:

Max HEATH
Clubs:
Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
Position: Ruck
Size: 203cm/94kg

The Victorian looms as one of the better ruck prospects despite being one of the little known prospects ahead of the draft. Heath had some eye-catching moments over the pre-season, with 2020 set to be a big year for the tall. But unfortunately clubs weren’t able to see as much as they had hoped of the competitive beast. He is willing to tackle hard to win the ball back and is able to be a marking target close to goal. His endurance is a work in progress but he is the perfect player who can develop in an elite program.

HENRY WALSH
Clubs:
Geelong Falcons/Vic Country
Position: Ruck
Size: 203cm/87kg
Walsh is one of the best ruck prospects in the country and could find a home late in the draft. He is the brother of Carlton’s No.1 draft pick Sam, with the tall having completely different traits to the midfielder. He is a good player at ground level and wins a number of clearances with his follow-up work. He was expected to have a huge role at state and NAB League level, but hasn’t been able to show how much he has developed in 12 months.

It's footy forum, if people weren't melting here it would be weird. To me it all a bit meh. It's about as exciting as our draft hand looked. Neither do much for me but Highmore should at least be a safe bet back up KPB who can step in in case of injury. Looks a bit like we have 2 Wilkie's now which wasn't the area I imagined we needed. We probably need a developing tall forward but got a slightly undersized one that might be a wingman but is probably not really going to take a wing spot off others at the club. Hopefully they are better than I imagine they are.
I think Highmore is more of a KPD than Wilkie. He's the same size of Hurley and Grimes.

I agree we probably needed another developing
key forward but going into the draft I'd have prefered we used a later pick. In fact I think I said last week it's the one area I hope we don't use our first on.

Not many clubs already have 4 key forwards already in there 22 and we do and we are already forced to play Battle out of position because there is not enough room for them all forward, so it didn't seem like a huge need to me.

Hopefully he ends up being the next Nick Riewoldt.

I remember reading up on him after someone suggested we had a hard-on for him. He seemed like an interceptor more than a one on one defender. He might be a bit of a better Logan Austin even with big possession numbers for a KPB. He seems pretty safe though so can see why they went for him.

Not the year to be a young developing ruckman with smaller lists. The AFL needs to develop them in an academy and play them on loan to the VFL comp or something or we'll lose a generation of them.

So was this the time to upgrade wilkie. When should that happen
no need to upgrade wilkie He is getting paid properly. He will need to be upgraded at the end of next year.

Wonder if they might also see Allison as a key back.

The good ones come from the minor leagues out the back of Ballarat.

Gotta laugh of the clowns on here carrying on at anyone questioning the picks, especially the ones known for melting like an 8 year old kid.

It's a ******* footy forum, none of us know more than the recruiters but the whole point of the place is to give opinions.

I'm not upset with either of our picks, more surprised.
Exactly. This is a place to discuss and debate differing opinions. It would be extremely boring if we just agreed with the club 100% of the time and didnt all see things differently.

I hope the kid become a very good player. He seems like a great person and was so excited to be talking to Ratts. Hard not to love things like that.

But I was also very surprised by the selection considering some of the highly ranked mids still available. And it is also surprising when the discussion goes from "who the f*ck is that" to "why are you questioning it, we wouldn't pick him if he wasn't a star" instantly off the back of zero new information.

Surprisingly not surprised, I predicted us taking a KPF & a KPB with our first selections, just got the names bloody well wrong.
Goes to show, an ITK I aint.

Two rucks? Would probably take Heath & best available midfielder.

A few random thoughts.

My view is that you need at least three exceptional high class mids, with a whole bunch running through the guts. We have Steele, and possibly Crouch. Hanners is on the downslide, Jones good but not a superstar, Seb the same, then a whole bunch like Gres, Clark, Billings, Hill etc running through the middle.

I am of the belief that to truly be a genuine flag chance we need another top line mid.

So we made it clear through the trading period that one FRDP was a non negotiable as we need to use it this year so we had the option to trade our first next year.
Many think we are gearing up for Bing, but the draft choices last night make me think we are after a mid next trade period. We may still be after Bing and a FA mid, but we may have a top liner in our sights.

A mid range mid in 2020 would only be coming good in 2023, I reckon we are looking at a tilt 2021 onwards. Developing a kid for the mids with this strategy wont cut it for us.
When Clark and Coff were drafted many bemoaned they were only half back flankers. I specifically remember the recruiters saying we wanted them to develop into mids. they were drafted in 2017 and we are looking four years down the track for them to move more into the mids. Highmore is a ready made HBF'er so one can assume that Coff is set for more midfield experience this year. Higgins has also stated he is aiming for the mids as well.

Allison is an interesting one, can't quite get a handle on the rationale for him, initially seems like a Battle type and we have difficulty finding a spot for Josh (whom personally I find easily in our top 22). Really not sure, but he is 18 and has time to develop, I suppose Skunk isn't getting any younger.

Anyway
Crouch
Higgins
Mckernan
Allison
Highmore.

Only lost Hind.

Pretty good all round if we look at our list in Sept 2019 compared to Dec 2020.

Agree with your sentiments and but I don't think anybody called Allison a star of zero information. Conversely nobody should melt and be exasperated because they haven't heard a journo or blogger mention his name in mock drafts. People have zero information to do that as well.

I understand Highmore, a mature 22 y.o who went to the SANFL and played all year and went well. Our last "who the f*ck is that" mature ager from the SANFL has performed remarkably and hasn't missed a beat.

Allison was obviously a long term choice. I can't really see too much of a hole in our forwards and see Battle also as a forward. But he is 18 y.o, was extremely excited when talking to Ratts and I will be nothing but supportive of the kid as I am sure you and all other true Saints fans will be.

We'll know in a couple of years if our recruiters are worth their pay, or whether they should just pick the guy Knightmare says is best.

I would think that in the future, post Ryder, King will become the ruck when Marshall rests.
That will leave a forward line of Battle, King, Membrey,
With exposed form though, we know even less about Allison than we knew about Mayo, who was pretty good forward and on the wing in the VFL.

at a touch under 6ft 4'(1.94m) they are tall enough as key position players - Jack Darling is 1.91m , Charlie Curnrow is 1.92m , Naughton is 1.95m - it all comes down to if they can lead a forward line - Gary Ablett Snr was only 1.85m

Darling is not key position. He is third tall at wce.

Ablett was a freak.

The number of 200+ cm forwards is growing.

Times are a changing....the size that you want your two key defenders to be is more than it was.

Our younger pick up will probably grow more yet. Highmore not.

I dont mind either pick, but I see Highmore more as the intercepting third tall back rather than one of the two key defenders.

Allison is one of the quintessential high-upside talents available in this year’s draft and is one who could well thrive in an elite environment. His most obvious improvement areas are ones which can be easily developed over a few preseasons and alongside high-level established talent, so perhaps clubs with the capacity to take on those prospective kind of players will look at Allison closely

The 'star' comment was more what I saw on Twitter and Facebook where debates were going on between people confused by the choice and then people shutting down the confusing by saying he is exactly like 3 different genuine stars combined and they have no right to question such pick.

The Highmore pick makes a lot of sense considering what we were saying trade week regarding more defensive help. Seemed like he have been into him for a while.

Yep, seems one that is not a known quantity and I’d probably rather that and go for all duck or no dinner than an eventual fringe mid. I think others views above that we’re targeting another mid trade next year sounds right. And we are definitely short on tall forwards as a whole list.

This was always going to be the opportunity and challenge confronting recruiters this draft.

There will undoubtedly be kids who have been taken later that will be the absolute stars of this class down the track... and they'll be top 20 picks who will not produce what their selection number suggests they should.

Allison could well have been one of the taller kids who come on in leaps and bounds during their top age year. We very well may have a top 10 talent taken with a late 20's pick.

He also has the luxury of getting his body ready over a few preseasons under the tutelage of Roughie and getting senior VFL experience under his belt.
